Book excerpt: Self-trapped holes (STH) and self-trapped excitons (STE) in amorphous silicon dioxide have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A hybrid functional which includes some exact exchange, the PBEO functional, was used with a plane wave basis set. The commonly used semi-local PW91 functional was not accurate enough to represent these electronic defects.

A. B. Devine, University of New Mexico, USA J.-P. Duraud, ESRF, Grenoble, France and E. Dooryhée, ESRF, Grenoble, France Silicon dioxide is one of the most common naturally occurring materials. Its applications range from nuclear waste storage to optical fibre communications to silicon microelectronics. Experts from America, Europe and Japan have written chapters covering both the amorphous and the crystalline phases of the material with particular reference to its structure and defects. The book is divided into four sections: Topological Models for the Crystalline and Amorphous Phases Electronic Structure Macroscopic and Point Defects Processing and Applications of Crystalline and Amorphous Phases Engineers, researchers and postgraduate students of materials science, physics and engineering will all find this an extremely useful addition to their libraries.

Book excerpt: Silicon dioxide plays a central role in most contemporary electronic and photonic technologies, from fiber optics for communications and medical applications to metal-oxide-semiconductor devices. Many of these applications directly involve point defects, which can either be introduced during the manufacturing process or by exposure to ionizing radiation. They can also be deliberately created to exploit new technologies. This book provides a general description of the influence that point defects have on the global properties of the bulk material and their spectroscopic characterization through ESR and optical spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: The contents of this volume represent most of the papers presented either orally or as posters at the international conference held in Les rd th Arcs, Savoie, from June 29 to July 3 1987. The declared objective of the conference was to bring together specialists working in various fields, both academic and applied, to examine the state of our under standing of the physics of amorphous sioz from the point of view of its structure, defects (both intrinsic and extrinsic), its ability to trans port current and to trap charges, its sensitivity to irradiation, etc. For this reason, the proceedings is divided, as was the conference schedule, into a number of sections starting from a rather academic viewpoint of the internal structure of idealized Si0 and progressing 2 towards subjects of increasing technological importance such as charge transport and trapping and breakdown in thin films. The proceedings terminates with a section on novel applications of amorphous SiOz and in particular, buried oxide layers formed by ion implantation. Although every effort was made at the conference to ensure that each presentation occured in its most obvious session, in editing the proceedings we have taken the liberty of changing the order where it seems that a paper was in fact more appropriate to an alternative section. In any event, because of the natural overlap of subjects, many papers could have been suitably placed in several different sections.

Book excerpt: Graph grammars originated in the late 60s, motivated by considerations about pattern recognition and compiler construction. Since then, the list of areas which have interacted with the development of graph grammars has grown quite impressively. Besides the aforementioned areas, it includes software specification and development, VLSI layout schemes, database design, modeling of concurrent systems, massively parallel computer architectures, logic programming, computer animation, developmental biology, music composition, visual languages, and many others. The area of graph grammars and graph transformations generalizes formal language theory based on strings and the theory of term rewriting based on trees. As a matter of fact, within the area of graph grammars, graph transformation is considered as a fundamental computation paradigm where computation includes specification, programming, and implementation. Over the last three decades, graph grammars have developed at a steady pace into a theoretically attractive and important-for-applications research field.Volume 2 of the indispensable Handbook of Graph Grammars and Computing by Graph Transformations considers applications to functional languages, visual and object-oriented languages, software engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical process engineering, and images. It also presents implemented specification languages and tools, and structuring and modularization concepts for specification languages. The contributions have been written in a tutorial/survey style by the top experts in the corresponding areas. This volume is accompanied by a CD-Rom containing implementations of specification environments based on graph transformation systems, and tools whose implementation is based on the use of graph transformation systems.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of the properties of materials that can be in a crystalline and glassy state. Its central focus is the physics of solids, whose structure is disordered, since the existing theories of solids are based on crystal structures. The approach adopted here is based on the comparison of data for crystals and glasses formed by the same atoms, paying particular attention to the under-explored glass-forming crystals. The book will be of interest to graduate students, solid states researchers, glass technologists, and young scientists beginning research in the field of experimental physics.

Book excerpt: Gettering Defects in Semiconductors fulfills three basic purposes: – to systematize the experience and research in exploiting various gettering techniques in microelectronics and nanoelectronics; – to identify new directions in research, particularly to enhance the perspective of professionals and young researchers and specialists; – to fill a gap in the contemporary literature on the underlying semiconductor-material theory. The authors address not only well-established gettering techniques but also describe contemporary trends in gettering technologies from an international perspective. The types and properties of structural defects in semiconductors, their generating and their transforming mechanisms during fabrication are described. The primary emphasis is placed on classifying and describing specific gettering techniques, their specificity arising from both their position in a general technological process and the regimes of their application. This book addresses both engineers and material scientists interested in semiconducting materials theory and also undergraduate and graduate students in solid–state microelectronics and nanoelectronics. A comprehensive list of references provides readers with direction for further reading.
