Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, National University of Singapore (Asian Research Institute), language: English, abstract: Rasa (flavor , sentiments , aesthetic delight , flavor of mood , taste, feeling ) is the principle which encompasses the entire body of Indian literature. Although other literary theories such as Dhvani (suggestion, implication), Alankara (figure of speech) are also important terms of Indian aesthetics and poetics, these theories either originated in Rasa or appear in conjunction with it. Rasa is typical of both Indian poetics and Eastern poetics. As one type of Eastern poetics, Rasa can be used to enrich Vietnamese poetics and literary theory, which now is mainly preoccupied with Western viewpoints. In addition, Indian culture has had significant influence on Vietnamese culture, as a result Buddhism is present in all of Vietnam, and Hinduism in Cham and Khmer areas .

Book excerpt: Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali is a sublime expression of the divine in nature.Tagore was one of the greatest poets of modern India. He drew upon a rich and varied tradition, ranging from Sanskrit writings to Western literature, and enriched Bengali culture with his compositions. He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. Tagore attempted to express in his poetry the divine spirit that he glimpsed in nature. W.B. Yeats noted that his poetry had “an innocence, a simplicity that one does not find elsewhere in nature.” It touches the soul with its serenity and lyrical quality. Gitanjali is truly a treasured companion on life’s long journey.

Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore Gitanjali is a collection of poems by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The original Bengali collection of 157 poems was published on August 14, 1910. The English Gitanjali or Song Offerings is a collection of 103 English poems of Tagore's own English translations of his Bengali poems first published in November 1912 by the India Society of London. It contained translations of 53 poems from the original Bengali Gitanjali, as well as 50 other poems which were from his drama Achalayatan and eight other books of poetry -- mainly Gitimalya (17 poems), Naivedya (15 poems) and Kheya (11 poems). The translations were often radical, leaving out or altering large chunks of the poem and in one instance fusing two separate poems (song 95, which unifies songs 89,90 of Naivedya). The translations were undertaken prior to a visit to England in 1912, where the poems were extremely well received. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English Gitanjali.

Book excerpt: The Book Is A Major Critical Attempt That Tries To Evaluate TagoreýS Literary Genius In The Background Of Modernism Which According To The Author Chiefly Consists In A Single-Minded Preoccupation With The Body Of Poetry With The Consequent Belief In The Self-Sufficiency Of Language And In An Oppressive And Overwhelming Consciousness Of Evil In The World. The Author Tries, Following The Great PoetýS Own View Of Criticism, To Understand The Way In Which The World Expresses Itself In The Body Of TagoreýS Poetic Creation. He Examines How The Awareness Of Evil Grows In TagoreýS Work Until It Becomes Pervasive In His Final Phase. The Critic Shows How The Poet Moves From Romantic Effusion And Melancholy To The Self-Processed Tranquillity Of Divine Love And From There Towards Western Humanism On The One Hand And To A Realisation Of ýThe Gracious Aspect Of The Terribleý On The Other.

Book excerpt: This collection provides a lucid introduction for those unfamiliar with Tagore's work, while simultaneously presenting importnat new scholarship and novel interpretation. Rabindranath Tagore is considered the greatest modern writer of India. He is also one of the great social and political figures in modern Indian history. After he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913, Tagore's reputation in the West has been based primarily on his mystical poetry. But beyond poetry, Tagore wrote novels of social realism, treating nationalism, religious intolerance, and violence. He wrote analytic works on social reform, education, and science- even engaging in a brief dialogue with Albert Einstein. Without ignoring religion and mysticism, the essays in this collection concentrate on this other Tagore. They explicate Tagore's writings in relation to its historical and literary context and, at the same time, draw out those aspects of Tagore's work that continue to bear on contemporary society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man, Rabindranath Tagore wrote a series of letters to his niece during what he described as the most productive period of his life. By turns contemplative and playful, gentle and impassioned, Tagore’s letters abound in incredible insights—from sharply comical portrayals of English sahibs to lively anecdotes about family life, from thoughts on the nature of poetry to spiritual contemplation and inner feeling. And coursing through all these letters, like a ceaseless heartbeat, is Tagore’s deep love for the natural splendour of Bengal. In this manner, this volume also serves as a prose companion to his magnificent work Gitanjali. Letters from a Young Poet shimmers with wit and warmth, and offers unforgettable vignettes of the young poet in those happy days before extraordinary fame found him.
