The first may be obtained to a greater or less degree from the study of any science by the experimental method; the latter however may often be only imperfectly acquired even by those who are able to make accurate observations, but who fail to draw the correct or logical conclusions. It is the aim of this book to aid the student in accomplishing both these things. The author has found by experience (as, indeed, what teacher has not?) that all beginners in the study of chemistry are by no means natural adepts at making the necessary observations, but that by a sufficiently prolonged course of experiments their powers in this direction are easily augmented. The difficulty comes, however, in enabling the student, after the observations have been made to form the correct conclusions, and, finally, when both these things have been done throughout the subject, to round it off into a symmetrical whole. A Student's Guide, printed for the use of my classes in 1878, contained a course introductory to qualitative analysis, giving the student nothing but an outline of experiments. He was expected to make the experiments, to observe and describe his own results, and from these to construct for himself a plan for the detection of the metals. I now combine the leading ideas of those two books, and offer to my fellow-teachers a new volume, in which they are more fully developed in ways suggested by the unbroken experience of the intervening years. Chemistry as a branch of study in the schools has two great merits happily combined. One is to be found in the kind of knowledge it offers, and the other in the peculiar mental training it affords. The lengths of the laboratory periods assigned to chemistry are so different in different institutions, varying from 45 minutes to 90 minutes and even more, that exercises arranged for any one length of period would still be a misfit in the majority of cases. To make adjustment easy, the exercises have been subdivided, so that where the whole exercise would occupy more than 45 minutes, certain parts may be omitted or assigned to the next period. A choice is required, so that the interests of the instructor, the sex of the pupils, and other factors may receive consideration.
