It presents a unified solution to such problems in terms of distributed estimation, distributed control, and optimization of interaction topologies and dynamics. Four aspects of the technical solutions in the book are presented: First, the impact of interaction dynamics on the convergence conditions related to interaction topologies is discussed, utilizing a discontinuous cooperative control algorithm of updated design. Second, distributed least-squares and Kalman filtering algorithms for agents with limited interactions are elaborated upon. Third, a general framework of distributed nonlinear control is established, and distributed adaptive control for nonlinear systems with more general uncertainties is presented. Based on the proposed framework, a distributed nonlinear controller is designed to deal with task coordination of robotic systems with nonholonomic constraints. Finally, the problem of optimal multiagent task coordination is addressed and solutions based on approximate dynamic programming and approximate distributed gradient estimation are presented. Swarm intelligence deals with large sets of individuals or agents that are regarded as a self-organizing system showing emergent behaviour. Ideas from biology are often and successfully applied to (optimization) problems in the computer science area. Nature provides several examples of complex architectures that are created by very simple insects with highly limited abilities. These insects live in social colonies and coordinate their actions by a concept called stigmergy. A frequently occurring question when designing multi agent or swarm systems that are (partly) inspired by natural examples is how to coordinate a large group of individuals or instances. This matter is closely connected with the question about the essential characteristics and parameters for both the whole system and each single agent. This thesis deals with these fundamental questions of multi agent and swarm intelligence systems. It presents several approaches for the different problems that might arise during system design. As background for all these approaches, a complex optimization problem has been chosen. The Online Partitioning Problem (OPP) addresses the uniform distribution of a group of agents onto targets under several restrictions, i.e. distance minimization and feature restriction. It is intriguing because it is easy to state but often very difficult to solve. Using such a reference problem allows us to compare the single approaches with each other. Though the presented new approaches deal only with this OPP, most of them can easily be adapted to other problems or are general concepts.

Authors in complexity science have suggested that the discussion of complex systems could benefit from a more systematic approach and a more compact mathematical way to describe the behavior of such systems in addition to the common observations and interpretations taking place today. Regarding quantitative measures to capture emergent phenomena, several approaches have been published, but have not yet been put to wide systematic use in the research community. One reason for this could be the manual effort required to investigate multiagent systems in a quantitatively accurate form. Toward this end, there has so far been a lack of appropriate and easy-to-use IT-based tools. To eliminate this deficiency, we present a software library, which enables researchers to integrate emergence measurements into experiments with multiagent modeling tools such as Repast and NetLogo. The major benefit for researchers is that this toolbox enables them to make comparable, quantitatively well-grounded statements about the emergent behavior of the model at hand. The toolbox therefore provides researchers with a standardized artifact that can be employed in a systematic methodological approach to the analysis of multiagent systems.
