Book excerpt: In his English grandmother's apartment in Berlin's "Old West" the writer heard Neville Chamberlain's voice coming through the radio, telling the world," Peace in Our Time." Walking with his cousin York along the fashionable "Tauentzienstrasse" the morning after "Crystal Night," York kept him from picking up some jewelry intending to put it back in a store's broken display: "Don't you see the 'SA' men? You don't want to mess with those guys." At the railroad station of the Olympic village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen he was part of a contingent welcoming Rudolf Hess, not long before Hitler's deputy flew to Scotland. During the writer's stay in a boarding school, the "Gauleiter" came to "visit." An upperclassman had pasted a Hitler stamp on the wall, his idea for the recommended Hitler portrait. He and his aunt Lindy were in a review theater on Berlin's "Kurfuerstendamm," when a news bulletin came through that an attempt had been made on the "Fuehrer's" life. But to the author and his friends Lunceford and Basie records were more important, and so was their poker club. Most wars cannot be comprehended in isolation. The Second World War is a prime example. The author goes back to the First World War and its origins. His father, whose diplomatic career began in 1914 in Japan and America, provided essential information, particularly about Americas entry into the war.The first war cast a very dark shadow across the entire twentieth century and, it is beginning to look like it, the time beyond. Among its immediate consequences was the emergence of extremist parties, leading in Germany to the Hitler government and the critical "Empowerment Law." Even so, there were several opportunities of avoiding the worst, and when the second war did brake out, it was as if it had been preordained.
Book Synopsis The Saxophone Winter by : Robert Harlow
Download or read book The Saxophone Winter written by Robert Harlow and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saxophone Winter´s long white season is the winter of 1938-39, when The Great Depression has exhausted the people who have lived through it and Hitler´s war, seen on the horizon, appears as salvation from its grip. It is at this moment in the history of his small hometown that Christopher Waterton gets a chance to try to dream his own dreams, but at the same time he must also deal with the distresses and machinations of both his elders and his contemporaries. This is a serious time. In a review of the book, Louis K. MacKendrick says, "[These] teenagers, the bulk of [the story´s] cast, are not fumbling, inarticulate, embarrassing gawks; they are sensible, intelligent individuals, with range, depth and substance. They are not miniaturized adults, not children, but simply, believably, teenagers of their time, and the entirety of their lives is both understood and shown in the round. Sensation, not sensationalism." But fourteen-year-old Christopher is not enclosed in a teenage world. He becomes embroiled with, and must try to understand, what is happening around him among his teachers and other adults who are powerful in Long River (pop 4000). He quite suddenly falls in love (for the first time), and Emily falls in love with him. They flaunt it, and there are repercussions. Two love-starved teachers, trapped in a Calvinist profession, become mean. Christopher´s best friend, Fielder, feels left out; and this culminates in him devising a punishment with unforeseen repercussions. Both Emily´s parents and Christopher´s own are concerned with the intensity of their children´s devotion. When they are discovered to have "necked" in a hammock at a party at Emily´s place, they are forbidden to see each other. They get around this injunction easily - with the help of Emily´s very independent grandmother. But then there is the moment when Emily signals that she is ready "to go all the way." Suddenly, Christopher is being asked to go too far too fast. When he is gifted with a saxophone at Christmas, Christopher´s life expands. If Emily is one kind of dream that appears to be coming true, the saxophone is another. The lessons he takes from Gabe, who plays saxophone in a local band, are not all about music. Gabe is living through the sad hell of a shotgun marriage. And Christopher´s other good friend, Purvis, is seventeen and an outcast from his family. When Christopher introduces him to his young English teacher, Miss Lee, the story begins its run toward its climax. Christopher´s father is General Foreman at Long River´s Public Works Yard and is also the chair of the school board. When the high school is gutted by a fire, he awards the contract to refurbish the building to a contractor not approved by the town´s mayor, who is accustomed to rewarding his friends and supporters. Later, he defends Miss Lee, who may or may not have been intimate with Purvis, and the mayor takes his revenge. So, too does the winter itself. "As much as anything," Patricia Bradbury writes , The Saxophone Winter is a tender love story between the author and the process of adolescent awakening. It can be argued that such territory is one of the writer´s toughest grounds. Such clarity of recall - for the experience of first love (so beautifully evoked here) -requires a masterful hand." The Saxophone Winter, Robert Harlow´s seventh novel, is good read for anyone from twelve to eighty and beyond.
