Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Fields medal winning work of Michael Freedman, this book explores the disc embedding theorem for 4-dimensional manifolds. This theorem underpins virtually all our understanding of topological 4-manifolds. Most famously, this includes the 4-dimensional Poincaré conjecture in the topological category. The Disc Embedding Theorem contains the first thorough and approachable exposition of Freedman's proof of the disc embedding theorem, with many new details. A self-contained account of decomposition space theory, a beautiful but outmoded branch of topology that produces non-differentiable homeomorphisms between manifolds, is provided, as well as a stand-alone interlude that explains the disc embedding theorem's key role in all known homeomorphism classifications of 4-manifolds via surgery theory and the s-cobordism theorem. Additionally, the ramifications of the disc embedding theorem within the study of topological 4-manifolds, for example Frank Quinn's development of fundamental tools like transversality are broadly described. The book is written for mathematicians, within the subfield of topology, specifically interested in the study of 4-dimensional spaces, and includes numerous professionally rendered figures.

Book Synopsis Linear Algebra Done Right by : Sheldon Axler
Download or read book Linear Algebra Done Right written by Sheldon Axler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-07-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text for a second course in linear algebra, aimed at math majors and graduates, adopts a novel approach by banishing determinants to the end of the book and focusing on understanding the structure of linear operators on vector spaces. The author has taken unusual care to motivate concepts and to simplify proofs. For example, the book presents - without having defined determinants - a clean proof that every linear operator on a finite-dimensional complex vector space has an eigenvalue. The book starts by discussing vector spaces, linear independence, span, basics, and dimension. Students are introduced to inner-product spaces in the first half of the book and shortly thereafter to the finite- dimensional spectral theorem. A variety of interesting exercises in each chapter helps students understand and manipulate the objects of linear algebra. This second edition features new chapters on diagonal matrices, on linear functionals and adjoints, and on the spectral theorem; some sections, such as those on self-adjoint and normal operators, have been entirely rewritten; and hundreds of minor improvements have been made throughout the text.
Book Synopsis Algebraic Structures in Automata and Databases Theory by : Boris Isaakovich Plotkin
Download or read book Algebraic Structures in Automata and Databases Theory written by Boris Isaakovich Plotkin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the investigation of algebraic structure. The emphasis is on the algebraic nature of real automation, which appears as a natural three-sorted algebraic structure, that allows for a rich algebraic theory. Based on a general category position, fuzzy and stochastic automata are defined. The final chapter is devoted to a database automata model. Database is defined as an algebraic structure and this allows us to consider theoretical problems of databases.
Book Synopsis Embeddings in Manifolds by : Robert J. Daverman
Download or read book Embeddings in Manifolds written by Robert J. Daverman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A topological embedding is a homeomorphism of one space onto a subspace of another. The book analyzes how and when objects like polyhedra or manifolds embed in a given higher-dimensional manifold. The main problem is to determine when two topological embeddings of the same object are equivalent in the sense of differing only by a homeomorphism of the ambient manifold. Knot theory is the special case of spheres smoothly embedded in spheres; in this book, much more general spaces and much more general embeddings are considered. A key aspect of the main problem is taming: when is a topological embedding of a polyhedron equivalent to a piecewise linear embedding? A central theme of the book is the fundamental role played by local homotopy properties of the complement in answering this taming question. The book begins with a fresh description of the various classic examples of wild embeddings (i.e., embeddings inequivalent to piecewise linear embeddings). Engulfing, the fundamental tool of the subject, is developed next. After that, the study of embeddings is organized by codimension (the difference between the ambient dimension and the dimension of the embedded space). In all codimensions greater than two, topological embeddings of compacta are approximated by nicer embeddings, nice embeddings of polyhedra are tamed, topological embeddings of polyhedra are approximated by piecewise linear embeddings, and piecewise linear embeddings are locally unknotted. Complete details of the codimension-three proofs, including the requisite piecewise linear tools, are provided. The treatment of codimension-two embeddings includes a self-contained, elementary exposition of the algebraic invariants needed to construct counterexamples to the approximation and existence of embeddings. The treatment of codimension-one embeddings includes the locally flat approximation theorem for manifolds as well as the characterization of local flatness in terms of local homotopy properties.
Book Synopsis Dimensions, Embeddings, and Attractors by : James C. Robinson
Download or read book Dimensions, Embeddings, and Attractors written by James C. Robinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible research monograph investigates how 'finite-dimensional' sets can be embedded into finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. The first part brings together a number of abstract embedding results, and provides a unified treatment of four definitions of dimension that arise in disparate fields: Lebesgue covering dimension (from classical 'dimension theory'), Hausdorff dimension (from geometric measure theory), upper box-counting dimension (from dynamical systems), and Assouad dimension (from the theory of metric spaces). These abstract embedding results are applied in the second part of the book to the finite-dimensional global attractors that arise in certain infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, deducing practical consequences from the existence of such attractors: a version of the Takens time-delay embedding theorem valid in spatially extended systems, and a result on parametrisation by point values. This book will appeal to all researchers with an interest in dimension theory, particularly those working in dynamical systems.

Book Synopsis Point-set Topology With Topics: Basic General Topology For Graduate Studies by : Robert Andre
Download or read book Point-set Topology With Topics: Basic General Topology For Graduate Studies written by Robert Andre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook can be used as introduction to a general topology course at undergraduate and graduate level courses. However, many parts of this book present topological concepts that apply directly to functional analysis, which will be of interest to scholars working in those fields. In Part I, readers are eased into the main subject matter of general topology, being presented with summaries of normed vector spaces and metric spaces. Parts II to VI form the core material contained in most Basic General Topology courses. After having worked through the most fundamental concepts of topology, the reader will be exposed to brief introductions to more specialized or advanced topics of pointset topology. These are presented in Part VII in the form of a sequence of chapters, many of which can be read or studied independently or in short sequences of two or three chapters, provided that the student has mastered the previous sections.Chapters related to the more basic ideas of general topology are followed by a collection of 'concept review' questions, the answers to which are found in the main body of the text. These questions highlight the main concepts presented in that chapter, as well as ideas that are often overlooked when first encountered, which will help to test the students' understanding. The efforts required in answering correctly such questions will provide the student with the ability to solve more complex problems in the exercises collected at the end of each section.
