Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrotherapy and Light Therapy World War II thus found physical therapy ready for further expansion and for its fullest utilization for the benefit of war casualties. No wonder that the number Of physical therapy departments and training centers in Army and Navy hospitals and other service and rehabilitation centers has reached an all time high. The need for caring for the injured, convalescent and those to be rehabilitated has made physical therapy methods the cornerstone of this work and also by practical necessity brought occupational therapy in close correlation to it. All this is likely to continue for many years to come. At the same time, the term Physical Medicine became Officially adopted in connection with the greatly increased 1 scope of physical methods for treatment and diagnosis. The American Medical Association, in renaming in 1944 its Council on Physical Therapy the Council on Physical Medicine, stated: Physical medicine includes the employment of the physical and other effective properties of light, heat, cold, water, electricity, massage, manipulation, exercise and mechan ical devices for physical and occupational therapy in the diagnosis and treatment Of disease. In the same year a great American citizen and humanitarian appointed the Baruch Committee on Physical Medicine, and after its extensive survey of the needs of this branch of medicine he donated a fund Of over a million dollars to carry out the most urgent educational and research requirements. Simultaneously, the National Research Council and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis also made grants for research in physical medicine. As a result of all these new developments, prospects for large scale increase in instruo tion, research and clinical application of physical medicine in the near future are indeed bright. In the fifth edition of this work a concise presentation Of all present day phases of physical medicine is offered, While special emphasis on electro therapy and light therapy is being retained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radiotherapy and Phototherapy: Including Radium and High-Frequency Currents, Their Medical and Surgical Applications in Diagnosis and Treatment; For Students and Practitioners The new therapy, based upon recent discoveries in the domain of radiant energy, has already achieved such positive results in some hitherto intractable maladies as to warrant us in considering it a powerful addition to our armamentarium. Naturally this has stimulated an immense amount of investigation and experiment, so that the reduction of this mass of knowledge to a usable form and the elimination of faulty observation have required the review of a vast quantity of Literature coming from all quarters of the civilized globe. Much that is incorrect has gained publicity and even credence. In order to secure adequate data on which to base a judgment of the actual merits and relative values of the various methods of treatment by light and rays, the author and those aiding him have endeavored to ascertain the truth, so far as possible, by actual work before committing any statement to print. As several excellent books are already available upon the practical and technical side of radiography, this subject has been briefly treated in the present volume, and the space thus gained has been devoted to the newer, larger, and more important field of therapy. For similar reasons shadow pictures and elementary electrophysics have been excluded as foreign to the purpose of the work. High-frequency currents have been considered at length because of the newness of the subject, its comparative absence from American medical literature, and its close relations to other new methods here discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical Uses of Electricity This is practically the 1 1th edition of this work. After passing through eight editions, the old work of Beard and Rockwell was thoroughly revised and mostly rewritten by the present writer. The old stereotyped plates were destroyed and all illustrations newly drawn. Four years ago another edition was issued in which no less pains were taken to keep the book fully abreast the times, in the departments of X-ray Diagnosis and Therapeutics, Light Therapy, Vibratory Therapeutics and High Frequency Currents. In the present edition, the chapter on High Frequency Currents has been enlarged and mostly rewritten, together with various needed changes and additions in the departments of X-ray Diagnosis and Therapeutics. The chapter devoted to photo-therapy has been enlarged and much of it rewritten, while the subject of radio-activity is considered in an additional chapter. But while welcoming the new it has been the aim of the writer not to discard the old simply because it is old. To his mind a grave error has been committed by those who have either abandoned or never attempted the use of those indispensable manifestations of electric force - the direct and induced continuous currents (galvanic and faradic). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Therapeutics of Radiant, Light and Heat and Convective Heat AT the request of students and other members of the profession for a condensed manual on the employment of radiant light and heat, the writer has been induced to prepare the following chapters. In considering the subject, attention has been devoted to the elucidation of the physiological actions, practical indica tions, and methods of employing radiant light and heat from the modern point of view. It will be found by investigators that there is much to be derived from the scientific employment of these measures in therapeutics; and that the field of indication is much greater than the rank and file of the profession are aware of. A chapter has been included on the relative action of radiant light and heat and the Roentgen ray, a subject of great importance in radiotherapy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Electrotherapy: And Their Practical Application This book is the outcome of an attempt to explain the therapeutic action of electricity upon rational grounds and upon physiological principles. In Part I current electricity is discussed. The thera peutie action of static electricity is here considered, because it is mainly the currents derived from the static machine, and not the static charge itself, which possess therapeutic action. The static machine serves to generate a static charge, which, when sufficient voltage has been attained, discharges as a current of very low intensity, but of very high potential, and so affords methods of therapy unattainable by other means. The necessity of clearly distinguishing between the polar and inter-polar action of the constant current is pointed out. The action of interrupted currents of low frequency is shown to be due to the relatively high velocity of the hydrogen ion compared to the velocities of the other ions in the tissues.
