Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener’s magnificent saga of the West is an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America’s past, the story of Colorado—the Centennial State—is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe. In Centennial, trappers, traders, homesteaders, gold seekers, ranchers, and hunters are brought together in the dramatic conflicts that shape the destiny of the legendary West—and the entire country. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Hawaii. Praise for Centennial “A hell of a book . . . While he fascinates and engrosses, Michener also educates.”—Los Angeles Times “An engrossing book . . . imaginative and intricate . . . teeming with people and giving a marvelous sense of the land.”—The Plain Dealer “Michener is America’s best writer, and he proves it once again in Centennial. . . . If you’re a Michener fan, this book is a must. And if you’re not a Michener fan, Centennial will make you one.”—The Pittsburgh Press “An absorbing work . . . Michener is a superb storyteller.”—BusinessWeek

Book excerpt: “A fine book…In the twenty-two chapters that comprise the background and the campaign narrative, the author is at his best when he moves away from the Washington scene to detail the field operations. But it is the second part of the book—seven chapters labeled “Facets”—that moves Centennial Campaign into the realm of the exceptional. Here Dr. Gray combines impressive research, careful analysis, and sound deduction to reconstruct Indian movements, locations, and concentrations.”—Western Historical Quarterly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezra Meeker lived ninety-eight highly productive years. At times endearing and captivating, he could also be exasperating and irrational. Once he committed to a cause, he was an unabashed promoter. Meeker devoted his final three decades to commemorating the Oregon Trail. A part of his story no one has previously told, this volume begins in 1901 and completes an epic biography. One of Washington Territory’s earliest pioneers, Meeker first came west on the overland trail in 1852. He became a Puyallup community builder, agricultural tycoon, and world traveler before hop lice and the Panic of 1893 devoured his fortune. He dallied in mining and joined the Klondike gold rush, spending four years as a Yukon store proprietor. At age 75 he trekked east over the Oregon Trail with oxen and a covered wagon, setting markers along the way, and became a national celebrity. He visited New York, Washington, DC, and the White House, and managed to convince regular citizens, the rich and famous, governors, legislators, and even three U.S. presidents to support his trail preservation schemes. Never one to shy away from adventure, his other exploits included publishing books, lecture tours, additional Oregon Trail expeditions (one in a bi-plane), attending the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, experimenting with motion pictures, founding societies, cruising in what may have been the first motorized RV, performing in a Wild West show, and roaming the country selling commemorative coins. In the end, Meeker’s extraordinary efforts were crucial to saving the trail.

It reflects the author¿s Texas rootedness unapologetically and offers a polemical but thoughtful indictment of the intellectual prejudice against rootedness; but it is ultimately about the universal human struggle with origins. Book excerpt: Whither Thou Goest is the first nonfiction book to focus on this little-known period in American history of 1878, when the world was in the depths of depression like none before. In two parallel journeys that take place in the past and the present, Whither Thou Goest attempts to make people long gone to come back alive. It examines who we are, where we've been, and has everything to do with where we are going. The first journey started in 1878. The author's great-grandaunt and uncle pioneers Mary Jane and Theo Beardsley left their small-town home in upstate New York with their two young daughters, Eva and Frankie, and followed their dream of a new life in the American West. Swallowed up by time, they became forgotten by all they knew back East. All that is but one. The second journey started in 1996. By chance, the author learned that Frankie's family home was now an Oregon museum. He discovered a small diary kept by Eva a bare-boned chronicle of their journey west. The inspired author and his wife decided to follow their trail across America and learn all they could about 1878 America and his relatives, living and dead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This oral and pictorial history chronicles the lives and separate worlds of black and white communities in Jim Crow era Colorado County, TX. First settled by Stephen F. Austin’s colonists in the early nineteenth century, Colorado County has deep roots in Texas history. Mainly rural and agrarian until late in the twentieth century, it was a cotton-growing region whose population was evenly divided between blacks and whites. These life-long neighbors led separate and unequal lives, memories of which still linger today. To preserve those memories, Patsy Cravens began interviewing and photographing the older residents of Colorado County in the 1980s. In this book, Cravens presents photographs and recollections of the last generation, black and white, who grew up in the era of Jim Crow segregation. And they have engrossing stories to tell. They recall grinding poverty and rollicking fun in the Great Depression, losing crops and livestock to floods, working for the WPA, romances gone wrong and love gone right, dirty dancing, church and faith, sharecropping, quilting, raising children, racism and bigotry, and even the horrific lynching of two African American teenagers in 1935. These stories reveal an amazing resiliency and generosity of spirit, despite the hardships that have filled most of their lives. They also capture a now lost rural way of life that was once common across the South.
