Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Inorganic Chemistry, Descriptive and Qualitative This elementary treatise is based upon plans and methods which have been employed in the author's laboratory throughout a series of years, and no work has been incorporated in the text or in the exercises that has not there been proven practicable. A love for the science of chemistry would have for bidden any attempt to add another text-book to the already too extended list of Elementary Chemistries had not the hearty commendations of teachers of national reputation and undoubted ability encouraged both the author and the publisher to put this work in permanent form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry: A Textbook for Schools This book is written by one who has realised this, and who knows how to teach with breadth and without exclusiveness. Its pages give information and provoke curiosity at many points they suggest that there are other realms of knowledge Of a quite different sort. This characteristic, which may offend the purist, seems to me all to the good, and I hope that the work may find its way into the hands of many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry: Inorganic and Organic This small work on qualitative analysis is intended to supply a text-book for students working according to the syllabus of the elementary stage of Practical Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. The substances for which tests are given are those contained in the new syllabus (1894), but it is hoped that the methods given for their detection and separation are such that the student will have nothing to unlearn when he proceeds to a more advanced course of qualitative analysis. Directions are given in the making up of reagents for students who are working without the aid of a teacher. Objection may be taken by some to the way in which it is recommended that results should be stated, but the authors find after several years practical experience in laboratory teaching, that this method leads to clearness of expression, and the rapid examination of a student's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Modern Chemistry The beginner in the study of chemistry finds interest and pleasure, first of all, in the remarkable new facts which are placed before him, and this is both natural and desirable. N 0 one can master the science without much study of proper ties and reactions, and minute acquaintance with as many phenomena as possible is a fundamental requisite. Modern chemistry has, however, a number of general laws which appear. Everywhere through it, connecting various facts in the most interesting way. Before study has gone very far it becomes necessary to begin the statement of these laws and to indicate how the facts already learned group them selves about them. Two purposes are served by this method of presentation. First, a real science of chemistry begins to unfold itself to the student, and second, the acquisition of more new facts is made easier and more interesting. We have planned in this book to present a sufficient number of facts and experiments to fill the time usually devoted to a first course, and at the same time we have endeavored to fit these facts, as far as possible, to the Simpler of the general laws now firmly established as the basis of the science of chemistry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry It follows from the above statement that the theoretical part of the subject is distributed throughout the book. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inorganic Chemistry This method of development has necessarily resulted in defer ring the study of the Ionic Theory until the student has mastered the fundamental laws of the science. In itself this is no dis advantage because the student passes straight from the study of the ionic theory to the chemistry of the metals, where the theory may be most usefully applied. For the ideas concerning oxidation which have been developed in Chapter XI, the author is indebted to Professor B. D. Steele, D.so., who has found this method of dealing with the subject of great help to the student when considering the reactions and properties of the halogens.
