It gives a concise and formal account of the theoretical framework of elementary Engineering Mechanics. A distinguishing feature of this textbook is that its content is consistently structured into postulates, definitions and theorems, with rigorous derivations. The reader finds support in a wealth of illustrations and a cross-reference for each deduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to start teaching a course on engineering fracture mechanics, I realized that a concise textbook, giving a general oversight of the field, did not exist. The explanation is undoubtedly that the subject is still in a stage of early development, and that the methodologies have still a very limited applicability. It is not possible to give rules for general application of fracture mechanics concepts. Yet our comprehension of cracking and fracture beha viour of materials and structures is steadily increasing. Further developments may be expected in the not too distant future, enabling useful prediction of fracture safety and fracture characteristics on the basis of advanced fracture mechanics procedures. The user of such advanced procedures m\lst have a general understanding of the elementary concepts, which are provided by this volume. Emphasis was placed on the practical application of fracture mechanics, but it was aimed to treat the subject in a way that may interest both metallurgists and engineers. For the latter, some general knowledge of fracture mechanisms and fracture criteria is indispensable for an apprecia tion of the limita tions of fracture mechanics. Therefore a general discussion is provided on fracture mechanisms, fracture criteria, and other metal lurgical aspects, without going into much detail. Numerous references are provided to enable a more detailed study of these subjects which are still in a stage of speculative treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Solid Mechanics bridges the gap between elementary approaches to strength of materials and more advanced, specialized versions on the subject. The book provides a basic understanding of the fundamentals of elasticity and plasticity, applies these fundamentals to solve analytically a spectrum of engineering problems, and introduces advanced topics of mechanics of materials - including fracture mechanics, creep, superplasticity, fiber reinforced composites, powder compacts, and porous solids. Text includes: stress and strain, equilibrium, and compatibility elastic stress-strain relations the elastic problem and the stress function approach to solving plane elastic problems applications of the stress function solution in Cartesian and polar coordinates Problems of elastic rods, plates, and shells through formulating a strain compatibility function as well as applying energy methods Elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics Plastic and creep deformation Inelastic deformation and its applications This book presents the material in an instructive manner, suitable for individual self-study. It emphasizes analytical treatment of the subject, which is essential for handling modern numerical methods as well as assessing and creating software packages. The authors provide generous explanations, systematic derivations, and detailed discussions, supplemented by a vast variety of problems and solved examples. Primarily written for professionals and students in mechanical engineering, Engineering Solid Mechanics also serves persons in other fields of engineering, such as aerospace, civil, and material engineering.

Engineering mechanics engages the application of the principles of mechanics to expose the real-time engineering problems. The objective of Engineering Mechanics book is shown the problems in mechanics as applied to possibly real-world situations. The book of Engineering Mechanics covers depth explanations on mechanics problems. It explains the rest and in motion mechanisms with the use of scalar method and the SI Units are explained throughout the book. The topics of the book include introduction, laws of mechanics, various forces, center of gravity, moment of inertia and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the basic concepts of space mechanics. These include vector kinematics in three dimensions; Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation; relative motion; the vector-based solution of the classical two-body problem; derivation of Kepler’s equations; orbits in three dimensions; preliminary orbit determination; and orbital maneuvers. The book also covers relative motion and the two-impulse rendezvous problem; interplanetary mission design using patched conics; rigid-body dynamics used to characterize the attitude of a space vehicle; satellite attitude dynamics; and the characteristics and design of multi-stage launch vehicles. Each chapter begins with an outline of key concepts and concludes with problems that are based on the material covered. This text is written for undergraduates who are studying orbital mechanics for the first time and have completed courses in physics, dynamics, and mathematics, including differential equations and applied linear algebra. Graduate students, researchers, and experienced practitioners will also find useful review materials in the book. NEW: Reorganized and improved discusions of coordinate systems, new discussion on perturbations and quarternions NEW: Increased coverage of attitude dynamics, including new Matlab algorithms and examples in chapter 10 New examples and homework problems

Book excerpt: Metal forming plasticity is an advanced subject of intensive current research relevant to both materials science and mechanical engineering. It is used for the analysis and modelling of fabrication processes such as forging, extrusion, rolling, wire, and tube drawing. The fundamentals of flow mechanics are explained here before they are applied in a variety of machine-tool design engineering situations. These fundamentals form the basis of all engineering analyses of the plastic flow in metal forming and are essential to all students of engineering. Worked examples showing the variety of metal forming situations and approximately 200 end-of-chapter problems are also included.
