Download or read book Cruel Modernity written by Jean Franco and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cruel Modernity, Jean Franco examines the conditions under which extreme cruelty became the instrument of armies, governments, rebels, and rogue groups in Latin America. She seeks to understand how extreme cruelty came to be practiced in many parts of the continent over the last eighty years and how its causes differ from the conditions that brought about the Holocaust, which is generally the atrocity against which the horror of others is measured. In Latin America, torturers and the perpetrators of atrocity were not only trained in cruelty but often provided their own rationales for engaging in it. When "draining the sea" to eliminate the support for rebel groups gave license to eliminate entire families, the rape, torture, and slaughter of women dramatized festering misogyny and long-standing racial discrimination accounted for high death tolls in Peru and Guatemala. In the drug wars, cruelty has become routine as tortured bodies serve as messages directed to rival gangs. Franco draws on human-rights documents, memoirs, testimonials, novels, and films, as well as photographs and art works, to explore not only cruel acts but the discriminatory thinking that made them possible, their long-term effects, the precariousness of memory, and the pathos of survival.

Book Synopsis Saints and Sanctity in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam by : Alexandre Coello de la Rosa
Download or read book Saints and Sanctity in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam written by Alexandre Coello de la Rosa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common objective of saint veneration in all three Abrahamic religions is the recovery and perpetuation of the collective memory of the saint. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all yield intriguing similarities and differences in their respective conceptions of sanctity. This edited collection explores the various literary and cultural productions associated with the cult of saints and pious figures, as well as the socio-historical contexts in which sainthood operates, in order to better understand the role of saints in monotheistic religions. Using comparative religious and anthropological approaches, an international panel of contributors guides the reader through three main concerns. They describe and illuminate the ways in which sanctity is often configured. In addition, the diverse cultural manifestations of the cult of the saints are examined and analysed. Finally, the various religious, social, and political functions that saints came to play in numerous societies are compared and contrasted. This ambitious study covers sanctity from the Middle Ages until the contemporary period, and has a geographical scope that includes Europe, Central Asia, North Africa, the Americas, and the Asian Pacific. As such, it will be of use to scholars of the history of religions, religious pluralism, and interreligious dialogue, as well as students of sainthood and hagiography.
Download or read book ¿Por qué vivimos? written by Marc Augé and published by Gedisa Editorial S A. This book was released on 2004 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Pensar distinto: Antropología en diez palabras by : Marco Aime
Download or read book Pensar distinto: Antropología en diez palabras written by Marco Aime and published by Alianza Editorial. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
