Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoemission is one of the principal techniques for the characterization and investigation of condensed matter systems. The field has experienced many developments in recent years, which may also be put down to important achievements in closely related areas. This timely and up-to-date handbook is written by experts in the field who provide the background needed by both experimentalists and theorists. It represents an interesting framework for showing the connection between theory and experiment by bringing together different concepts in the investigation of the properties of materials. The work addresses the geometric and electronic structure of solid surfaces and interfaces, theoretical methods for direct computation of spectra, experimental techniques for data acquisition, and physical models for direct data interpretation. It also includes such recent developments as full hemisphere acceptance in photoemission, two-electron photoemission, (e, 2e) electron diffraction, and photoelectron-electron/hole interaction.
Book Synopsis Spectroscopic Studies of the Electronic Structure of Metal-Semiconductor and Vacuum-Semiconductor Interfaces by : Dean E. Eastman
Download or read book Spectroscopic Studies of the Electronic Structure of Metal-Semiconductor and Vacuum-Semiconductor Interfaces written by Dean E. Eastman and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electronic structure and properties of semiconductor interfaces including both vacuum-semiconductor and metal-semiconductor interfaces as well as relevant metal and semiconductor materials have been investigated under this contract. The emphasis has been on elucidating the electronic properties of these materials and their interfaces, e.g., metal-semiconductor Schottky barriers, which are of far reaching importance in such semiconductor devices as MOSFETS, CCD devices, photovoltaic devices, etc. Extensive studies of the electronic structure of semiconductor surfaces and interfaces and related metal surfaces have been performed as a function of surface preparation (include laser annealing), doping, thickness of adsorbed overlayers, etc. The principle technique used has been photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS - with an emphasis on angle-resolved studies using synchrotron radiation and yield spectroscopy); other techniques include electron energy loss spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction and theoretical band structure methods. Major achievements of our research program includes world-leading contributions to: (1) the electronic structure of cleaned and annealed Si(111) surfaces; (2) accurate experimental determinations of electron energy vs momentum band dispersions E(k) of selected materials (such E(K) dispersions are of central importance in solid state physics in understanding the electronic, physical and chemical properties of materials); and (3) the development and application of surface core level spectroscopy, a promising new photoemission technique.

Download or read book Angle-Resolved Photoemission written by S.D. Kevan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-05-15 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angle-resolved photoemission has become an indispensable tool for solid state and surface physicists and chemists. This book covers the underlying phenomenology of the technique, reviews its application to existing problems, and discusses future applications. The book is particularly timely given the significant improvements in experimental and theoretical methodology which have recently been or soon will be attained, namely, ultrahigh resolution studies using improved sources of synchrotron radiation, quasiparticle interpretation of measured dispersion relations and spectra, in situ growth of novel materials, etc. The technique has been applied predominantly to understand materials for which the one-electron paradigm is a reasonable approximation. Most chapters discuss this type of experiment: 2D and 3D states in metals and semiconductors, extrinsic states induced by adsorption, etc. Applications of the technique to materials where electron correlation plays a comparable role to that of solid state hybridization, ferro- and antiferromagnets, high Tc superconductors, etc. are rapidly growing in popularity. These areas are also discussed and a foundation is laid for further experiments in this direction. Almost all chapters contain comprehensive bibliographies and compendia of systems studied. The book has an extensive index which cross references applications and systems studied.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hands are useless if there are no eyes to see what is obvious." -M. V. Lomonosov Dear Reader, I invite you to open this book and step on the semiconductor surface, where the processes that form the subject of the book come into play. The surface of the semiconductor is attracting more and more interest among researchers, in fact researchers in two different fields. These are notably the physicists and engineers engaged in research in semi conductor physics and the making of semiconductor devices. The entire industry of semiconductor instruments hinges on the problem of the surface. The quality of semiconductor devices, whose use is growing steadily, depends essentially on the properties of the surface. The instability of these properties and their uncon trollable alterations with temperature and under the influence of environmental conditions result in a lack of stability in the performance of semiconductor devices, hence the high percentage of waste in their industrial production. The methods used in factory laboratories to prevent such waste are largely empirical. The properties of the surface, the nature of the physicochemical processes that take place on it, and the role of environmental factors still remain obscure. A major task of the semiconductor industry is to learn to control the properties of the surface.

Book Synopsis Electronic Structure and Quantized Surface Electron Accumulation of Narrow Band Gap Semiconductors by : Leyla Colakerol
Download or read book Electronic Structure and Quantized Surface Electron Accumulation of Narrow Band Gap Semiconductors written by Leyla Colakerol and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Narrow band gap semiconductors play a crucial role in thin film photovoltaic cells and optoelectronics devices operating in the infrared region of visible spectrum. The interactions between the valence and conduction bands due to the narrow band gap have a big influence on the electronic structure and the device performance of these materials. The surface and bulk electronic properties of narrow band gap semiconductors were investigated using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray emission spectroscopy. Comparisons were made between the experimental results and density functional theory band structure calculations. Intrinsic electron accumulation near the surface of clean InN was directly observed by ARPES. The accumulation layer is discussed in terms of the bulk Fermi level (E F) lying below the pinned surface E F, with a confining potential formed normal to surface due to the downward band bending facilitated by donor type surface states or nitrogen vacancies. Various spectroscopic techniques were used to measure this band bending. The energy of the Fermi level and the size of the Fermi surface for these quantum well states could be controlled by varying the method of surface preparation and by the adsorption of potassium on the surface. Intermixing between the heavy and light hole valence bands in the intrinsic quantum well potential associated with the surface electron accumulation layer results in an inverted band structure, with the valence band maximum lying away from the Brillouin zone center. Similarly, the electronic band structure of CdO was investigated and quantized electron subbands were observed above the valence band maximum. The origin of the accumulation layer is discussed in terms of the bulk band structure of CdO calculated using quasi particle corrected density functional theory. High electron density at the surface of these materials provides new opportunities for potential device structures such as sensors, high frequency transmitters and field effect transistors. Therefore the study of their near surface electron accumulation and electronic structure is of importance in understanding the properties of these materials and discovering new application areas.
Book Synopsis Studies of Electronic and Structural Interactions at Surfaces: Metal Overlayers on Semiconductors by : John H. Weaver
Download or read book Studies of Electronic and Structural Interactions at Surfaces: Metal Overlayers on Semiconductors written by John H. Weaver and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have examined the electronic interactions and structural modifications which occur when metal overlayers are deposited onto clean semiconductor surfaces. We have examined these interactions as the physical and chemical parameters of the surface/interface are changed, have assessed atomic interdiffusion and overlayer reaction and have determined whether clusters form and how they affect the properties of the interface. We have sought fundamental information describing interface evolution from the initial adatom on a surface through the growth of the extended, fully-reacted, microscopic interface.
