Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Science in the Elementary School The part that science plays in modern life is so vital that science teaching must inevitably have an important place in the school curriculum. There has been some confusion regarding the term to be used to cover the work in science in the elementary school Nature-study' has been the word in most common usage. But there is considerable misunderstanding as to what is included under this term. In recent years it has been used in an ever-broadening sense till now the word is used by many educators to include all phases of science adapted to the elementary school. But among people in general the common notion still prevails that nature-study includes only the study of Wild plants and animals. So that, considering all sides of the matter, it has seemed better to the author to adopt the word science instead of nature-study, as tending to involve less mis understanding and as helping to establish an appropriate and standard term. It should reveal to them opportunities of applying their newly acquired knowledge. In order that the interest of the pupils may be held the material should cover as wide a range as possible. Because of this breadth of range, economy of time becomes important. A suitable text book aids materially in presenting the course in a minimum of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Things and Elementary Science in the Form of Object Lessons The object of the author in publishing this volume is to supply teachers with a manual of matter and method on Common Things and the Elements of Science, thus providing materials for courses of lessons on Elementary Science as a class subject. Three points have been kept in view in pre paring the lessons; first, the production of full and accurate information; second, the arrangement of the matter in its teaching order; and third, the indication of the method by which the ideas are to be worked out. In many cases the particular experiments to be performed, the questions to be put, and the diagrams to be used are given. It has, of course, been necessary to make a selection of subjects in each section of the book, preference, therefore, has been given to those which are likely to come under a child's notice in his daily life, the study of which will help to cultivate careful observation and intelligent inquiry; habits which will tend to make the individual exact in his statements, correct in his judgments, and useful in his future avocations. The subjects chosen embrace all those mentioned in the Code. All the lessons have been worked out from original sources; those on manufactures and minerals, from notes made while visiting factories and mines. The statistics have been taken from the latest official returns. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Household Science and Arts for Elementary Schools All directions within these covers are expressed in simple language. This fact makes the book easily understood by young students, and saves time and thought for young housekeepers. In the outline of preliminary lessons, teachers may find a suggested order of making girls acquainted with the kitchen and its equipment. This acquaintance should be made very informally, with no attempt to cover in the first lesson more than the general and familiar kitchen furnishings and tools and their place and order. The individual cooking utensils, unfamiliar in name and use, should be taken up just before need of each is felt, so as to avoid confusion of mind arising from trying to learn many new things at once. Many things about us are so familiar we do not appreciate their great importance until we experiment with them and begin to understand the scientific laws back of them. Labels.-whenever possible, it is helpful to make a simple drawing or Sketch to accompany and explain experiments and demonstrations. Such a drawing should have a Clear, definite title which explains just what it represents. Usually it is ad visable to label all important parts. That is, the name of the part should be lettered on the drawing, or else the lettering should be placed in the margin and a line drawn to connect it with the part to which it refers. All samples of material should also be labeled. That is, the material itself or its container should have attached a simple paper label stating exactly what the material is. Labeling of this char acter is helpful in using or classifying samples later, and is of importance in avoiding mistakes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Modern Chemistry The beginner in the study of chemistry finds interest and pleasure, first of all, in the remarkable new facts which are placed before him, and this is both natural and desirable. N 0 one can master the science without much study of proper ties and reactions, and minute acquaintance with as many phenomena as possible is a fundamental requisite. Modern chemistry has, however, a number of general laws which appear. Everywhere through it, connecting various facts in the most interesting way. Before study has gone very far it becomes necessary to begin the statement of these laws and to indicate how the facts already learned group them selves about them. Two purposes are served by this method of presentation. First, a real science of chemistry begins to unfold itself to the student, and second, the acquisition of more new facts is made easier and more interesting. We have planned in this book to present a sufficient number of facts and experiments to fill the time usually devoted to a first course, and at the same time we have endeavored to fit these facts, as far as possible, to the Simpler of the general laws now firmly established as the basis of the science of chemistry.
