As advanced domains such as robotic systems mature over the next ten years, the need for effective language interfaces will become more significant as the disparity between physical and language ability becomes more evident. Natural language conversation with robots and other situated systems will not only require a clear understanding of theories of language use, models of spatial representation and reasoning, and theories of intentional action and agency – but will also require that all of these models be made accessible within tractable dialogue processing frameworks. While such issues pose research questions which are significant, particularly when we consider them in the light of the many other challenges in language processing and spatial theory, the benefits of competence in situated dialogue to the fields of robotics, geographic information systems, game design, and applied artificial intelligence cannot be underestimated. This book examines the burgeoning field of Situated Dialogue Systems and describes for the first time a complete computational model of situated dialogue competence for practical dialogue systems. The book can be broadly broken down into two parts. The first three chapters examine on one hand the issues which complicate the computational modelling of situated dialogue, i.e., issues of agency and spatial language competence, and on the other hand examines theories of dialogue modelling and management with respect to the needs of the situated domain. The second part of the book then details a situated dialogue processing architecture. Novel features of this architecture include the modular integration of an intentionality model alongside an exchange-structure based organization of discourse, plus the use of a functional contextualization process that operates over both implicit and explicit content in user contributions. The architecture is described at a course level, but in sufficient detail for others to use as a starting point in their own explorations of situated language intelligence.

It is divided into the three parts Speech coding and Segmentation, Word Recognition, and Linguistic Processing. Although this can only be a rough organization showing some overlap, the editors felt that it most naturally represents the bottom-up strategy of speech understanding and, therefore, should be useful for the reader. Part 1, SPEECH CODING AND SEGMENTATION, contains 4 invited and 14 contributed papers. The first invited paper summarizes basic properties of speech signals, reviews coding schemes, and describes a particular solution which guarantees high speech quality at low data rates. The second and third invited papers are concerned with acoustic-phonetic decoding. Techniques to integrate knowledge sources into speech recognition systems are presented and demonstrated by experimental systems. The fourth invited paper gives an overview of approaches for using prosodic knowledge in automatic speech recogni tion systems, and a method for assigning a stress score to every syllable in an utterance of German speech is reported in a contributed paper. A set of contributed papers treats the problem of automatic segmentation, and several authors successfully apply knowledge-based methods for interpreting speech signals and spectrograms. The last three papers investigate phonetic models, Markov models and fuzzy quantization techniques and provide a transi tion to Part 2 .

Book excerpt: This book describes an extension of the user behaviour simulation (UBS) of an existing tool for automatic usability evaluation (AUE). This extension is based upon a user study with a smart home system. It uses technical-sociological methods for the execution of the study and the analysis of the collected data. A comparison of the resulting UBS with former UBSs, as well as the empirical data, shows that the new simulation approach outperforms the former simulation. The improvement affects the prediction of dialogue metrics that are related to dialogue efficiency and dialogue effectiveness. Furthermore, the book describes a parameter-based data model, as well as a related framework. Both are used to uniformly describe multimodal human-computer interactions and to provide such descriptions for usability evaluations. Finally, the book proposes a new two-stage method for the evaluation of UBSs. The method is based on the computation of a distance measures between two dialogue corpora and the pair-wise comparison of distances among several dialogue corpora.
