Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Constructive Philosophy This book was undertaken more than a quarter of a century ago, and I have had it pretty constantly in mind during the period that has elapsed; but difficulties of various kinds - perhaps not all to be regretted - have delayed its production. My primary object in writing it has been to clear up my own ideas on a number of fundamental problems. On many of them I still feel a good deal of uncertainty, but I can scarcely hope that that will ever be wholly removed; and it is possible that the attempt that has here been made may be of some service to others, especially to those who are more nearly at the beginning of their studies. I have tried to meet the needs of such students by giving a considerable number of references to other books and articles in which particular topics are more fully discussed. In the course of the work I have sought to take account of all the important contributions that have been made to the subject, from what ever quarter they might proceed; but it is probable that there may be some degree of arbitrariness in my selection both of the problems to be considered and of the writers who have dealt with them. Believing as I do that some of the most fundamental problems are of interest to many who are not specialists in philosophy, I have endeavoured to avoid technicalities, as far as possible, and to give a considerable number of simple illustrations; and I have not hesitated, especially in the more speculative parts of the work, to refer to writers who cannot, in any strict sense, be described as philosophers. If this is an offence against the dignity of the subject, I must crave the indulgence of the more purely, scientific reader. It will be observed that my treatment has been a good deal influenced by the writings of those who are commonly referred to as the New Realists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constructive Ethics: A Review of Modern Moral Philosophy in Its Three Stages of Interpretation, Criticism, and Reconstruction As I tried to explain in the preface to the first edition of this book, my object in writing these pages is to give my readers an Introduction to what I conceive to be the proper and final form of Moral Philosophy - a system of Constructive Ethics. It was necessary to my purpose to show that the history of Moral Philosophy itself invites a reconstruction on the lines of that particular theory of ethical data which I have called indifferently Rationalism or Idealism. To this system, so far as I can read the phenomena, the early interpretative systems, as well as the critical systems of a crude and disappointing Utilitarianism, appear to be preliminary. If I am right in supposing that the progress of thought is a gradual transition from an ambitious and. Premature attempt to decipher ethical facts through a period of criticism, to a reconstruction of morals on a metaphysical and indeed an ontological basis, then it would seem clear that the ethics of the future, whatever other features they may contain, need not be merely interpretative. Book excerpt: The book "Foundational Theories of Classical and Constructive Mathematics" is a book on the classical topic of foundations of mathematics. Its originality resides mainly in its treating at the same time foundations of classical and foundations of constructive mathematics. This confrontation of two kinds of foundations contributes to answering questions such as: Are foundations/foundational theories of classical mathematics of a different nature compared to those of constructive mathematics? Do they play the same role for the resp. mathematics? Are there connections between the two kinds of foundational theories? etc. The confrontation and comparison is often implicit and sometimes explicit. Its great advantage is to extend the traditional discussion of the foundations of mathematics and to render it at the same time more subtle and more differentiated. Another important aspect of the book is that some of its contributions are of a more philosophical, others of a more technical nature. This double face is emphasized, since foundations of mathematics is an eminent topic in the philosophy of mathematics: hence both sides of this discipline ought to be and are being paid due to.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding To this reprint of Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding has been added a supplement containing se lections from his earlier and longer philosophical work, the Treatise on Human Understanding, referred to in the Author's Advertisement to 'the Enquiry (page xxvm., this edition). In spite of Hume's deprecatory reference to the Treatise, it remains the completest expression of his philosophical doctrine. The selected portions of the Treatise comprise (i) certain sections on causality which amplify the causal doctrine of the Enquiry and may profit ably be read after Section VII. Of the latter work; and (2) those sections which embody the essential features of Hume's constructive philosophy, his conception of matter and of self of spirit. Nothing in the Enquiry, with the exception of a few paragraphs of Section XII., corresponds to these sections of the Treatise. They should be read before or in place of, the comparatively irrelevant sections, IX-XI., of the Enquiry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth and Coherence We construct our world as an interpretation which attempts to restore the unity, which the real has lost by our making its diversity explicit. This construction is our intellectual world. It is a form of reality, possessing some of its characters, and there are other forms, higher and lower. But none of them can be a world external to our thought and yet acting as its standard. The thing is