Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy, Vol. 1 of 2: Embracing the Two Departments of the Intellect and the Sensibilities This work, in its original form, appeared a number of years since, and has passed through successive edi tions. It has been favourably received by the pub lic; perhaps as much so as other philosophical works. Nevertheless, desirous of rendering it as perfect as possible, I have recently subjected it to re-examina tion and revision, and accordingly it appears now in a somewhat new form, in some respects condensed and in others enlarged, and with the results of the author's latest inquiries and emendations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2: Embracing the Two Departments of the Intellect and the Sensibilities The department of the mind, on which we now propose to enter, is not only distinct from the other great divisions, hav ing a nature and characteristics of its own, but possesses, we may venture to assert, equal importance and interest. If man had been formed of intellect only, of cold and unimpassioned perceptivity; if he could merely have perceived, compared, associated, and reasoned, without a solitary emotion or desire, without any of the various affections of our nature, without sorrow for suffering or sympathy in joy in a word, if he had been all head and no heart, the human soul would have shown not only a different, but a depressed and inferior as pect, compared with what it does at present. But happi ly and wisely, it is far otherwise. We find him constituted with a sensitive, as well as an intellectual nature with pow ers of feeling, as well as of thought. It is the sensitive part of human nature, (including in the term the moral as well as the natural affections, ) which Socrates, if we may rely on the doctrines and conversations that are handed down to us, particularly turned his attention to and on account of which he was pronounced by the Oracle the wisest of all men liv ing. It is here that we are let into the secrets of men's ac tions. It is in this department of the mind we find the can ses, which render them restless and inquisitive, which prompt to efforts both good and evil, and make the wide world a theatre, where vice and virtue, hope and fear, and joy and suffering mingle in perpetual conflict. Book Synopsis The Measure of Merit by : John Carson
Download or read book The Measure of Merit written by John Carson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have modern democracies squared their commitment to equality with their fear that disparities in talent and intelligence might be natural, persistent, and consequential? In this wide-ranging account of American and French understandings of merit, talent, and intelligence over the past two centuries, John Carson tells the fascinating story of how two nations wrestled scientifically with human inequalities and their social and political implications. Surveying a broad array of political tracts, philosophical treatises, scientific works, and journalistic writings, Carson chronicles the gradual embrace of the IQ version of intelligence in the United States, while in France, the birthplace of the modern intelligence test, expert judgment was consistently prized above such quantitative measures. He also reveals the crucial role that determinations of, and contests over, merit have played in both societies--they have helped to organize educational systems, justify racial hierarchies, classify army recruits, and direct individuals onto particular educational and career paths. A contribution to both the history of science and intellectual history, The Measure of Merit illuminates the shadow languages of inequality that have haunted the American and French republics since their inceptions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Parts The attempt made in the following pages to determine the meaning of some of the principal terms employed in Philosophy, may, to some, appear an ambitious undertaking; while, to others, it may seem merely a verbal affair. If to emulate the Great of old he ambition, to that the author must plead guilty; for Aristotle himself composed a Philosophical Vocabulary; and, on the other hand, that the object of such a work is useful and dignified, will be allowed by those who are best acquainted with the difficulties of Philosophy. I may mention in particular two distinguished philosophers of the present day, who have thus expressed themselves.
