Book excerpt: For fans of Small Spaces, Coraline, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and James Howe's Bunnicula classics comes the first book in the award-winning, New York Times bestselling Books of Elsewhere series. This house is keeping secrets . . . When eleven-year-old Olive and her parents move into the crumbling mansion on Linden Street and find it filled with mysterious paintings, Olive knows the place is creepy—but it isn’t until she encounters its three talking cats that she realizes there’s something darkly magical afoot. Then Olive finds a pair of antique spectacles in a dusty drawer and discovers the most peculiar thing yet: She can travel inside the house’s spooky paintings to a world that’s strangely quiet . . . and eerily sinister. But in entering Elsewhere, Olive has been ensnared in a mystery darker and more dangerous than she could have imagined, confronting a power that wants to be rid of her by any means necessary. With only the cats and an unusual boy she meets in Elsewhere on her side, it’s up to Olive to save the house from the shadows, before the lights go out for good.

Book excerpt: In Olive's third adventure in the New York Times bestselling Books of Elsewhere series, what lurks below the house could be as dangerous as what's hidden inside . . . Some terrifying things have happened to Olive in the old stone house, but none as scary as starting junior high. Or so she thinks. When she plummets through a hole in her backyard, though, Olive realizes two things that may change her mind: First, the wicked Annabelle McMartin is back. Second, there's a secret below-ground that unlocks not one but two of Elsewhere's biggest, most powerful, most dangerous forces yet. But with the house's magical cats acting suspicious, her best friend threatening to move away, and her ally Morton starting to rebel, Olive isn't sure where to turn. Will she figure the mystery out in time? Or will she be lured into Elsewhere . . . and trapped there for good? A must-read fantasy series for fans of Pseudonymous Bosch, Coraline, Small Spaces, and James Howe's Bunnicula classics.

Book excerpt: We first met Avery in two of the stories featured in Dana Johnson's award–winning collection Break Any Woman Down. As a young girl, she and her family escape the violent streets of Los Angeles to a more gentrified existence in suburban West Covina. This average life, filled with school, trips to 7–Eleven to gawk at Tiger Beat magazine, and family outings to Dodger Stadium, is soon interrupted by a past she cannot escape, personified in the guise of her violent cousin Keith. When Keith moves in with her family, he triggers a series of events that will follow Avery throughout her life: to her studies at USC, to her burgeoning career as a painter and artist, and into her relationship with a wealthy Italian who sequesters her in his glass–walled house in the Hollywood Hills. The past will intrude upon Avery's first gallery show, proving her mother's adage: Every goodbye aint gone. The dual–narrative of Elsewhere, California illustrates the complicated history of African Americans across the rolling basin of Los Angeles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As important cultural icons of the early nineteenth-century United States, adventurers energized the mythologies of the West and contributed to the justifications of territorial conquest. They told stories of exhilarating perils, boundless landscapes, and erotic encounters that elevated their chauvinism, avarice, and violence into forms of nobility. As self-proclaimed avatars of American exceptionalism, Jimmy L. Bryan Jr. suggests in The American Elsewhere, adventurers transformed westward expansion into a project of romantic nationalism. A study of US expansionism from 1815–1848, The American Elsewhere delves into the “adventurelogues” of the era to reveal the emotional world of men who sought escape from the anonymity of the urban East and pressures of the Market Revolution. As volunteers, trappers, traders, or curiosity seekers, they stepped into “elsewheres,” distant and dangerous. With their words and art, they entered these unfamiliar realms that had fostered caution and apprehension, and they reimagined them as regions that awakened romantic and reckless optimism. In doing so, Bryan shows, adventurers created the figure of the remarkable American male that generated a wide appeal and encouraged a personal investment in nationhood among their audiences. Bryan provides a thorough reading of a wide variety of sources—including correspondence, travel accounts, fiction, poetry, artwork, and material culture—and finds that adventurers told stories and shaped images that beguiled a generation of Americans into believing in their own exceptionality and in their destiny to conquer the continent.

Book excerpt: Gabriel-Albert Aurier, though primarily remembered nowadays as an art critic, especially as a vociferous early advocate of the work of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, was also an ardent and very active member of the Symbolist Movement during the years immediately prior to his premature death from typhus. Along with a number of short stories, the present volume contains his posthumously published novella Elsewhere, an important work of modernist prose fiction, determinedly original in its narrative method, casually self-referential while deliberately avoiding explanation of the peculiar symbolism of its violent climax. With its caustic admixture of the earnest and the satirical in its defiant championship of the poetic in opposition to the assaults of positivistic science, it is a significant precursor of surrealism; and, although it has affinities, unsurprisingly, with other near-contemporary radical Symbolist texts, it is very much one of a kind, and has lost none of its trenchancy with the passage of time.

Book excerpt: Joseph Klinger has problems in returning to start his fifth-grade school year at St. Cleo's Grammar School. It is difficult for Joe to forgive the kids that attacked him just a few months before. Joe looks to his relationship with God to find the strength to be able to function as a student even though he would be learning with the kids that attacked him. The courts ordered all students to participate in the American Standardized Testing Program. Government officials wanted to examine just how well the students of St. Cleo's Grammar School were learning and how they were grasping what they were supposed to be learning at their grade levels. They also wanted to investigate the possibility of grade-curving on exams and falsifying grades on report cards if such violations were happening. The students' scores on the AST assessments over the first three years of testing were disappointing. The principal of the school, Griffin Odell, repeatedly promised that he would work to solve the school's problems and to reform its students. The Mayor of Effitsville, Mitchell Osborne, argued that the City of Effitsville could not support the financial burden of supporting another public middle school. The mayor wanted everyone to punish Joseph for being who Mitchell considered to be a whistleblower. The Effitsville Family Planning Center was going to begin to give family-planning training to sixth-grade, seventh-grade, and eighth-grade students that were entering puberty and young adulthood. The authorities came to understand that some students in this school were dating and were experimenting with intimacy. The government made family-planning training mandatory for all young adults in this school. The Effitsville Behavioral Health Center helped Joseph to function with psychotherapy and psychiatric treatment. Ellen Hayes was a mentor for Joseph and for his best friend, Clarence Fulbright. She tries very hard to explain the reality of the dangers of under-aged dating and an under aged pregnancy to Joseph and Clarence. She was also a part-time counselor at St. Cleo's Grammar School. Elsewhere Volume 2 offers unpublished theoretical religious discussions about God's role in our daily lives. The faculty of the school tries to modernize their student's religious training to help them to find God in their daily lives. The Government finally makes the decision that is best for the present and future students of the City of Effitsville. This story was inspired by true events concerning a parochial grammar school closure in the mid-1980's.
