Book Synopsis Building Capabilities for Productive Development by : Jorge Cornick
Download or read book Building Capabilities for Productive Development written by Jorge Cornick and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productive development policies (PDPs) are notoriously hard. They involve a daunting level of technical detail, require public-private collaboration, are in constant danger of capture, and demand time consistency hard to achieve in a politically volatile region. Nevertheless, the potential of PDPs to revitalize the regionâs economic performance and spur productivity growth cannot be ignored. This book takes an in-depth look at 17 cases involving productive development agencies from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica and Uruguay, identifying key features of institutional design and agency-level practices that make success more likely in this difficult policy arena. Careful study of these experiences might help successful productive development policies gain currency across the region. The cases in this book should not be seen as the exceptions that prove the rule of lackluster PDP performance, but rather as examples that demonstrate the rule can be broken.

Download or read book Latin American Viticulture Adaptation to Climate Change written by Gastón Gutiérrez Gamboa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: Latin American viticulture faces a wide range of difficulties that include social, political, economic, and productive aspects. Soil diversity, together with the climates in which the viticulture activity takes place, favours the production of grapes, juices, raisins, musts, wines, and distillates with unique and distinctive characters for the world. In addition, the great genetic diversity that covers autochthonous and minor grapevine varieties, including unknown genotypes, opens a wide range of research opportunities for the adaptation of the viticulture to the negative effects of global warming, favouring sustainability and social equity. This book compiles the research about the new viticultural trends performed in diverse regions from Latin America such as Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Uruguay, covering different topics in viticulture of global importance. This book addresses the impacts of soil and climatic conditions and viticultural practices on vine physiology, berry quality and wine typicity, including topics related to social sciences and agricultural economics. This will allow to provide a relevant discussion for future guidelines in viticulture under a territorial development perspective

Download or read book Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management written by Saeid Eslamian and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing population growth has caused a proportional increased demand for water, and existing water sources are depleting day by day. Moreover, with the impact of climate change, the rates of rainfall in many regions have experienced a higher degree of variability. In many cities, government utilities have been struggling to maintain sufficient water for the residents and other users. The Handbook of Irrigation Hydrology and Management examines and analyzes irrigated ecosystems in which water storage, applications, or drainage volumes are artificially controlled in the landscape and the spatial domain of processes varies from micrometers to tens of kilometers, while the temporal domain spans from seconds to centuries. The continuum science of irrigation hydrology includes the surface, subsurface (unsaturated and groundwater systems), atmospheric, and plant subsystems. Further, the book includes coverage of environmental and economic impacts, water quality issues, water harvesting, satellite measurements for irrigation, and more. Features: Offers water-saving strategies to increase the judicious use of scarce water resources Presents strategies to maximize agricultural yield per unit of water used for different regions Compares irrigation methods to offset changing weather patterns and impacts of climate change

Book Synopsis Beyond the Carbon Economy by : Don Zillman
Download or read book Beyond the Carbon Economy written by Don Zillman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present energy economy, with its heavy dependence on fossil fuels, is not sustainable over the medium to long term for many interconnected reasons. Climate change is now recognized as posing a serious threat. Energy and resource decisions involving the carbon fuels therefore play a large role in this threat. Fossil fuel reserves may also be running short and many of the major reserves are in politically unstable parts of the world. Yet citizens in nations with rapidly developing economies aspire to the benefits of the modern energy economy. China and India alone have 2.4 billion potential customers for cars, industries, and electrical services. Even so, more than half of the world's citizens still lack access to energy. Decisions involving fossil fuels are therefore a significant part of the development equation. This volume explains how the law can impede or advance the shift to a world energy picture significantly different from that which exists today. It first examines the factors that create the problems of the present carbon economy, including environmental concerns and development goals. It then provides international and regional legal perspectives, examining public international law, regional legal structures, the responses of international legal bodies, and the role of major international nongovernmental actors. The book then moves on to explore sectoral perspectives including the variety of renewable energy sources, new carbon fuels, nuclear power, demand controls, and energy efficiency. Finally, the authors examine how particular States are, could, or should, be adapting legally to the challenges of moving beyond the carbon economy.

Book Synopsis Plant-Parasitic Nematodes of Coffee by : Ricardo M. Souza
Download or read book Plant-Parasitic Nematodes of Coffee written by Ricardo M. Souza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I conceived this book, what I had in mind was what I did not know about coffee-parasitic nematodes (CPNs). Indeed, after reading many papers and several chapters in books, I felt far from having a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Not only would it be a daunting task to retrieve the numerous articles, reports, theses and dissertations on CPNs published since 1878, but it would also be impossible to learn, on my own, from all the enormous experience acquired by nematologists and coffee growers in so many countries. Therefore, this book is dedicated to those with restless minds, who want to know more about CPNs and their importance in coffee production worldwide. This book has been diligently written by top scientists in their areas of expertise or country, and it has been meticulously edited to guarantee precision without compromising an enjoyable read. I learned a lot from this book...I’m sure you will too. Finally, I’d like to thank Zuzana Bernhart from Springer, who believed in this project and decided to publish it; Susan Casement, who revised all chapters for grammatical correctness; and all the contributors, without whom this book would never have became a reality. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a detailed economic assessment of the magnitude and sources of the economic benefits to Brazil since the early 1980s from varietal improvements in upland rice, edible beans, and soybeans. The authors pay particular attention to isolating the benefits from genetic improvement, which they distinguish from other factors that change grain yield or quality. They use detailed information on the genetic and breeding histories of each crop and the institutional arrangements for crop-improvement research in Brazil to estimate the benefits attributable to the research done by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and by other Brazilian agencies. They capture international spill-in effects as well. The authors also provide more general insight into the importance of addressing attribution questions in evaluating public research investments, develop some methods for doing so, and illustrate how to apply them.
