Book Synopsis Léon Walras: Elements of Theoretical Economics by : Léon Walras
Download or read book Léon Walras: Elements of Theoretical Economics written by Léon Walras and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his fourth edition of Éléménts d'économie politique pure (1900), León Walras introduced the device of written pledges to eliminate path dependency: sellers of products and services write out commitments to supply certain quantities at suggested prices with no commodities actually produced and supplied until a set of prices is found at which supply and demand are equal simultaneously in every market. This brought about very serious alterations to the character of the book. Unfortunately, these changes resulted in an incomplete, internally contradictory, and occasionally incoherent text. This translation, therefore, by two leading scholars of León Walras' work, Donald A. Walker and Jan van Daal, revisits the third edition of this seminal work, including Walras' brilliant explanation of his comprehensive model, with all its richness derived from reality. Growing research into Walras' work indicates that it was this third edition that contained his best theoretical research and a translation of this edition of the book is now a necessity.

Download or read book Beyond Transition written by Ben Slay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-communist Central European and Baltic economies are now approaching the end of their transitions to well-functioning market systems. In some respects, the approaching EU accession and conclusion of the transition marks the end of a fascinating period in economic history. Beyond Transition focuses on the economic problems and issues facing Central Europe and the Baltics, the Balkans, and countries belonging to the Commonwealth for Independent States (CIS) in the post-transition context. This focus reflects the need to better understand two processes that are increasingly apparent in the post-communist economic space. First, many of the problems now facing policy makers in post-communist economies - choice of exchange rate regime, tax reform, labour market regulation, improving corporate governance - also face policy makers in developed and developing countries in other parts of the world. Second, the EU's eastern enlargement and the policy agendas facing the first wave accession candidates have major implications for the CIS and Balkan countries that have not been (and may never be) invited to join this process.

Book Synopsis Studies in Applied Economics by : Léon Walras
Download or read book Studies in Applied Economics written by Léon Walras and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Studies in Applied Economics is an English translation of Études d’économie politique appliquée (1898) by Léon Walras (1834–1910). Until now, Éléments d’économie politique pure (1874) was the only book by Walras available in English (Elements of Pure Economics, 1954). It contains the theory of general economic equilibrium under free competition, with the concept of utility maximization as its core. Walras’s conclusion was that where free competition is possible, it should be the rule. So, in the present book, he advocates protective regulation, within which economic agents may compete freely. For water, gas or railway transport, for instance, where free competition is impossible, rules are formulated to maintain its advantages. Issues such as money, capital, credit, banking and the stock markets are also dealt with. The book’s final chapter recapitulates the themes of Walras’s three main works: Éléments, Études d’économie sociale and this volume, Études d’économie politique appliquée. Walras’s aim was to provide an economic blueprint for a social ideal where poverty and similar evils could be banished.

Book Synopsis The Evolutionist Economics of Leon Walras by : Albert Jolink
Download or read book The Evolutionist Economics of Leon Walras written by Albert Jolink and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a new perspective of Walras' pure, applied and social economics. Through archival research at the University of Lausanne, Jolink considers Walras' ideas on philosophy and philosophy of science based on a newly constructed taxonomy. Walras' work is placed in a broader context by stressing the nineteenth century cultural and historical background in which he lived. This further gives an insight into the relationship between the romanticism of the early nineteenth century and logical positivism of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Value and Prices in Russian Economic Thought by : François Allisson
Download or read book Value and Prices in Russian Economic Thought written by François Allisson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Russian synthesis that occurred in Russian economic thought between 1890 and 1920. This includes all the attempts at synthesis between classical political economy and marginalism; the labour theory of value and marginal utility; and value and prices. The various ways in which Russian economists have approached these issues have generally been addressed in a piecemeal fashion in history of economic thought literature. This book returns to the primary sources in the Russian language, translating many into English for the first time, and offers the first comprehensive history of the Russian synthesis. The book first examines the origins of the Russian synthesis by determining the condition of reception in Russia of the various theories of value involved: the classical theories of value of Ricardo and Marx on one side; the marginalist theories of prices of Menger, Walras and Jevons on the other. It then reconstructs the three generations of the Russian synthesis: the first (Tugan-Baranovsky), the second, the mathematicians (Dmitriev, Bortkiewicz, Shaposhnikov, Slutsky, etc.) and the last (Yurovsky), with an emphasis on Tugan-Baranovsky’s initial impetus. This volume is suitable for those studying economic theory and philosophy as well as those interested in the history of economic thought.
