Book excerpt: Albert Einstein characterized the work of James Clerk Maxwell as the "most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." Max Planck went even further, declaring that "he achieved greatness unequalled," and Richard Feynman asserted that "From a long view of the history of mankind — seen from, say, ten thousand years from now — there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the nineteenth century will be judged as Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electrodynamics." Maxwell made numerous other contributions to the advancement of science, but the greatest work of his life was devoted to electricity. An Elementary Treatise on Electricity appeared at a time when very few books on electrical measurements were available to students, and its compact treatment not only elucidates the theory of electricity but also serves to develop electrical ideas in readers' minds. The author describes experiments that demonstrate the principal facts relating an electric charge as a quantity capable of being measured, deductions from these facts, and the exhibition of electrical phenomena. This volume, published posthumously from Maxwell's lecture notes at the Cavendish Laboratory — which he founded at the University of Cambridge — is supplemented by a selection of articles from his landmark book, Electricity and Magnetism. A classic of science, this volume is an eminently suitable text for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

This book was released on 2018-10-21 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism These Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism are in tended to afford to beginners a clear and accurate knowledge of the experiments upon which the Sciences of Electricity and Magnetism are based, and of the exact laws which have been thereby discovered. The difficulties which beginners find in studying many modern text-books arise partly from the very wide range of the subject, and partly from want of famili arity with the simple fundamental experiments. We have, at the outset, three distinct sets of phenomena to observe, viz. - those of Frictional Electricity, of Current Electricity, and of Magnetism; and yet it is impossible to study any one of these rightly without knowing something of them all. Accordingly, the first three Chapters of this work are devoted to a simple exposition of the prominent experimental facts of these three branches of the subject, reserving until the later Chapters the points of connection between them, and such parts of electrical theory as are admissible in a strictly elementary work. N o knowledge of algebra beyond simple equations, or of geometry beyond the first book of Euclid, is assumed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 In describing the phenomena, I shall select those which most clearly illustrate the fundamental ideas of the theory, omitting others, or reserving them till the reader is more advanced. The most important aspect of any phenomenon from a mathematical point of view is that of a measurable quantity. I shall therefore consider electrical pheno mena chiefly with a view to their measurement, de scribing the methods of measurement, and defining the standards on which they depend. In the application of mathematics to the calculation of electrical quantities, I shall endeavour in the first place to deduce the most general conclusions from the data at our disposal, and in the next place to apply the results to the simplest cases that can be chosen. I shall avoid, as much as I can, those questions which, though they have elicited the skill of mathematicians, have not enlarged our knowledge of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Natural Philosophy, Vol. 3 of 4: Electricity and Magnetism The elements of the theory of magnetism have been based on Sir Wm. Thomson's papers in the Philosophical Transactions; and the description of the apparatus used in magnetic observatories has been drawn from the recently published work of the Astronomer Royal. The account of electrical units given in the Appendix is mainly founded on the Report of the Electrical Committee of 'the British Association for the year 1863. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity and Magnetism: An Elementary d104-Book, Theoretical and Practical When I ceased to deliver the first year course I was asked to print my lectures for the use, primarily, of the Students attending the practical classes; the lectures on Mechanics, Heat and Light have been in type for some years. Other claims on my time have prevented the issue of the present volume until now, when it appears in response to the promise made several years ago. Meanwhile the subject has changed; but while this is the case the elementary laws and measurements on which the science is based remain unaltered, and I trust the book may he found of service to others besides my successors at the Cavendish Laboratory. As in the other books of the Series, I have again to thank Mr Fitzpatrick for his very valuable assistance. He has read all the proofs and suggested numerous improvements, and has thus brought the book up to date as representing a course which many years' experience has proved to be a useful one for elementary students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Recent Researches in Electricity and Magnetism, Intended as a Sequel: To Professor Clerk-Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism IN the twenty years which have elapsed since the first appearance of Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism great progress has been made in these sciences. This progress has been largely - perhaps it would not be too much to say mainly - due to the influence of the views set forth in that Treatise, to the value of which it offers convincing testimony. In the following work I have endeavoured to give an account of some recent electrical researches, experimental as well as theoretical, in the hope that it may assist students to gain some acquaintance with the recent progress of Electricity and yet retain Maxwell's Treatise as the source from which they learn the great principles of the science. I have adopted exclusively Maxwell's theory, and have not attempted to discuss the con sequences which would follow from any other view of electrical action. I have assumed throughout the equations of the Electro magnetic Field given by Maxwell in the ninth chapter of the second volume of his Treatise. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Magnetism and Electricity, Vol. 1 of 2 As to the mode of treatment I have adopted, a few words are necessary. The book is not a treatise on the mathematical theory of electricity merely, but is, I hope, to some extent successful in bringing the theory and practice together. Thus while in general assuming some elementary acquaintance on the part of the reader with electrical phenomena and their laws, I have endeavoured first to look at the phenomena as they present themselves, and then to show how they fall into their places in the general scheme of electrical action, and to point out the consequences to which they lead. As stated in the words of Bacon I have placed on the title-page, it is a double process by which natural philosophy advances; we ascend from experiments to causes, and descend from causes to experiments, and it is most requisite that these two parts be severally considered and handled.
