Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Natural Philosophy This work is the result of many years' experience in teaching the science of Physics. In its preparation, the author has endeavored to keep constantly in mind that its value must depend on its availability as a text-book. Accordingly be has made such a selection of the facts and principles embraced in the wide range of Natural Philosophy as, in his judgment, is best suited to the requirements of the pupil. While due attention has been given to the recent progress in Physics, including the latest methods and inventions, it has not been forgotten that all facts are equally fresh to the tyro, although all are not of equal importance, as regards either their fitness for developing the theory of the science, or their application to the practical affairs of life. For this reason, nothing has been introduced for the sake of its novelty; nor have cardinal principles been omitted, because a former generation of pupils has studied them. It has been an object of careful thought to present the science, in all its departments, in a manner at once systematic and symmetrical. Of course, no pretense is made of exhausting the subject, but it is hoped that the student will find in this treatise all that is necessary for his purposes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Designed for Academies and High Schools In the present volume I have attempted to exhibit the leading principles of Natural Philosophy in a methodical and scientific form, without any use of the mathematics beyond the first elements of Algebra, Geometry, and Plane Trigonometry. Every principle is enunciated clearly and concisely, and, as far as practicable, I have exhibited the evidence upon which every principle rests. Even when the full demonstration involves an acquaintance with the more difficult parts of the mathematics, I have endeavored to give an outline of the philosophical principles upon which the mathematical demonstration is founded. Those principles which are considered specially important have been printed in italics, so as readily to attract the attention of the pupil. While the leading obj eet has been to teach general principles, care has been taken to combine with them a variety of useful information, and particularly to give an account of many recent discoveries in every branch of the science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Being an Experimental Introduction to the Study of the Physical Sciences Being again called upon to prepare a new edition of this work, I have anxiously endeavored to render it as complete as possible, and worthy, in some degree, of that patronage with which it has been previously honored. I hope that none of the rich contri butions to experimental physical science, which have been made public since the last edition, have been overlooked. In making these necessary alterations and additions, it has been my earliest desire, never to lose sight of the humble and limited design of this work, and which, indeed, first induced me to offer it to pub lic notice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Natural Philosophy: Copiously Illustrated by Familiar Experiments, and Containing Descriptions of Instruments, With Directions for Using; Designed for the Use of Schools and Academies From long personal Observation, we are satisfied that a want of the requisite practical directions renders useless a very large portion Of the apparatus for scientific illustrations purchased and deposited in the various institutions of our country; thus depriving the pupils in those institutions of a large portion of that practical instruction which their wants demand. Text-books Of Natural Philosophy seldom contain any really serviceable directions for the inexperienced manipulator. In prescribing the more Obvious rules, they too Often pass over the real difficulties in philosophical experimenting. Nor is this a matter for wonder, since such works are so Often prepared by those unacquainted with the structure and practical Operation of the instruments described by them. Download or read book Elements of Natural Philosophy written by J. A. Gillet and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: For the Use of Schools and Academies This book is an abridgement of the "Natural Philosophy" by the same authors, with such changes as were required to adapt it to younger pupils. As the larger book is in no sense a revision of the "Natural Philosophy" of the Cambridge Course of Physics, but an entirely new work, differing from its predecessor both in matter and in method of presentation, so this book is equally independent of the earlier "Handbook of Natural Philosophy." Two kinds of type have been used, as in the larger book, with a view to adapting it to the wants of different schools. The matter in the larger type forms a brief and easy course, complete in itself and sufficient for classes that can spend only a single school term in the study. The portions in smaller type will enable teachers to extend this course more or less, according to their personal tastes or the ability of their pupils. Those who have time for the whole book may find the division convenient in reviews and examinations, and also in fixing the minimum to be required of pupils who have little taste or aptitude for physics.
