Book Synopsis The Ecology of Large Mammals in Central Yellowstone by : Robert A. Garrott
Download or read book The Ecology of Large Mammals in Central Yellowstone written by Robert A. Garrott and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2008-11-25 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an authoritative work on the ecology of some of America’s most iconic large mammals in a natural environment - and of the interplay between climate, landscape, and animals in the interior of the world’s first and most famous national park.Central Yellowstone includes the range of one of the largest migratory populations of bison in North America as well as a unique elk herd that remains in the park year round. These populations live in a varied landscape with seasonal and often extreme patterns of climate and food abundance. The reintroduction of wolves into the park a decade ago resulted in scientific and public controversy about the effect of large predators on their prey, a debate closely examined in the book. Introductory chapters describe the geography, geology and vegetation of the ecosystem. The elk and bison are then introduced and their population ecology described both pre- and post– wolf introduction, enabling valuable insights into the demographic and behavioral consequences for their ungulate prey. Subsequent chapters describe the wildlife-human interactions and show how scientific research can inform the debate and policy issues surrounding winter recreation in Yellowstone. The book closes with a discussion of how this ecological knowledge can be used to educate the public, both about Yellowstone itself and about science, ecology and the environment in general. Yellowstone National Park exemplifies some of the currently most hotly debated and high-profile ecological, wildlife management, and environmental policy issues and this book will have broad appeal not only to academic ecologists, but also to natural resource students, managers, biologists, policy makers, administrators and the general public. Unrivalled descriptions of ecological processes in a world famous ecosystem, based on information from 16 years of painstaking field work and collaborations among 66 scientists and technical experts and 15 graduate studies Detailed studies of two charismatic North American herbivore species – elk and bison Description of the restoration of wolves into central Yellowstone and their ecological interactions with their elk and bison prey Illustrated with numerous evocative colour photographs and stunning maps

Book excerpt: The migrations of Wyoming's hooved mammals--mule deer, pronghorn, elk, and moose--between their seasonal ranges are some of the longest and most noteworthy migrations on the North American continent. Wild Migrations presents the previously untold story of these migrations, combining wildlife science and cartography. Facing pages cover more than 50 migration topics, ranging from ecology to conservation and management, enriched by visually stunning graphics and maps, and an introductory essay by Emilene Ostlind.

Book Synopsis The Elk of North America by : Olaus J. Murie
Download or read book The Elk of North America written by Olaus J. Murie and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an outstanding treatise on one of America’s most widely hunted and most important big-game animals. Although thousands of sportsmen take to the field each year in quest of trophies, the perpetuation of elk hunting in America depends entirely upon proper management of the herds. Whether management succeeds or fails in future years will depend upon how well the public understands the problems of the game administrators and of the animals themselves. Everything the sportsman or naturalist would wish to know about the elk in included in this new volume. Habits, food preferences, seasonal movements, anatomy, antler development, and management problems are interestingly and thoroughly discussed. Written by one of America’s greatest field naturalists, this new book has behind it a lifetime spent in intimate study of the subject. Dr. Murie is recognized as the world’s foremost authority on the American elk and his comprehensive research on elk in the Jackson Hole National Monument forms the basis for this book. Everyone interested in America’s wildlife will want this volume in his library. The book is copiously illustrated with half-tone and original line drawings by the author.
Book Synopsis Carryover Effects of Winter Feeding on Migration, Habitat Selection and Foraging Ecology of Elk in Western Wyoming by : Jennifer D. Jones
Download or read book Carryover Effects of Winter Feeding on Migration, Habitat Selection and Foraging Ecology of Elk in Western Wyoming written by Jennifer D. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resource distribution on ungulate seasonal ranges is commonly altered without consideration of potential carryover effects on year-round foraging strategies. Supplemental feeding of temperate ungulates is a widespread management practice that manipulates forage resources and has potential to enhance nutritional condition and influence behavior. We tested the hypothesis that winter feeding enhances the nutritional condition of migratory elk, with carryover effects that influence migration and summer foraging strategies. We used global positioning system location data and behavioral observations of 230 adult, female elk (Cervus elaphus) that used feedgrounds (n=151) or native winter range (n=79) in western Wyoming. Attendance at feedgrounds slightly enhanced the nutritional condition of fed elk, with an average of 1.22% more body fat than unfed elk. Migration behavior differed with fed elk arriving on summer range later and leaving earlier, resulting in 26 fewer days on summer range. Fed elk occupied summer ranges that were 75% smaller than unfed elk, and while resource selection was similar, fed elk showed less selection for foraging habitats and displayed a weaker fluctuation in their hourly use of forest than unfed elk. In contrast to differences found at broad scale habitat use, winter feeding did not carryover to influence fine scale time budgets of fed and unfed elk. Our findings suggest that alteration of resources, including anthropogenic manipulations, can be strong and consistent enough to generate carryover effects on the migration behavior and year-round foraging strategies of temperate, migratory ungulates with implications for management actions.
