This is the only book written specifically to provide school librarians with emergency preparedness and recovery tools as well as curricular tie-ins. No school is immune to disaster, whether in the form of a natural event like a tornado or a tragedy like the violence that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The key to minimizing injury or death in an emergency is preparedness—something the school librarian is uniquely positioned to lead. This must-have book will show you how to be proactive in getting your school ready for the worst. It provides comprehensive preparedness and recovery plans, check lists, and curricular recommendations on preparedness that can be tailored to your individual library and community. Covering natural disasters, human-made disasters, and school violence, the book shows you how to conduct drills, assess vulnerabilities and risk, communicate preparedness plans, and use bibliotherapy for disaster recovery. It also describes how your library can be a safe haven for students who feel disconnected, bullied, or otherwise disenfranchised. Although the book is primarily intended for school librarians, classroom teachers will also find many ideas here for helping students be better prepared for disasters, whatever their cause or severity.

Book excerpt: This publication was the outcome of a research project undertaken by a team of researchers from Queensland University of Technology and Brisbane Catholic Education Office throughout 1999-2000. The report was originally distributed to a limited number of participants and others considered stakeholders in the fields of education and teacher-librarianship. The publication of the report reflects the interest shown in the project around Australia. The research focused on the impact of new technologies on the day-to-day lives of teacher-librarians, and revealed information that has significant relevance for the training, professional development and infrastructure support for teacher-librarianship. This research is significant as it provides a sound and scholarly approach to the research topic and provides the field and others associated with schooling and teacher-librarianship with documented accounts of the contributions of teacher-librarians, the obstacles they face, and the way technology is affecting their personal and professional lives. Performing Hybridity would be of interest to the teacher-librarianship and general education community. The results of the research are not state or site specific and are applicable to other states in Australia. It is important for administrators and policy makers in state, catholic and independent systems as an information source for staff planning and development, and resourcing. The publication also has value for tertiary institutions offering courses in teacher-librarianship and more general librarianship programs.

Book excerpt: The core of the book revolves around the shifting nature of Ontario’s political landscape. In many ways this is a story of successive governments, ambitious politicians, diligent bureaucrats, and endless library reports straddling the decades. Their aim appears to have been making even better a system that, despite weaknesses, was clearly the best in Canada. Three distinctive trends emerged in Ontario librarianship after the 1930s: first, a growing sense of professionalism in librarianship; second, an enhanced sense of belonging to a pan-Canadian library movement that in 1946 would result in the formation of the Canadian Library Association; and third, a heightened awareness of the competing demands of high culture and popular culture. Public libraries became an important vehicle for promoting community, albeit with competing visions of “space and place,” as Canada generally and Ontario specifically experienced post-World War II immigration and the baby boom. As libraries approached the 21st century, the concerns of digital formats and the all-encompassing Internet intertwined to alter the book-centric "bricks and mortar" world of libraries. Nonetheless, public libraries were well placed to survive this new threat, just as they had with the challenges of radio, television, and telecommunication challenges in the 20th century.