a contradiction in terms, not because of the metaphor of externality, but because of the vital autonomy of the thought-system. If we ask, how we know our interpretation to be true or false, to possess or not to possess the character of reality, so far as its discursive form allows, the answer comes from the principle of non contradiction, which is only another form of words for the principle that the Truth is the whole. This could easily be shown at length.1 The important point is that the principle of non-contradiction is positive and constructive; its force cannot be evaded by a logical quietism, by saying nothing. For you cannot get away from the world. If you try to say nothing you are in contradiction with a mass of experience, not with a presumed external world, but with what enters into your own being; and you further leave it in contradiction with itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over sixty cases as support, this text presents the philosophy of law as a perpetual series of debates with overlapping lines and cross connections. Using law as a focus to bring into relief many social and political issues of pressing importance in contemporary society, this book encourages readers to think critically and philosophically. Classic Readings and Cases in the Philosophy of Law centers on five major questions: What is law? What, if any, connection must there be between law and morality? When should law be used to restrict the liberty of individuals? To what extent should democratic states permit civil disobedience? What, if anything, justifies the infliction of punishment on those who violate the law? The extensive anthology of cases covers the mundane to the grandest of constitutional issues, including controversial topics like ownership of genetic material, capital punishment, and gay rights. Brief introductions to each case describe the central issue being litigated, the legal reasoning of the justices–both majority and dissenting–the decision of the court, and its philosophical significance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Method: Its Philosophy and Its Practice In our larger national affairs also, there are hopeful signs of a more rational treatment, but there is a great need for the develop ment of the scientific study and impartial examination of all the complex factors, economic, social, political, and racial, involved in controversial problems which are sources of international friction. It is primarily from science that society must learn the scientific principles and methods of unravelling such problems and of reducing them to their elements; and the responsibility for constructive thought is one from which scientific workers cannot escape. Book excerpt: This volume traces the roots of the constructivist turn in the distinct (and competing) traditions of Continental and Anglo-American Western political thought. Divided into three thematic parts, these 13 newly commissioned essays develop the constructivist turn as a central concept. They advance the insight that there can be no democratic politics without representation; constituencies or groups exist as agents of democratic politics only insofar as they are represented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metaphysic of Mr. F. H. Bradley I hope the present moment will not be an unfavourable one for attempting an impartial examination of Mr. Bradley's metaphysical position. As this paper will be chiefly critical, I should like to begin by saying that I am one of those who do place Mr. Bradley among the classics of Philosophy. When Appearance and Reality came out, Dr. Edward Caird said that it was the greatest thing since Kant. I should like respectfully to subscribe that dictum at least in the form 'there has been nothing greater since Kant'. It is not likely, indeed, that Mr. Bradley's actual reputation will ever place him quite in this position. The greatest and most enduring philosophical reputations will always be those of men who have not merely offered a new solution of the technical problems of Philosophy but have expounded some new and characteristic attitude towards life. Mr. Bradley - apart from a few obiter dicta which in all spheres except the religious are for the most part of an extremely conservative cast - has touched little on practical questions. Perhaps therefore his writings will never become quite as classical as they deserve to be. But just because I regard Mr. Bradley as a classic, I shall venture to handle him with the freedom which we all employ towards the great names of Philosophy. One is almost tempted to say that the greatest thinkers are just those who have made the greatest mistakes. We are all agreed that there are huge inconsistencies in Kant: much the same thing is beginning at least to be whispered about Hegel; and yet we do not cease to regard Kant or even Hegel as great men. I trust therefore that, if I venture to point out similar inconsistencies in Mr. Bradley, I shall not be supposed to be wanting in respectful admiration for his work. I need not say that it is only in the most inadequate way that in such a paper as this I can attempt an examination even of one or two central points in his elaborate construction - if the word can be applied to a system which is so much more destructive than constructive. A full examination of Appearance and Reality would demand a work at least as long. If criticism must be brief, exposition must be briefer. And yet, even before an audience whose adequate acquaintance with the book may be pre-supposed, I can hardly begin to criticize without some slight attempt to state the positions I am attacking - if only for the purpose of indicating incidentally what are the elements of Mr. Bradley's thought which I regard as constituting his real philosophical importance.
