Book excerpt: The problem of point-to-point radio communication on the moon is discussed, and equations and curves are presented to estimate power requirements in lunar communication systems.Assuming a smooth surface, consideration is given to ground wave attenuation over both layered and non-layered grounds, antenna ground losses in situations where ground screens are impractical, noise level estimates in the receiving system, and the effects on propagation of possible lunar ionospheres. An example of the calculation of required power for a particular communication system is given, and further studies are suggested. Book excerpt: The report presents a self-contained exposition of ground wave propagation over a smooth inhomogeneous earth model. A factorization procedure is used to obtain an exact solution for a two-dimensional cylindrical model which may have any number of homogeneous sections. It is demonstrated that under most conditions in practice, the solution for the mode conversion coefficients can be simplified to a form which was derived earlier by an application of the compensation theorem. Formulas are given which permit the refinement of earlier approximate calculations if such accuracy is required in future engineering developments such as precise navigation systems. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrestrial Propagation of Long Electromagnetic Waves deals with the propagation of long electromagnetic waves confined principally to the shell between the earth and the ionosphere, known as the terrestrial waveguide. The discussion is limited to steady-state solutions in a waveguide that is uniform in the direction of propagation. Wave propagation is characterized almost exclusively by mode theory. The mathematics are developed only for sources at the ground surface or within the waveguide, including artificial sources as well as lightning discharges. This volume is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of wave propagation in a planar and curved isotropic waveguide. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the effects of an anisotropic ionosphere. The basic equations are summarized and plane-wave reflection from a dielectric interface is considered, along with the superposition of two obliquely incident plane waves. The properties of waveguide boundaries are implicitly represented by Fresnel reflection coefficients. Subsequent chapters focus on boundaries of the terrestrial guide; lightning discharges as a natural source of extremely-low-frequency and very-low-frequency radiation; and the mode theory for waves in an isotropic spherical shell. This book will be a useful resource for students and practitioners of physics.

Book excerpt: Long-range, over-the-horizon (transhorizon) radio wave propagation is considered for the case of the Moon. In the event that relay satellites are not available or otherwise unwarranted for use, transhorizon communication provides for a contingency or backup option for non line-of-sight lunar surface exploration scenarios. Two potential low-frequency propagation mechanisms characteristic of the lunar landscape are the lunar regolith and the photoelectron induced plasma exosphere enveloping the Moon. Although it was hoped that the regolith would provide for a spherical waveguide which could support a trapped surface wave phenomena, it is found that, in most cases, the regolith is deleterious to long range radio wave propagation. However, the presence of the plasma of the lunar exosphere supports wave propagation and, in fact, surpasses the attenuation of the regolith. Given the models of the regolith and exosphere adopted here, it is recommended that a frequency of 1 MHz be considered for low rate data transmission along the lunar surface. It is also recommended that further research be done to capture the descriptive physics of the regolith and the exospheric plasma so that a more complete model can be obtained. This comprehensive theoretical study is based entirely on first principles and the mathematical techniques needed are developed as required; it is self-contained and should not require the use of outside resources for its understanding. Previous studies have dealt extensively with abrupt changes in surface properties (modeled in terms of surface impedance), or abrupt changes in height as represented by precipitous hills or valleys, on the convexly curved earth's surface. When the terrain changes gradually, as in the presence of smooth hills or depressions, it is necessary to consider the effects of variable concave surface curvature, and more generally those of a gradual change over from concave to convex, on the signal propagation characteristics. Of special interest are the fields observed on or near the surface when the source is also situated on or near the surface. This paper is concerned with a review of earlier work on the concave surface problem, and with a summary of our current effort to adapt and extend these results to ground wave propagation. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ground wave propagation in the presence of intense atmospheric ionization, such as may occur as a result of ionizing radiation from nuclear events, is studies. The influence of an enhanced dielectric constant for the atmosphere is also considered. It is concluded that extremely high ionization sources are necessary to produce sufficient ions to completely attenuate the ground wave because of the high ion-neutral collision frequency at the ground level. The analysis method is immediately applicable to the study of ground wave propagation in the ionized atmosphere of a planet of other celestial body, since this requires only the trivial but numerically significant modification of the radius of curvature of the ground. A computer program is presented which can calculate the ground wave in both the normal and the ionized atmosphere. The altitude above ground of either transmitter or receiver or both transmitter and receiver can be taken into account.

Book excerpt: For probable values of the lunar electromagnetic properties, a transverse magnetic surface wave may be propagated along the solar wind plasma-moon interface in the frequency range from about one kilohertz to about ten kilohertz. The horizontal propagation characteristics of this surface wave as a function of frequency may be used to probe the lunar electromagnetic properties to a probable maximum depth of about fifty kilometers. The electromagnetic fields of idealized dipole sources located within a few meters of the lunar surface and immersed in the solar wind plasma are considered. For a vertical electric dipole, or broadside to a horizontal magnetic dipole, the surface fields at radial distances greater than about ten kilometers are found to be dominated by the surface wave. These sources may also excite transverse magnetic wave guide modes confined between the plasma and a lunar conducting basement. If a wet model of the moon is adopted, only the surface wave mode will be present, and it will be sensitive to the depth of the ice to water transition, expected at about one kilometer, and to lunar dielectric properties between the transition depth and the surface. If the moon is dry, a thermally activated conductive basement is expected at about one hundred kilometers, and the surface wave will be sensitive to dielectric properties to a probable maximum depth of about fifty kilometers. For the dry model, the fields due to the wave guide modes become important below about two kilohertz for the horizontal magnetic dipole source.
