Book excerpt: Tone: A Linguistic Survey is a nine-chapter text that considers the phonetics and phonology of tone from both a synchronic and a diachronic point of view. The first chapters deal with the physiological and perceptual correlations of tone. These chapters also describe the interactions of tonal and nontonal features. The succeeding chapters provide the phonetic basis for phonological tonal phenomena. These topics are followed by discussions of the physical and physiological aspects of tone, the number of possible contrastive tones in a language, and a suprasegmental representation of tones based on linguistic evidence. This text also summarizes the kinds of tone rules found in languages and the important syntactic function played by tone in a number of the world's languages, particularly those in Africa. The final chapters look into the general and specific principles that constrain historical tone change. This book will prove useful to students with phonology course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristic voice quality of a speaker conveys to listeners a wealth of information about his physical, psychological and social attributes. For this reason, voice quality is of interest to a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, phonetics and speech science, speech pathology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and communication engineering. Literature on voice quality is, consequently, scattered through a correspondingly wide range of publications. While this bibliography is unlikely to be exhaustive, it aims to be comprehensive. Exceptions to this are purely medical literature and literature on speech pathology; also, although a number of different languages are represented, works in English received the principal coverage.

With numerous accompanying videos, the book is a valuable resource for otorhinolaryngologists, speech pathologists and neurologists.

This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for SLPs who care for children with vocal disorders, this is the second book by the team who wrote Pediatric Voice Disorders. This new publication is specially designed for SLPs to have access to the medical information at a special price. To that end, certain chapters have been removed from Pediatric Voice Disorders, which focuses on the techniques of surgical care, and other chapters have been reshaped to highlight issues of office based diagnosis and intervention. Several new chapters have been added, including a fascinating and comprehensive chapter by Katherine Verdolini which reviews the literature regarding voice therapy in children as well as an additional chapter on the work-up and treatment of children with Velopharyngeal Insufficiency. The authors have provided a cross-fertilization of thoughts and ideas that comes from putting together a seemingly diverse group of specialists and having them focus on specific pediatric disease-based and pediatric voice pathology-based topics. Within this book, members of each specialty attend to these questions and comment upon how the specialties can best work together towards obtaining diagnoses and rendering unified and comprehensive treatment.

Highly experienced experts describe approaches via the transoral, transnasal, and transcutaneous routes and offer guidance on indications, injection materials, pre- and postoperative care, and the management of complications. Special considerations that must be borne in mind when employing different vocal fold injection techniques, in different settings, are also carefully explained. In offering comprehensive, up-to-date information on this minimally invasive and cost-effective procedure, Vocal Fold Injection will be an essential aid for practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No special field of surgery dealing with the cranial nerves exists today. This is not surprising in view of the characteristics of this group of morphologically and topo graphically heterogenous nerves. Morphologically we must differentiate between central nerves (I, II and VIII) and the so-called peripheral nerves (nn. III to VII and IX to XII), in which post-lesion rgeneration is quite different. Anatomo-topographi cally we must consider an intracranial and an extracranial part of each cranial nerve. For practical reasons at operation, further subdivisions of the intracranial course of cranial nerves are to be distinguished in the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae as well as within the petrous bone. This underscores the extensive tasks awaiting surgeons operating in the ventral part of the brain and facial skull as well as in the more dorsal part of the skull and neck. This very wide field cannot be covered by a single surgical discipline alone. In our opinion, considerable progress has been made in surgery of the cranial nerves only in recent years. This may be explained by the increased mastery of microsurgical techniques by all surgeons in terested in the surgery of the base of the skull as well as with the initiation of more interdisciplinary consultation and jointly performed operations. Possibilities of fu ture development can be discerned in the text. The base of the skull separating the extra-and intracranial part of cranial nerves should not be a barrier but a connect ing link.

All cases stress the "real-life" presentation of a specific clinical problem, beginning with high-quality radiographs and followed by patient history, radiographic findings, differential-diagnosis, discussion, and suggestions for further reading. Highlighted "Pearls," "Pitfalls", and "Controversial Issues" round out the presentation of each case and provide the reader with hundreds of useful hints and recommendations. A must for residents rotating in sub-specialties or studying for board examinations, the Teaching Atlas series is also a useful review for experienced practitioners. In the TEACHING ATLAS OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE, you'll find comprehensive coverage of the entire field of nuclear medicine through a series of clearly presented cases. Following the board exam format, the cases are presented as unknowns, with an image and brief clinical description; you are then asked to arrive at your own differential diagnosis. Complete with tips, pearls, pitfalls, and a brief discussion of each case, this is the ideal book for self-testing and maximizing your study time.
