Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on 'Elementary Excitations in Solids, Molecules, and Atoms' was held at the University of Antwerp (U.I.A.) from June 18th till June 30th 1973. The In stitute was sponsored by NATO. Co-sponsors were: Agfa-Gevaert N.V. (Mortsel-Belgium), Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. (Antwerp-Belgium), I.B.M. BelgiumN. V. (Brussels-Belgium), the National Science Founda tion (Washington D.C. - U.S .A.) and the Uni versi ty of Antwerp (U.I .A.) . A total of 120 lecturers and participants attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the description of the elementary excitations of the elec tronic and vibrational systems and their interactions. Parallel with this, the experimentalists have obtained outstanding re sults, partly as a result of availability of coherent light sour ces from the far infrared through the visible region, and partly because of the availability of synchrotron radiation sources in the soft X-ray region. The results of today will lead to fur ther progress over the next years. It was the purpose of this NATO Advanced Study Institute to present a state of the art, namely a survey of experiment and theory.

Book excerpt: This book presents an ac count of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Collective Excitations in Solids," held in Erice, Italy, from June 15 to June 29, 1981. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the Institute was to formulate a unified and coherent treatment of various collective excitation processes by drawing on the current advances in various branches of the physics of the solid state. A total of 74 participants came from 54 laboratories and 20 nations (Australia, Belgium, Burma, Canada, China, France, F. R. Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, Turkey, The Uni ted Kingdom, and The United States). The secretaries of the course were: Joseph Danko for the scientific aspects and Nino La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting. Fourty-four lectures divided in eleven series were given. Nine "long" seminars and eight "short" seminars were also presented. In addition, two round-table discussions were held.
Book Synopsis Radiation-Chemical Processes in Solid Phase by : Evginiy I. Grigoriev
Download or read book Radiation-Chemical Processes in Solid Phase written by Evginiy I. Grigoriev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many other references, Radiation-Chemical Processes in Solid Phase analyzes experimental data on radiolysis in terms of solid-state physics. It traces the effect exerted by media from primary processes of radiation-substance interaction to final products. The authors consider the main chemically active elementary excitations arising under irradiation of solids and discuss the mechanisms of chemical reactions induced by them. They present the general principles of solid-state and molecular physics, and cover numerous radiation-chemical processes.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Solid-State Theory by : Otfried Madelung
Download or read book Introduction to Solid-State Theory written by Otfried Madelung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Solid-State Theory is a textbook for graduate students of physics and materials science. It also provides the theoretical background needed by physicists doing research in pure solid-state physics and its applications to electrical engineering. The fundamentals of solid-state theory are based on a description by delocalized and localized states and - within the concept of delocalized states - by elementary excitations. The development of solid-state theory within the last ten years has shown that by a systematic introduction of these concepts, large parts of the theory can be described in a unified way. This form of description gives a "pictorial" formulation of many elementary processes in solids, which facilitates their understanding.
Book Synopsis Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals by : Jean-Marie André
Download or read book Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals written by Jean-Marie André and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure of Polymers and Molecular Crystals" was held at the Facultes Universi taires de Namur (F.U.N.) from September 1st till September 14th, 1974. We wish to express our appreciation to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division whose generous support made this Institute possible and to the Facultes Universitaires de Namur and the Societe Chimique de Belgique which provided fellowships and travel grants to a number of students. This volume contains the main lectures about the basic principles of the field and about different recent developments of the theory of the electronic structure of polymers and molecular crystals. The school started with the presentation of the basic SCF-LCAO theory of the electronic structure of periodic polymers and molecular crystals (contributions by Ladik, Andre & Delhalle) showing how a combination of quantum chemical and solid state physical methods can provide band structures for these systems. The numerical aspects of these calculations were also discussed. Lectures by Mahan have shown how optical properties of molecular crystals can be interpreted on the basis of the exciton theory. Little has reviewed the present status of the hypothesis about excitonic superconductivity and the different approaches to synthesize a superconductive polymer. McCubbin in his first series of lectures has given a very precise group theoretical treatment of the symmetry properties of polymers. Atkins' lectures have covered both the theoretical aspects of X-ray structure determination and its application to different polymers.

Book Synopsis Surface and Defect Properties of Solids by : Meirion Wyn Roberts
Download or read book Surface and Defect Properties of Solids written by Meirion Wyn Roberts and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Synopsis Electron Spectroscopy for Surface Analysis by : H. Ibach
Download or read book Electron Spectroscopy for Surface Analysis written by H. Ibach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of surface physics and surface chemistry as a science is closely related to the technical development of a number of methods involving electrons either as an excitation source or as an emitted particle carrying characteristic information. Many of these various kinds of electron spectroscopies have become commercially available and have made their way into industrial laboratories. Others are still in an early stage, but may become of increasing importance in the future. In this book an assessment of the various merits and possible drawbacks of the most frequently used electron spectroscopies is attempted. Emphasis is put on prac tical examples and experimental design rather than on theoretical considerations. The book addresses itself to the reader who wishes to know which electron spectroscopy or which combination of different electron spectroscopies he may choose for the particular problems under investigation. After a brief introduction the practical design of electron spectrometers and their figures of merit important for the different applications are discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 deals with electron excited electron spectroscopies which are used for the elemental analysis of surfaces. Structure analysis by electron diffrac tion is described in Chapter 4 with special emphasis on the use of electron diffrac tion for the investigation of surface imperfections. For the application of electron diffraction to surface crystallography in general, the reader is referred to Volume 4 of "Topics in Applied Physics".
