Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Woodworking In order to obtain good results in the using of tools it is necessary to know their construction, how to pr0p erly sharpen and adjust them, and the correct method of handling them. It is also essential to know how to lay out and work the material or stock. Carelessness or a lack of knowledge is invariably followed by a failure. It is more important at first to work carefully and accurately than rapidly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Woodwork for Use in Manual Training Classes As each tool is taken up, the pupil should turn to part III and study carefully what is said about that particular tool; and each day, until the lessons are mastered, review what is said in regard to the use of the tools in the lessons and also the description of the tools in part III. Each new lesson depends very largely upon those' preceding. Therefore, only by a constant review will the pupil get the greatest possible benefit from his study. Although the directions are quite explicit, an abun dance of Opportunity is left for individuality in work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Cabinetwork: For Manual Training Classes The aim of this work is to make clear, through definite directions for making the articles illustrated, the general principles of furniture construction, so that the pupil may apply them in making other articles from designs found in trade journals and elsewhere. Although this book is the result of a teachers experience in manual-training schools, yet it will also be helpful for self-instruction in the home shop. Knowledge of the correct use of ordinary woodworking bench tools must be gained before any attempt is made in the construction of furniture. Such knowledge is imparted in the author's earlier volume, "Elementary Woodwork." Elementary Cabinetwork is not to be used merely as a reference book at the instructors desk, but is designed as an aid to study and is to be placed in the hands of each student. The instructor should see that the projects to be made by each pupil are of such a type as will demand a systematic study of the text. Though designing and cabinetmaking are different subjects, yet the peculiar arrangement of the text, the variety of designs presented, and the suggestions for new forms and combinations will be found to teach, in the most effective way, the elements of furniture designing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Sloyd and Whittling: With Drawings and Working Directions Sloyd is tool work so arranged and employed as to stimulate and promote vigorous, intelligent self-activity for a purpose which the worker recognizes as good. By "Elementary Sloyd" is meant bench work in wood, in two dimensions adapted to children from eight to twelve years of age. In 1889 I published a series of working drawings for Preliminary Sloyd with a teachers "Sloyd Manual of Working Directions." The changes and improvements made since that time are the results gained from the experience of many teachers, and are embodied in the course here outlined. It is thought by some that children under twelve years of age have not the requisite strength and maturity to handle ordinary wood-working tools, but, owing to the recognized necessity of providing for the vigorous muscular activity of younger children, this course is suggested. I have endeavored to select larger objects than those commonly given children at this age, so that they may obtain more physical exercise, and, although a good finish should be insisted upon, less accuracy is required. The objects are chosen with special reference to the interests of a. child at this age, and are different from those which have been suggested for the three upper grammar grades. This course may include toys and games which appeal to young children. Many of the objects in this course have been evolved after a careful study of a large variety of children's original work in wood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Projects for the Elementary Schools: Sample Materials for Grades Four, Five and Six This bulletin is similar in plan and purpose to State College Publication, Second Series, No. 4, which includes sample projects for the kindergarten, the first, second and third grades. The present issue offers a series of materials for grades four, five and six. These projects have been developed in our Extension Courses in the Project Method of Instruction. Each teacher pursuing the course has been required to plan a project and, with the permission of her supervisors, work it out in her classroom. A full report of the undertaking of such scope as to be helpful to other teachers of the subject or grade has been rendered in each case. We are convinced that one method for bringing about intelligent progress in education consists in making available to teachers generally samples of the best work done in the public schools in the form of carefully prepared outlines and bibliographies, suggested sources of materials, standards of achievement, sample projects, and the like. We feel that the projects which follow do represent some of the best work now being attempted in the New Jersey schools. We desire to express our thanks to the county superintendents, city superintendents, principals, and presidents of teachers' organizations who have co-operated in the organization of our Extension Courses, and who by their untiring efforts have contributed so much to making them a success. Book excerpt: "..."The Stick Chair Book" is divided into three sections. The first section, "Thinking About Chairs," introduces you to the world of common stick chairs, plus the tools and wood to build them. The second section - "Chairmaking Techniques" - covers every process involved in making a chair, from cutting stout legs, to making curved arms with straight wood, to carving the seat. Plus, you'll get a taste for the wide variety of shapes you can use. The chapter on seats shows you how to lay out 14 different seat shapes. The chapter on legs has 16 common forms that can be made with only a couple handplanes. Add those to the 11 different arm shapes, six arm-joinery options, 14 shapes for hands, seven stretcher shapes and 11 combs, and you could make stick chairs your entire life without ever making the same one twice. The final section offers detailed plans for five stick chairs, from a basic Irish armchair to a dramatic Scottish comb-back. These five chair designs are a great jumping-off point for making stick chairs of your own design. Additional chapters in the book cover chair comfort, finishing and sharpening the tools. From the author: "When I first wrote 'The Stick Chair Book' in 2021, I was also fighting cancer. So I hammered out the text with urgency and the desire to record every fragment of information I knew about chairmaking. "To be fair, that's usually how I go about writing all my books. But then I typically take a couple months off, put the manuscript aside, then revisit it with fresh eyes and a sharpened pen. My final revisions remove about 10-20 percent of the original material. The stuff I cut is usually chapters that don't match the tone of the rest of the text. Or I snip sections that aren't as relevant as when I first wrote them. I also smooth out the writing and add bits of information I'd forgotten during the first brain-to-fingers dump. "And that's exactly what I've done for this revised edition. As a result, the text is 10.1 percent shorter than the first edition. It's more to the point. And it's where the manuscript would have ended up under normal conditions..."--Publisher's website.
