Book Synopsis United States Code by : United States
Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a simple announcement on a summer day. It appeared to be a straightforward proposal to solve a serious problem. Constrained by a statutory requirement for self-funding and facing a new paradigm in information dissemination, the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) was failing. As federal agencies distributed reports at no cost on the World Wide Web-- reports that formerly NTIS had distributed--NTIS was unable to collect revenue sufficient to cover its costs of cataloging and maintaining its collection. The proposal put forth in August 1999 by the Department of Commerce (where NTIS is organizationally located) was to close NTIS and move its collections and functions to the Library of Congress. The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) immediately recognized this proposal to be far more significant than it first appeared. Fundamental issues regarding how the government used, disseminated and valued its information resources were at stake. The Commission stepped forward and prepared a preliminary assessment of the proposed closure of NTIS, which it delivered to the President and Congress. This report recommended a number of steps to keep NTIS operational, but it also stated that a much broader assessment of the underlying issues involved in public information dissemination throughout government was needed.

Book excerpt: The editors believe that information professionals must move beyond mere description of government information sources and activities and assess the policy system that provides a framework for them. Beginning with the need for research and analytical studies in the field, the authors trace the historical development of Federal information policy; review the role of the Office of Management and Budget in the development of policy; and present private-sector and citizens' perspectives. Other topics include: rights and restrictions of access to government information; electronic collection and dissemination of information by Federal agencies; the National Technical Information Service and efforts to privatize its operations; and the complexities in dealing with protected information. Book Synopsis Information Management by : David L. Mcclure
Download or read book Information Management written by David L. Mcclure and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government Printing Office (GPO) is the principal agent for federal printing. Specifically, all printing for the three branches of government with a few exceptions is required to be done by GPO. GPO also disseminates and sells government publications through programs managed by the Superintendent of Documents. The Superintendent disseminates government publications to the public through the depository library program and sells publications online, through 23 bookstores, and by mail order. Until recently, the dissemination and sales programs dealt mostly in paper, microfiche, or CD-ROM formats. However, advances in electronic publishing technologies and the availability of government publications on the World Wide Web are affecting paper-based dissemination and sales and are raising questions about the direction and future of the Federal Depository Library Program. The conference report 1 for the legislative branch appropriations for 2001 required that we submit to you, by March 30, 2001, a study on electronic dissemination of government information. Specifically, we were required to.
