Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets: Elijah to Christ In quest of truth and light on these prophets I have gone to many books, and the best Of them have sent me back ere long to the Bible. For counsel and encouragement I have looked to a few friends, and especially to three: Walter L. Lingle, D. D., presiding genius at Montreat; Wm. M. Mcpheeters, D. D., professor Of He brew in the Columbia Theological Seminary; and George A. Wauchope, Ph. D., professor Of English in the University Of South Carolina. Each of these in his own way has let the cour tesy of a friend shine through the discrimination of a scholar. Other men have laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. Book Synopsis Elijah Prophet of Carmel by : Jane Ackerman
Download or read book Elijah Prophet of Carmel written by Jane Ackerman and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Carmelites, Elijah is considered their legendary founder and patron. This study explores Elijah in Scripture, legend, and Carmelite documents. Members of the three monotheistic faiths have always told stories of what the prophet Elijah has done and is still expected to do in sacred history. He is perhaps most appreciated by members of the Carmelite Order, known for its contemplative and pastoral orientation. Elijah is considered their legendary founder and traditional patron. Carmelites rank him as one of their greatest spiritual models. Their coat of arms displays his flaming sword, Mount Carmel, and Elijah's proclamation, "With zeal I have been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts." This book inquires into this deep appreciation. It examines the linkage between the Order and the prophet over time. More Information Beginning with the oldest knowledge we have about Elijah, coming from Scripture, Elijah Prophet of Carmel briefly sketches his role in the three faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It then turns to what the distant, but influential, Christian antecedents of the Carmelite Order, the desert hermits and the early Fathers, wrote about the zealous man of God. As the Carmelite Order was founded, achieved its corporate identity, and changed over time, so did its views of its legendary model. Interaction between storytelling about Elijah and Carmelites' understanding of themselves continues even to the present. As thoughts from the past about the prophet continue to influence them, both Teresian Carmelites and Carmelites of the Ancient Observance of our times are developing a brand-new tradition of him, the tradition of Elijah's double charism.

Download or read book The Divine Dance written by Richard Rohr and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if changing our perception of God has the potential to change everything? God is not what you think. Visions of an angry, distant, moral scorekeeper or a supernatural Santa Claus handing out cosmic lottery tickets to those who attend the right church or say the right prayer dominate our culture. For many others, God has become irrelevant or simply unbelievable. In The Divine Dance, Fr. Richard Rohr (with Mike Morrell) points readers to an unlikely opening beyond this divinity impasse: the at-times forgotten, ancient mystery of the Trinity—God as utterly one, yet three. Drawing from Scripture, theology, and the deepest insights of mystics, philosophers, and sages throughout history, Fr. Rohr presents a compelling alternative to aloof and fairytale versions of God: One God, belovedly in communion, as All-Vulnerable, All-Embracing, and All-Given to you and me. The Divine Dance makes accessible and practicable the Christian tradition's most surprising gift... God as Community...as Friendship...as Dance. Are you ready to join in?

Book Synopsis The History of Israel and Judah by : Alfred Edersheim
Download or read book The History of Israel and Judah written by Alfred Edersheim and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Reign of Ahab to the Decline of the Two Kingdoms Thus much must for the present suffice - the more so, as in the next Volume (which will conclude the Old Testament History) the opportunity will necessarily present itself for larger retrospect and wider survey. It only remains to add that the treatment of the subject in this Volume will be found in ac cordance with the progressive plan of this work, repeatedly in dicated in previous Volumes. Alike the critical and exegetical notes will be found more frequent and more full, and the general treatment more detailed, and designed for more ad vanced readers. A new Element in the present Volume is the light brought to bear on this period from the ancient monu ments. We live in days when more attention than ever before is given to the critical study of the Old Testament 3 in days also when attacks are chiefly directed against the trustworthiness, the credibility, and, as it seems to us, the Divine Authority, in its true sense, of the Old Testament. There are those, we will gladly believe, who can disjoint, and in logical connection with it, re-interpret the Old Testament, and yet retain their full faith in its direct Divine character, and in its preparation for the Christ. We must frankly confess that we are not of their number. There is, indeed, a general Divine character in the Old Testament, and a general preparation in it for the New, whatever historical views we may take of it, or whatever inter pretations we may give of it. We would even advance beyond this, and say that Christ and Christianity have their absolute truth, quite irrespective of the Old Testament. But to us at least Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ is the direct outcome of the Old Testament, as well as its higher fulfilment: not only a light to lighten the Gentiles, but, and even in this very respect also the glory of Thy people Israel.