Book Synopsis Sport, Literature, Society by : Alexis Tadié
Download or read book Sport, Literature, Society written by Alexis Tadié and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport studies and sports history have witnessed a recent substantial increase in publications. However, the relationship between literature and sport has been little explored. Sport, Literature, Society looks at a wide variety of case studies ranging from Japan to England, from India to Australia and covers sports as diverse as cycling, football, wrestling and boxing. It concentrates on historical perspectives. The contributors are all academics of international reputation and include historians of sport and literary scholars. Literature may shape our perceptions and reactions to sport as much as sport may inform our reading. As mimetic practice, as aesthetic object, as imaginative release, sport is analogous to literature and the other arts; at the same time, it can become the subject of literary, visual or musical elaborations. Literature often conceptualises the place and role of sport in culture and society. Indeed, sport inhabits literature in ways that have not been adequately studied. Sport studies have investigated the relationships between sport and society, education, gender, nation, and class. To look again at these relationships through the prism of literature enables us to change our focus and to assess the centrality of sport in culture. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

The furry red monster known as Elmo has charmed his way into hearts and homes throughout the world with his unmistakable laugh, over-the-top enthusiasm, and boundless love. Elmo’s appeal is nothing short of magical. Kids adore him, and parents find him irresistible. What is it about this little monster? Meet Kevin Clash, the man behind the Muppet and the unassuming heart and soul of Elmo. At last, the puppeteer who has performed Elmo for nearly twenty years comes out from behind the stage to share his story. Weaving together his memories of growing up with the life lessons gained from his furry red alter ego, Kevin reveals himself to be as caring, and as eager to grow and learn and love, as the very special character he brings to life. You will discover how young Kevin honed his talent entertaining the kids in his mother’s home day care with puppets he made from slippers and coat liners; how, as a struggling young artist, he realized his dream to meet and then work for his idol, Muppet creator Jim Henson; and how each and every day of performing Elmo reinforces for him what is most important in life. As Kevin has been inspired by Elmo, now we can all learn from his furry red ways. Kevin’s (and Elmo’s) thoughts on love, creativity, friendship, and optimism remind us of life’s simple truths and ultimately encourage us all to be a little bit more like Elmo—to live with joy, to love more easily, and to laugh more often.
Download or read book VIII Olympiad written by Ellen Phillips and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The VIII Olympiad, the eighth volume in The Olympic Century series, begins in the most extraordinary of cities at a most extraordinary time: Paris in the 1920s. Now the stuff of legend, it was a place where the likes of Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and Pablo Picasso discussed art and culture in the cafes by day and danced in the jazz clubs long into the night. Played out in front of this dazzling backdrop, the Games of Paris 1924 created its own legends. Paavo Nurmi, the Flying Finn, cemented his status as the most dominant distance runner of the age, claiming five gold medals in individual and team competition. In the pool, a 20-year-old American named Johnny Weissmuller won three golds in swimming and a bronze in water polo, while also winning acclaim for his chiselled physique. Weissmuller would go on to parlay his Olympic fame into a long Hollywood acting career playing Tarzan the Ape Man.The focus then shifts to 1928 and the second Winter Olympic Games, held in the luxurious French resort town of St. Moritz. The book paints a picture of exuberant crowds cheering as fearless sledders pilot primitive bobsleighs down the treacherous Cresta run, and urging the Swedish lumberjack Per Erik Hedlund through the slush for close to five hours to win the 50-kilometre cross-country ski race. It also tells the story of a smiling, 16-year-old figure skater from Norway named Sonja Henie, the unrivaled star of St. Moritz, who floated effortlessly between soft spots in the ice to win gold. Like Weissmuller four years earlier, Henie's Olympic triumph would also lead to Hollywood stardom. Juan Antonio Samaranch, former President of the International Olympic Committee, called The Olympic Century, "e;The most comprehensive history of the Olympic games ever published"e;.

Book Synopsis Sesame Street: Ready for School! by : Rosemarie T. Truglio
Download or read book Sesame Street: Ready for School! written by Rosemarie T. Truglio and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sesame Street, the most trusted name in preschool education, offers a complete, user-friendly guide to help parents prepare their children, ages 2-5, for academic, physical, and social success. For the past 50 years, Sesame Street has stood at the forefront of child development, stimulating and nurturing the minds of preschoolers not only through the iconic TV show, but also through books, games, mobile apps, and community engagement initiatives. With Ready for School!, Senior VP of Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop Dr. Rosemarie Truglio shares all the research-based, curriculum-directed school readiness skills that have made Sesame Street the preeminent children's TV program, and that every parent needs in order to get their preschooler ready for lifelong learning. Each of the book's eight chapters focuses on a key area: language, literacy, math, science, logic & reasoning, social & emotional development, healthy habits, and the arts. An essential dynamic of Ready for School! is its emphasis on the importance of play in a child's learning process. To respond to that need, dozens of "Play & Learn" activities are included to aid parents in educating their children: at the kitchen table, on the bus, in the park, or in the preschool classroom while playing together. In addition, the book recommends scores of hints, tips, ideas for useful products, and deep-dives on more complex topics for parents, all designed to make preparing young kids for school easy and joyful.
