Download or read book Life Under the Baobab Tree written by Kenneth N. Ngwa and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Under the Baobab Tree: Africana Studies and Religion in a Transitional Age is a compendium of innovating essays meticulously written by early and later diaspora people of African descent. Their speech arises from the depth of their experiences under the Baobab tree and offers to the world voices of resilience, newness/resurrection, hope, and life. Resolutely journeying on the trails of their ancestors, they speak about setbacks and forward-looking movements of liberation, social transformation, and community formation. The volume is a carefully woven conversation of intellectual substance and structure across time, space, and spirituality that is quintessentially “Africana” in its centering of methodological, theoretical, epistemological, and hermeneutical complexity that assumes nonlinear and dialogical approaches to developing liberating epistemologies in the face of imperialism, colonialism, racism, and religious intolerance. A critical part of this conversation is a reconceptualization and reconfiguration of the concept of religion in its colonial and imperial forms. Life Under the Baobab Tree examines how Africana peoples understand their corporate experiences of the divine not as “religion” apart from its intimate connections to social realities of communal health, economics, culture, politics, environment, violence, war, and dynamic community belonging. To that end Afro-Pessimistic formulations of life placed in dialogic relation Afro-Optimism. Both realities constitute life under the Baobab tree and represent the sturdiness and variation that anchors the deep ruptures that have affected Africana life and the creative responses. The metaphor and substance of the tree resists reductionist, essentialist, and assured conclusions about the nature of diasporic lived experiences, both within the continent of Africa and in the African Diaspora.

Book Synopsis African Traditions in the Study of Religion, Diaspora and Gendered Societies by : Ezra Chitando
Download or read book African Traditions in the Study of Religion, Diaspora and Gendered Societies written by Ezra Chitando and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historiography of African religions and religions in Africa presents a remarkable shift from the study of 'Africa as Object' to 'Africa as Subject', thus translating the subject from obscurity into the global community of the academic study of religion. This book presents a unique multidisciplinary exploration of African Traditions in the Study of Religion, Diaspora, and Gendered Societies. The book is structured under two main sections. The first provides insights into the interface between Religion and Society. The second features African Diaspora together with Youth and Gender which have not yet featured prominently in studies on religion in Africa. Contributors drawn from diverse African and global contexts situate current scholarly traditions of the study of African religions within the purview of academic encounter and exchanges with non-African scholars and non-African contexts. African scholars enrich the study of religions from their respective academic and methodological orientations. Jacob Kehinde Olupona stands out as a pioneer in the socio-scientific interpretation of African indigenous religion and religions in Africa and the new African Diaspora. This book honours his immense contribution to an emerging field of study and research.
Book Synopsis Poverty in the Book of Proverbs by : Lechion Peter Kimilike
Download or read book Poverty in the Book of Proverbs written by Lechion Peter Kimilike and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western interpretations of poverty proverbs in the Old Testament Book of Proverbs have tended to see a status quo acceptance in the ancient texts, thus neglecting existential challenges of the poverty issue. In contrast, Lechion Peter Kimilike argues that African proverbial material on poverty may - when used comparatively to interpret the corresponding Old Testament poverty proverbs - create a more dynamic analysis. The author's new and thought-provoking interpretation suggests «an African transformational hermeneutic» that balances between the questions and methodology of the «global [i.e., western] guild» and the concerns of the African interpretative context.

Book Synopsis Conversations with memorable personalities by : Amos Malupenga
Download or read book Conversations with memorable personalities written by Amos Malupenga and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reviewing just part of this book's contents, Rex Mudenda - a risk-management professional and Lusaka based avid reader of political science literature - states This book is loaded. There is usually no such a cocktail of prominent personalities covered in one book. I kept on salivating on the featured names under the "Conversations" section. The book has captured a good slice of Zambia's political story. Mulenga Kapwepwe, a prolific Zambian author, states: A page turning thriller of historical, social and political value. Each prominent personality comes alive through Amos Malupenga's compelling narrative, allowing us rare glimpses into their personal experiences and connections to pivotal events that have impacted and coloured our fascinating national story. The above is an apt description of this book's contents. They are as intriguing as they are gripping. Because of the "cocktail" of the personalities featured, one can safely say "these are several books in one." On the basis of these conversations with most of the political figures, the author has taken the liberty to draw a parallel between democracy and theocracy. In so doing, the author concludes that from the beginning of human history, even the best human governments (democracies) have failed to solve mankind's serious problems because of bad leadership owing to the inherent imperfection as a result of sin. The bad leadership "is increasingly proving to be one of the root causes of all evil in human societies" across the entire inhabited earth. Consequently, the author asserts that theocracy is the panacea, the universal cure, the perfect solution and sovereign remedy to mankind's problems - be they big or small.

