Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our beliefs come in degrees. I'm 70% confident it will rain tomorrow, and 0.001% sure my lottery ticket will win. What's more, we think these degrees of belief should abide by certain principles if they are to be rational. For instance, you shouldn't believe that a person's taller than 6ft more strongly than you believe that they're taller than 5ft, since the former entails the latter. In Dutch Book arguments, we try to establish the principles of rationality for degrees of belief by appealing to their role in guiding decisions. In particular, we show that degrees of belief that don't satisfy the principles will always guide action in some way that is bad or undesirable. In this Element, we present Dutch Book arguments for the principles of Probabilism, Conditionalization, and the Reflection Principle, among others, and we formulate and consider the most serious objections to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Dutch Grammar The fifth edition of this book was almost entirely like the fourth, not so this sixth edition, which has indeed undergone such a good deal of alterations and enlargements as might make it appear to be quite a brannew work apart. Every part of the grammar has been thoroughly revised according to the wants and interests of the present day - A pretty complete list of Dutch proverbial and other expressions has been added, and at the end of the book the reader will be agreeably surprised in finding a sufficient number of English translations from pieces of the Chrestomathy (both prose and poetry) which all former editions stood in want of and for the composition of which I am indebted to my sister, Elisabeth Hoogvliet, teacher of the English language. My preface might end here, if I did not feel it incumbent on me, by a few words to express my thankfulness for those many flattering and encouraging signs of sympathy, which were sent to me by English and American readers of the 4th and 5th editions of this little book. From one of these letters, which is written in an agreeable witty style, and which procured me a great deal of pleasure in reading, I cannot help quoting a few passages here. Download or read book Dutch Culture in the Golden Age written by J. L. Price and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth century is considered the Dutch Golden Age, a time when the Dutch were at the forefront of social change, economics, the sciences, and art. In Dutch Culture in the Golden Age, eminent historian J. L. Price goes beyond the standard descriptions of the cultural achievements of the Dutch during this time by placing these many achievements within their social context. Price’s central argument is that alongside the innovative tendencies in Dutch society and culture there were powerful conservative and reactionary forces at work—and that it was the tension between these contradictory impulses that gave the period its unique and powerful dynamic. Dutch Culture in the Golden Age is distinctive in its broad scope, examing art, literature, religion, political ideology, theology, and scientific and intellectual trends, while also attending to the high and popular culture of the times. Price’s new interpretation of Dutch history places an emphasis on the paradox of the Dutch resistance to change as well as their general acceptance of innovation. This comprehensive look at the Dutch Golden Age provides a fascinating new way to understand Dutch culture at the height of its historic and global influence.
