The teacher in preparing a course of instruction must he governed largely by the material procurable. Work in marine biology can never be properly conducted away from the seashore, nor tropical life thoroughly presented in the temperate zone. In the study of animal life, insects present a fertile field. They outnumber all other forms, and are ever accessible. Under observation in their native haunts, or, in many cases, surrounded by artificial conditions, they conduct themselves naturally. The study of insects has therefore come to form a prominent part of zoological instruction. This book on insect life is divided into two parts. Part I deals with the development of insects and their relations to their surroundings. Part II is devoted to Methods, Equipment, and Laboratory Exercises. The laboratory exercises consist of elementary work in the development, structure, function, and systematic arrangement of insects. The two parts are intended to be taken together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Entomology To-day the public has come to appreciate that insect life plays a most-important part in the economy of our civilization. Some of the problems which require the work of the trained entomologist are worthy of the highest scientific training and best executive ability. Insects and disease. The modern methods of sanitation for the control of malarial fever and yellow fever involve the control of mosquitoes, which transmit these diseases. More and more the sanitary measures which are making the tropics habitable for the more northern races of man are being made possible by a knowl edge of the relation of insect life to the transmission of disease. Even the common house-fly, formerly considered a mere nuisance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore Having from time to time written articles on insect life for journals and lectured upon the lives and habits of various small creatures, I have been struck with the great interest shown by the public, and this despite the very large number of books already published upon Such subjects. To A recent investigation among the shelves a. Of one of our largest libraries. Has opened my eyes as to the reason of so much rm ignorance existing, with such a mass of Q knowledge obtainable It is that so many 3 entomological experts use terms which Z are totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated, while, on the other hand, some of the most pleasing little books upon the subject are written for children, in childish language, or mixed up with a mass of information upon trees, flowers, shrubs, etc., etc. I am venturing in these brief pages to place in the hands of farmers, gardeners and others interested, a few. Book excerpt: An Elementary Study of Insects by Leonard Haseman In the preparation of a book of this nature, to be used in the grade schools, we realize that the one fundamental thing to keep in mind is the economic importance of the insect, be it good or bad. The child wants to know what is good and what is bad and how he can make use of the good and how he can get rid of the bad. And yet there is something more associated with the life, work and development of each tiny insect. There is a story-a story of growth, not unlike that of the developing child, a story of courage, strife and ultimate success or failure, which is as interesting and of greater value to the child than many of the stories of adventure and of historical facts. Snatches of these stories will appear in the following chapters along with the studies on insects and their economic importance. In the development of our grade school system, especially in the rural districts, there is a growing demand for some practical work along with the regular cultural studies. To the child in the rural schools, practical knowledge naturally tends toward agriculture. Many of these boys and girls do not have a chance to pursue studies beyond the grades and it therefore becomes necessary to introduce some elementary agriculture into the grades to supply the natural craving of this vast assemblage of children in the rural schools of our land. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary d104-Book of Entomology Now that entomology is attracting so much interest among all classes, and has become such a favourite pursuit, it appeared to the author of the present work that there was room for a book of moderate size, in which the most typical and remarkable insects of all orders, and from all parts of the world, should be popularly described and figured. Previous works on entomology have generally treated only of a single order of insects, or else of British insects. This d104-Book is chiefly intended as a compressed popular Introduction to the classification of insects in general, and by the careful omission of all technicalities not absolutely necessary for this object, sufficient space has been gained to give a short and readable, though necessarily somewhat condensed, account of all the principal families of insects, interspersed with occasional observations on their habits and economic importance, preference being given to those which have not previously appeared in English popular works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Insect Life: Second Series Summer and Autumn IN studying insects it is very desirable to be able to keep them under observation from day to day. For this purpose various sorts of breeding cages are commonly employed. A breeding cage is simply a closed vessel in which a caterpillar or other insect may be kept alive and fed, so that it will go through the cycle of its changes where it can be seen. A Simple form of such a cage consists of a lantern globe or lamp chimney resting upon a wide, Shallow dish, in which sand or earth to a depth of two or three inches has been placed. When it is to be used for large caterpillars a small glass vial nearly full of water is set down in the sand in the middle of the space, with the top of the vial projecting somewhat above the surface. In this vial a leaf or branch of the food plant is placed. The cage is now ready for the caterpillar, which will find its food kept fresh for two or three days by the water in the vial. Then a new leaf or branch may be exchanged for the old one. The open top of the lamp chimney is to be kept covered with a small piece of mosquito netting, held'in place by a rubber band. For the lower dish a flowerpot or a flower pot saucer serves the purpose very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits In the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Ray Lankester, Professor E .B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. I desire to offer my thanks to Mr. Oswald H. Latter, of Charterhouse, for his kindness in reading and criticising the proofs of this book. My thanks are also due to my friend, Mr. Sidney J. Miller, who prepared for me the drawings and diagrams which are reproduced on Plates VII, VIII, IX, XI, and XII.
