Book excerpt: Superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid systems often bring about new physics and may as well be useful to design new non-volatile, high-density memory devices for superconducting electronics.In this thesis, we study two different types of SF hybrids, each following a possible approach to memory devices, but focusing on fundamental aspects. One is about the proximity effect in oxide heterostructures. In these, triplet correlations appear, that are both superconducting and spin-polarized. These enable using effects from spintronics like GMR, but are also very dependent on interface properties. We investigated these in SFS oxide trilayers by conductance measurements. These showed oscillations which may, in part, be related to these triplet states. We also observed that interface effects affect the electronic properties of the ferromagnet, especially when that layer is thin. Another type of interaction occurs through stray magnetic fields from the domain structures. Recent theoretical proposals suggested that small swirling spin textures called skyrmions could similarly interact with superconductivity through this mechanism. We investigated such coupling in bilayers, in which the superconducting vortex dynamics dominate the transport properties. We found that the presence of skyrmions and domains alike enhances the critical current. It also leads to an unusual Hall effect in the superconducting state. Most of these properties can be explained qualitatively in terms of vortex pinning and guided motion.

Book excerpt: Graphene has remarkable opportunities for spintronics due to its high mobility and long spin diffusion length, especially when encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Beyond the three basic processes of spin injection, spin transport, and spin detection, it is crucial to explore new methods of spin manipulation in order to develop novel architectures for spin-based logic. In the first chapter of this thesis, I briefly introduce the field of spintronics and graphene related research. In the second chapter, I present the spin diffusion model used in this thesis to analyze spin transport in graphene and heterostructures spintronics. In the third chapter, I present my work on gate-tunable spin transport in h-BN encapsulated graphene-based spin valves with one-dimensional ferromagnetic contacts. The non-local spin signal can be tuned by gate voltage and even change polarity. The gate-controlled spin polarity via magnetic proximity effect may overcome the usual need for an applied magnetic field and a magnetization reversal to implement the graphene-based spin logic. Beyond magnetic proximity effect, another route for graphene spintronics is to combine with other two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC). In the fourth chapter, I demonstrate spin injection from monolayer MoS2 to few-layer graphene following optical valley/spin exciation in MoS2 with circularly polarized light up to room temperature. The magnitude and direction of spin polarization is controlled by both helicity and photon energy. These results demonstrate a 2D spintronic/valleytronic system that achieves optical spin injection and lateral spin transport at room temperature in a single device, which paves the way for multifunctional 2D spintronic devices for memory and logic applications. The central issue of this multidisciplinary field is the manipulation of the spin degree of freedom in solid-state systems. Discoveries in recent years have inspired a new route in spintronic research which needs no ferromagnetic components. The research field "spintronic without magnetism" is based on the possibility to manipulate electric currents via spin-orbit coupling only. The spin Hall effect (SHE) is one of the most promising effects for the generation of spin polarized currents which is even present in non-magnetic materials. The SHE appears when an electric current flows through a medium with spin-orbit coupling present, leading to a spin-current perpendicular to the charge current. In this work the SHE as well as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) are investigated on a first principles level using the spin-polarized fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method (SPR-KKR-GF) in conjunction with the linear response Kubo-Streda formalism. Intrinsic as well as extrinsic contributions to the SHE/AHE are treated on equal footing. This opened up for the first time the possibility to reliably decompose the SHE/AHE into skew and side-jump scattering as well as intrinsic contributions in a quantitative manner.

Book excerpt: The proximity effect in superconductor (SC) - ferromagnet (FM) system produces many interesting phenomena due to the interplay between two competing orderings, superconductivity and ferromagnetism. This dissertation studies the influence of the orientation of magnetic moments on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc̳) in FM/SC/FM sandwiched structures. The superconducting transition temperature of a FM/SC/FM spin valve depends on the mutual orientation of the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic layers. This phenomenon, called the spin switch effect, has been previously observed in FM/SC/FM systems as a Tc̳ difference between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the ferromagnetic layers. Both standard (TP̳c̳ TA̳P̳c̳) and inverse (TP̳c̳ TA̳P̳̳c̳) spin switch effects have been reported in different superconducting spin valve systems but the origin of the inverse spin switch effect was not understood. In this dissertation, a discovery of the coexistence of the standard and inverse spin switch effects in Ni1 Fe19 /Nb/Ni1 Fe19 /Ir25 Mn--5 spin valves is described. The measurements reveal that the inverse spin switch effect originates from dissipative flow of vortices induced by stray magnetic field of magnetostatically coupled Neel domain wall pairs in the ferromagnetic layers. This dissertation also studies the Tc̳ of FM/SC/FM sandwiched systems with noncollinear (neither parallel nor antiparallel) orientation of the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic layers, where the odd triplet superconducting component is predicated to arise. Tc̳ in Cu48 Ni52 /Nb/Cu48 Ni52 trilayers as a function of the angle between the Cu48 Ni52 layer magnetizations is measured. The shape of the observed angular dependence ofTc̳ is in qualitative agreement with SC/FM proximity theories that account for the odd triplet component of the condensate, but large discrepancy in the magnitude is found.

We study consider two platforms: quantum Hall-superconductor (QH-SC) heterostructures and Josephson junctions. In the first platform, we study QH graphene-SC systems with a focus on the influence symmetry-breaking effects have on Andreev transport. In graphene, valley and spin degeneracy lead to an approximate SU(4) symmetry that is reflected in the approximate 4-fold degeneracy of graphene's Landau levels (LL). We develop an effective low-energy description of Andreev edge states that takes into account the correction to the drift velocity of the QH-SC edge modes due to SU(4) symmetry-breaking effects. We show that Zeeman and valley splitting effects can be used to demonstrate Andreev edge state interference. We also present numerical simulations of Andreev conversion in the lowest LL of canted antiferromagnetic graphene. In the second platform, we analyze Josephson effects and the microwave response of Josephson junctions. We propose a theory for a Leggett collective mode in Dirac semimetals-based Josephson junctions and simulate the microwave response of the junction. We also study Landau-Zener transitions (LZT) between Andreev bound states in Josephson junctions. We present a protocol using superconducting quantum interference devices to differentiate between LZTs between Andreev states, which mimic signatures of Majoranas, and systems with real Majoranas.
