Book excerpt: Until the End By: Katie Barker In the near future, two sisters, Alaina and Hayley Mitchell, are forced to flee their home during a conflict with a neighboring community, and everything they thought they knew in their lives changes. Follow their journey as they face hardships, separate, and grow into young adults, taking very different paths in life, only to reunite in conflict—at odds over politics and their love for a very special boy in their lives. One sister had a manipulatable gene that made her extremely desirable to the powers that be. Until the End is about hope, and during the times we live in, the best we can do is have hope. The author hopes readers take away an awareness of the effects of love, both positive and negative, and that there is hope as long as you look for it in the right places.
Book Synopsis Father Elijah by : Michael D. O'Brien
Download or read book Father Elijah written by Michael D. O'Brien and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael O'Brien presents a thrilling apocalyptic novel about the condition of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of time. It explores the state of the modern world, and the strengths and weaknesses of the contemporary religious scene, by taking his central character, Father Elijah Schäfer, a Carmelite priest, on a secret mission for the Vatican which embroils him in a series of crises and subterfuges affecting the ultimate destiny of the Church. Father Elijah is a convert from Judaism, a survivor of the Holocaust, a man once powerful in Israel. For twenty years he has been "buried in the dark night of Carmel" on the mountain of the prophet Elijah. The Pope and the Cardinal Secretary of State call him out of obscurity and give him a task of the highest sensitivity: to penetrate into the inner circles of a man whom they believe may be the Antichrist. Their purpose: to call the Man of Sin to repentance, and thus to postpone the great tribulation long enough to preach the Gospel to the whole world. In this richly textured tale, Father Elijah crosses Europe and the Middle East, moves through the echelons of world power, meets saints and sinners, presidents, judges, mystics, embattled Catholic journalists, faithful priests and a conspiracy of traitors within the very House of God. This is an apocalypse in the old literary sense, but one that was written in the light of Christian revelation.

Download or read book Worn Out written by Madison Van Oort and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An immersive, first-hand account of retail worker surveillance and resistance in the digital age. Technology has sped up the world of retail clothing, rushing affordable, trendy garments to consumers and enriching multinational retail giants like Zara and H&M. But beneath the success of fast fashion, there is a grimmer story to be told—that of the people who do the actual producing and selling. Working undercover in two of the world’s largest fast fashion stores in New York City, Madison Van Oort observed firsthand how data and surveillance shape the lives of low-status workers in an industry in flux—and how these workers are fighting back. Worn Out provides an on-the-ground look at how technology helps create this just-in-time workforce, how feminized and racialized workers experience and respond to new forms of digital control, and how collective struggles for racial, gender, and economic justice in and around retail spaces inform these workers’ resistance. Worn Out draws on interviews with dozens of front-line workers and labor activists, and on evidence gathered at corporate conferences, to expose the exploitative reality of retail labor in the digital age. Van Oort shows how digital tools lubricate the shift toward just-in-time retail by collecting real-time data on not only customer behavior but also worker performance and how these tools—including automated scheduling platforms, biometric timeclocks, and cashier metrics—increase these workers’ already heightened insecurity. One of the first ethnographies of this “thriving” industry, Van Oort’s book pulls open the curtain between production and consumption and reveals the real cost of fast fashion.