Book excerpt: The baobab tree story, which I wrote (the church version) is actually based upon a true story, told by Limakatso Nare, a Lutheran pastor who is currently serving a congregation in Louisiana. When he was growing up in his native Africa, he gathered for Sunday school under the baobab tree. Here he learned the Biblical stories of Noah and the ark, Jonah and the big fish, and the parables of Jesus. His Sunday school experiences inspired my story, Under the Baobab Tree.
Book Synopsis Women and Leadership (Revised Edition): by : Nelson Hayashida
Download or read book Women and Leadership (Revised Edition): written by Nelson Hayashida and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace, Tolerance, & Forgiveness The fact that African women cooperated to have a male American missionary document their stories speaks volumes of the capacity for grace, tolerance, and forgiveness on their part. It also speaks to the regard that they had for the Hayashidas. Nelson Hayashida has demonstrated how skilled people can facilitate the liberation process for others. This book exposes the gap between carefully crafted statements affirming women and the reality of reluctant submission to women in leadership. We hear the voices of women themselves. This book is academically sound and characterized by excellence based on sound methodology. The questions raised, the voices heard, and the potential corrective measures are a vital contribution to an important conversation within the church community. While this book is mainly focused on the Baptist church in South Africa, it presents many possibilities for stimulating debates and policy and experiential changes in other faith communities. —DESMOND HOFFMEISTER Executive Director, Global Prophetic Network American Baptist Seminary of the West
Book Synopsis Unraveling and Reweaving Sacred Canon in Africana Womanhood by : Rosetta E. Ross
Download or read book Unraveling and Reweaving Sacred Canon in Africana Womanhood written by Rosetta E. Ross and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection, continental and diasporan African women interrogate the concept “sacred text” and analyze ways oral and written religious “texts” intersect with violence against African-descended women and girls. While the sanctioned idea of a sacred text is written literature, this project interrupts that conception by drawing attention to speech and other embodied practices that have sacral authority within the social imaginary. As a volume focused on religion and violence, essays in this collection analyze religions’ authorization of violence against women and girls; contest the legitimacy of some religious “texts”; and affirm other writing, especially memoir, as redemptive. Unraveling and Reweaving Sacred Canon in Africana Womanhood arises from three years of conversation of continental and diasporan women, most recently continued in the July 6-10, 2014 Consultation of African and African Disaporan Women in Religion and Theology and privileges experiences and contexts of continental and diasporan African women and girls. Interlocutors include African traditionalists, Christian Protestants and Catholics, Muslims, and women embodying hybrid practices of these and other traditions.
Book Synopsis Feminist New Testament Studies by : K. Wicker
Download or read book Feminist New Testament Studies written by K. Wicker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an engaging and provocative introduction to Feminist Biblical Studies. The authors draw upon their own social, cultural and religious backgrounds and experiences in reading the New Testament as feminists in the context of globalization. They provide intentional interpretations of biblical texts that cast gender, race, class and power relationships as issues inherent in both the content and context of scripture and its interpretation. The essays call into question feminist social engagement that does not extend beyond academic halls, churches and Christians, suggesting directions for future research and teaching in Feminist Biblical Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of the African Baobab Tree is a story of a beautiful tree who complained to the great spirit of the wild plains about wanting to be the best and brightest and most handsome of all the African trees. The great spirit became tired of the complaints, and reached down from the sky, yanked the tree out of the ground, and placed it back in upside down! All the animals were alarmed, and so was the huge tree. For after that, the magnificent tree only grew leaves once a year. The other months, the roots seem to bend and grow towards the sky.
