Book excerpt: This research has its ethnographic base in two adjacent villagers in the north-western part of Bangladesh. The villages Dhononjoypara and Gopalhati are examined in order to understand the changing leadership pattern in rural Bangladesh. The traditional leaders in a non-governmental organization is contrasted to the emerging leaders in newly-instituted government agencies. The study reveals a change in the institutions through which leaders can exert power due to government funded programmes and projects, but shows that the basic structure of the leadership remains unchanged. The educated descendants of the traditional leaders are the leaders in the new arena. The crucial importance of young sections of traditionally powerful families and the mechanisms that they have used for institutional change of power is highlighted in the book.

Book excerpt: 73rd Amendment to the Constitution of India has created a legitimate political space from women to establish governance at the grassroots for the purpose of achieving economic development and administering social justice. Occupying the space by the rustic women folk is not an easy task though it is legitimate for them. This work focuses its attention on the process of recruitment of the women to the various panchayat positions. It seeks to analyse the pattern of their emergence. This study captures the bases of power that operates at the micro level. The whole analysis is based on the scientific application of Positional, Reputational and Decision-making approaches and the integration of all the three approaches.

This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the harvest of recent doctoral dissertations on South Asia, principally from North America and Western Europe, but exclusive of theses from universities in South Asia itself. The yield—1305 dissertations based on research carried out during the early and middle nineteen-sixties and brought to completion between 1966 and 1970—is even greater than one would have guessed, eloquent testimony to the expansion of South Asian studies in the West over the last decade. Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia seeks to be a comprehensive compilation of recently completed theses dealing in whole or in part with the former civilizations and the contemporary affairs of Ceylon, India, Nepal and Pakistan. At the same time, this work provides striking testimony of the dynamic growth of Asian Studies outside the subcontinent and particularly in the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France, where most of the major centers of scholarship are presently found. It is an interdisciplinary work covering the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences.

Book excerpt: Analyzing regional challenges and their implications for U.S. foreign policy This book is an impressive overview of security and governance issues in South Asia and their implications for U.S. foreign policy in the region. The focus is on major enduring issues that include India-Pakistan relations, India-China relations, conventional forces, and nuclear weapons. The book's contributors also tackle a number of often underexplored issues, including democratic backsliding in India, authoritarian hardening in China, and the international ramifications of both. The impact of Pakistan's political culture on democracy, and the insurgency in Pakistan's Baluchistan province, along with examinations of the internal security challenges in Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Maldives provide lessons for other states on how to counterviolent extremism and insurgencies related to identity and marginalization. Anyone interested in South Asian security and U.S. policy toward the region will be rewarded with new insights on these topics, written by academics and analysts specializing in the issues. The chapter authors were close colleagues or advisees of long-time Brookings Institution senior fellow Stephen Philip Cohen. Cohen was the first American scholar to work on South Asian security studies. He largely defined the field, trained and mentored many of its leading analysts, and was himself its most experienced and insightful scholar-practitioner until his death in 2019. This book is dedicated to Cohen in recognition of his contributions to scholarship and policymaking on South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book critically examines the role of Social Work in developmental process in the context of Community Development programmes in India. It gives the history of Rural Development in India and with the help of action situations discusses the value of social work intervention in organizing rural poor. An analysis of five Panchayat elections in three villages of Delhi, graphically describes intense struggle for power at the grassroot level. The book makes some practical suggestions to improve the effectiveness of Panchayat in village development work. The main thrust of the book has been on involvement and peoples participation in their own development rather than merely accomplishment of projects or programmes. Review Professor K.D. Gangrade’s book describes the process of decision-making and the tussles that take place in electing panchayat members. Meher C. Nanavatty, in a Foreword to the book, poses an interesting question: Can the social work profession as it exists today “with little roots in the culture of the country and mostly woven around theories from the West†, face the challenge of change?
