In Emerald Waters, White Lines, Dalton Blake figures there is only one way he can possibly help his only sister, Beverly, break free from fair-weather friends and a cycle of dependence on drugs. He sets aside the fame and spotlight of his career as a rock star to sail awaya "literallya "on a three-month trip with Bev aboard Freedom Highway, the boat named for his band. Bev has her own motivations for going along. Facing foreclosure and homelessness, she figures this trip will be a great way to con her rich and famous little brother into giving her a loan that she may or may not ever repay. Dalton knows hurricane season is just starting, but he's been sailing for a long time, and he knows how to navigate rough weather. Or so he thinks. Dalton and Bev get more than they ever bargained for from their get well sail. When things get ugly, Dalton is forced to battle three deadly fronts simultaneously in what becomes a flat-out fight against time and circumstance where one of them will not make it back. Come sail the high seas with Dalton, Beverly, and Freedom Highway for the trip of a lifetime in Emerald Waters, White Lines."

Book excerpt: From the author of Iron Coffin, Crash Dive, Tiger Reef and Shark Lake Part aircraft carrier. Part submarine. All weapon. And it’s aimed at the U.S . . . . The U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams—UDTs—are the best of the best. Island after island, throughout the Pacific Theater, their job has been to recon enemy positions, pinpoint the location of machine-gun nests, and clear the beaches of mines and other obstacles for the Allied forces. With the invasion of the Philippines under way and the end of the war in sight, the empire of the Rising Sun prepares to launch the Sen-Toku class submarines. Designed to carry kamikaze fighter planes and manned Kaiten torpedoes, one enormous Sen-Toku sub is a fleet in itself—making it more than capable of invading the East Coast of the U.S. and striking Washington, D.C. Now, with a ragtag group of Allied soldiers and guerrillas, UDT officer Lieutenant Charlton Randall has to infiltrate an enemy stronghold, avoid detection, and destroy the Sen-Toku in a mission from which no one may make it out alive . . . . “John Mannock delivers heart-stopping action.” —Joe Buff, Author of Straits of Power

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1888, O Ateneu is a classic of Brazilian literature. It stands as one of the best examples of the Realist/Naturalist mode of fiction flourishing at the time (following the lead of French literature), but the novel’s first-person narration and satirical edge make it a more complex work. These features also distinguish it from the then-popular “school” novel. As the narrator recounts his humiliating experiences as a student, it becomes clear that his school is structured and administered so as to reproduce the class divisions and power structure of the larger society. At the same time, Pompéia maintains the novel’s credibility as a bildungsroman by portraying the narrator’s psychological development. The novel’s conclusion at once suggests both a doomed society and its possible redemption, indicative of a moment of upheaval and transition in Brazilian history.
