Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published 2003. In the twentieth century, Britain was rich in artistic achievement, especially in sculpture. Just some of those working in this field were Jacob Epstein, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Anthony Caro, Richard Long, Mona Hatoum and Anish Kapoor. The work of these and other known and less well-known artists has an astonishing variety and expressive power, a range and strength that has placed Britain at the hub of the artistic world. Alan Windsor has compiled a concise biographical dictionary of sculpture in Britain in book form. Richly informative and easy-to-use, this guide is an art-lover's and expert's essential reference. Written by scholars, the entries are cross-referenced and each concise biographical outline provides the relevant facts about the artist's life, a brief characterization of the artist's work, and, where appropriate, major bibliographical references.

Excerpt: ...achievement, it is easy to see that it is the form and action that interest the artist--the expression of the body, not that of the face. This may be seen by examining his statuettes of male and female figures. They are intensely sculptural in a quattro centist feeling an 1, unlike what is not infrequently the characteristic of the smaller works of smaller men, they never suggest the " ornamental bronze." The daring pose of "Orpheus" expresses the feelings of the music-making beast-charmer better than any face could do. Adapted from the artist's picture with the same motif, this tripping, careless youth steps it amid the beasts he leads with his song, not unconsciously but deliberately. Audacious as it is in arrangement, it is a very perfect piece of modelling of its kind. Similarly, in the beautiful "Fata Morgana," modelled and cast in silver for Mr. Stuart M. Samuel, M.P., the unusually fine type of the girl who sat for it and the effect of her pose have interested the artist vastly more than the face and head. In such a case, it would appear, the sculptor comes forward and the painter recedes. The characteristic of Mr. Swan's work, then, is the fact that he does not force his anatomical knowledge upon the spectator. Indeed, he partially conceals it and, as has been suggested already, he passes from the movement of the animal to the movement of its surface. If this be true, he is herein a disciple of Ruskin, who protested against the over-elaborate study and display of anatomy, which is apt soon to degenerate into posturemaking, and the result of it gives us science rather than art. The artist who knows something of science must forget it when he begins his work, or, like the dead objects of his study, his...

Book excerpt: "The editorial team, and invited experts in the field, have drawn on a mass of archival and scholarly material, including Gunnis's own extensive unpublished archive, to rewrite all the major lives of the sculptors, and to add over 1,000 new ones. Each entry gives a brief biography of the sculptor, where possible, followed by a list of his or her known works. Each work is identified by date and location, past or present, and provenance, materials, exhibitions, known preparatory sketches and models, and bibliographical references are also recorded." "The dictionary is a treasure trove of information for sculpture, architectural and art historians. It will also be of great interest to enthusiasts and collectors, and to those with a general interest in British cultural history who wish to identify or locate works of sculpture in Britain and to learn more about the artists who created them."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Framed in a lucid discussion of the intellectual issues surrounding the postmodern movement, the essays in this book re-examine the course of twentieth-century art through the work of twenty-five major sculptors. McEvilley masterfully traces the evolution of modern sculpture from the readymades of Marcel Duchamp to the anti-painting statements of the 1960s to the spiritualism and conceptualism of the 1980s and 1990s. This is a groundbreaking work in the field of art criticism and a fundamental text for anyone interested in the history of current art and culture. Allworth Press, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, publishes a broad range of books on the visual and performing arts, with emphasis on the business of art. Our titles cover subjects such as graphic design, theater, branding, fine art, photography, interior design, writing, acting, film, how to start careers, business and legal forms, business practices, and more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marion Harry Alexander Spielmann was born in London on May 22, 1858 into quite a large family. Spielmann attended University College School, and later University College London. Shortly after, he began working for the Pall Mall Gazette, from 1883-1890, where he became a celebrated art critic. He later was the editor of Magazine of Art, founder of Black and White, juror for the 1898 Brussels Fine Art Exhibition, and contributor to many publications, including the Illustrated London News. During a time when Impressionism was gaining popularity, Spielmann inserted himself frequently in debates over aesthetics, and made spaces for debates to brew. Spielmann did not care for modern art and was considered to be a traditionalist. This new edition is dedicated to Michel Langlais de Langlade.
