Book excerpt: Ella Keyes thought the death of her twin brother Stuart was the last time she'd let life surprise her. She's up for tenure at her university, she escaped a doomed engagement, and her fluffy cat knows exactly when to expect her home every day. But when her grandmother passes and leaves Ella her house, Ella discovers that the third floor corridor of keys is more than just a family pun. The seemingly-unremarkable keys don't unlock any doors in the house, but each time Ella touches one, something in her life shifts. Her life's carefully-grown roots are ripped out of their soil. Flowers bloom in the middle of a Buffalo winter. A blind date with the wrong person ends up being just maybe the right one. Her grandmother's batty twin sister turns up every day searching for something even she doesn't know how to identify, and Ella's parents refuse to return her calls. Worse, she finds trinkets from Stuart everywhere she goes, ghosts of a game they used to play. The leash she's kept on life's surprises for three years has snapped, and Ella will have to learn that the road to peace starts with letting go of control and that sometimes the best family you have is the family you build.

But the much loved and beautiful daughter of Lord and Lady Pavier, of the noble House of Wingrave, is set to disoblige her family in marriage when she rejects the fabulously wealthy, Lord Biggins... the brilliant match the family craved. A dash to Gretna Green, finds Lady Alicia disinherited… and the newly married pair are forced to flee England to escape his lordship's wrath. Some years later, the couple's only child, Ella, is left an orphan and the four-year-old girl is now alone in the world. Although unwanted by the noble Wingrave family, the girl is nonetheless taken in… and Ella must learn to negotiate her way… with a family who will neither forgive nor forget: but indeed, seems determined to extend only enmity towards the child. While quietly employed in a teaching post at a Parish charity school, the twenty-one-year-old Ella is once again recalled to the family home, historic Deems Castle, only for Ella to discover she is to be cast as a reluctant bride in marriage the following morning, to a Frenchman unknown to her. To banish Ella from English shores, seems the family's coup de grace: the finishing stroke, against a girl innocent of any charge. This is a story of intrigue, love and loyalty… more especially when, at the time of the fear and turbulence of the French Revolution, the truest love can be over-shadowed by death.

Join Doris on her escapades through three marriages and a dozen boyfriends. Miss Kansas City Kitty Doris Markham’s Story is based on a true story about one spirited country girl’s struggles to survive in the Kansas City when it was a wild town; some called it “The Paris of the Plains” with illegal gambling, speakeasies, gangsters, barbecue and jazz. Her story is a love story, okay several love stories mixed with drama and comedy. People described Doris Markham as a pistol, a free spirit and stubborn. She could be called an early woman’s rights activist because she often said “What’s right for the goose, is right for the gander”. In this book you will see Kansas City from a working girl’s view and find gangsters, kidnapping, murder, prostitution, speakeasies, supper clubs, bars and even a famous person or two. When Doris won a Kansas City Kitty competition, her life changed.

Two years later, fate intervenes, and they end up as accidental roommates. Now Zoe’s seeing a lot more of Dylan than she bargained for and it’s even harder to resist peeking the second time round.

Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, the sky tore open. Don't worry, it's not as bad as it sounds. Ever since Earth joined the Grand Narrative, a collective of alternate worlds with different types of humans and levels of technology, magic has been a part of life. However, while it's common enough, magical problems sometimes take an expert (or two) to resolve. Enter the Fixers, licensed magicians whose job is to help people with their arcane tech support. Ella Masterson is a high school freshman living in London. (London, Ontario. Not England. The other London.) She's grown up idolizing magical girl anime and developed a talent for her own magic. When she gets a job working for the town Fixer, adventures abound. Chasing an invisible, talking cat through downtown? Facing off against a water nymph drowning people in the Thames River? All in a day's work! But there's a bigger problem in southern Ontario than rogue fairies, and Ella might be caught right in the middle of it...

Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
