Book excerpt: A key feature of the experimental procedure is the easy interchange of short gaseous and thin solid targets at the same physical position, with all apparatus aperture sizes, dimensions, positions, and other experimental details unaltered. It has therefore been possible to cancel most systematic apparatus effects in comparing gaseous and solid target results. By using single ion-atom collision techniques, by using bare and few-electron ions of appreciably higher charge than heretofore, by extending the velocity range of measurement appreciably above that of earlier experiments, and by studying charge-state variation over an appreciably wider range than used previously, it has been possible to test experimentally features of continuum electron-capture and -loss theories which have been inaccessible in previous experiments. These somewhat orthogonal tests complement rather than duplicate earlier experimental tests, but, like them, raise new questions about still other conspicuous disagreements.

Book excerpt: Results of several recent ion-atom and ion-solid collision experiments concerning the forward peak in continuum electron production from electron capture and loss to projectile-centered continuum states are discussed. Emphasis is given to discussion of three recent experiments carried out at the ORNL and BNL tandem accelerators. The first concerns disagreement between theory and experiment on the projectile Z dependence for electron capture to projectile-centered continuum states (ECC) in ion-atom collisions. The second concerns the discovery of unpredicted periodic (interference) structure in the electron loss channel (ELC) in ion-atom collisions. The third concerns failure of both ECC and ''wake-riding'' models of the forward peak characteristics in ion-solid collisions. 28 references.

Book excerpt: The interaction of particles and photons with solid surfaces is interdisci plinary in character, so that very recent developments in solid-state phys ics, surface physics and atomic physics stimulate progress in the field or profit from results of the "ion-solid" community. Technical interest in the field ranges from catalysis and semiconductor manufacturing to fusion re search, for instance by surface analytical techniques, or interest in phenom ena such as sputtering and radiation damage. The Third International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Surface Coll isions, held at Feldkirchen-Westerham under the auspices of Max-Planck-Institut fUr Plasmaphysik, Garching, Fed. Rep. of Germany, brought together 63 scientists from 12 countries for three days of very involved discussions. As at the pre vious workshops at Bell Laboratories in 1976 and McMaster University in 1978, the experiment of gathering experts from seemingly different disciplines was very successful in promoting the basic physical ideas. The proceedings contain the 14 major reviews and a smaller number of con tributions presented at the workshop. All papers have been reviewed with little delay, and the reviewer's efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The first group of papers is concerned with theoretical and experimental aspects of secondary electron emission due to ion impact, including the potential emission caused by slow metastables. This is followed by reviews of exper iments and recent theoretical developments of electron- and photon-induced desorption.

ActuaZZy, the first conference to be heZd under the titZe '~tomic CoZZisions in SoZids" was heZd at Sussex University in EngZand in 1969 and the second at GausdaZ, Norway in 1971, which wouZd ZogicaZZy make the conference heZd at GatZinburg, Tennessee, U.S.A. in 1973 the third (III). However, the appearance of the proceedings of the 1971 GausdaZ Conference (pubZished by Gordon and Breach) bore the number IV. The reasoning behind this was that, in fact, two pre vious conferences had been ZargeZy dedicated to the same subject area. The first of these Was at Aarhus, Denmark in 1965 and the second in 1967 was heZd in ChaZk River, Canada. Hence, the number V for the 1973 meeting. ActuaZZy, the conference can easiZy be traced back to Paris, France in 196Z when it went under the coZorfuZ titZe of '~e Bom bardement Ionique." In 1962 a smaZZ conference was heZd at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U.S.A. at which the discovery of channeZing was first formaZZy annunciated. This was foZZowed by conferences at ChaZk River, Canada in 1963 and at HarweZZ, EngZand in 1964. More over, immediateZy foZZowing the ChaZk RiVer conference in 1967 there was a conference on higher energy coZZisions at Brookhaven, New York, U.S.A. Thus, strictly speaking, the Gatlinburg meeting is the tenth (X) in the series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 75 years the stopping of energetic ions in matter has been a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The theoretical treatment of the stopping of ions in matter is largely due to the work of Bohr, 1-3 Bethe,4-6 Bloch,7. s and Lindhard,9-12 and it has been reviewed by Bohr,3 Fano,13 17 20 Jackson,14 Sigmund,15 Ahlen,16 and Ziegler et al. - Soon after the discovery of energetic particle emission from radioactive materials, there was interest in how these corpuscles were slowed down in traversing matter. In 1900, Marie Curie stated 21 the hypothesis that Hies rayons alpha sont des projectiles materiels susceptibles de perdre de leur vitesse en travers ant la matiere." Early attempts to evaluate this were incon clusive for there was not yet an accurate proposed model of the atom. Enough experimental evidence was collected in the next decade to make stopping power theory one of the central concerns of those attempting to develop an atomic model. J.J. Thomson, director of the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory, and Niels Bohr, a fresh postdoctoral scientist at Rutherford's Manchester Laboratory, both published almost simultaneously22. 23 an analysis of the stopping of charged particles by matter, and each contained many of their divergent ideas on the model of an atom. Thomson ignored in his paper the Rutherford alpha-particle scattering 24 experiment of a year before. But the nuclear atom with a heavy positively 25 charged core was the basis of Bohr's ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents volume 2 of a 3-volume monograph on Particle Penetration and Radiation Effects. While volume 1 addressed the basic theory of scattering and stopping of swift point charges, i.e., protons, antiprotons and alpha particles, the present volume focuses on ions heavier than helium as well as molecules and clusters over an energy range from a few keV/u to a few hundred MeV/u. The book addresses the foundations in atomic-collision physics of a wide variety of application areas within materials and surface science and engineering, micro and nano science and technology, radiation medicine and biology as well as nuclear and particle physics. Problems have been added to all chapters. This should make the book useful for both self-study and advanced university courses. An effort has been made to establish a unified notation throughout the monograph.

Book excerpt: Early in 1989, while most of us were gathered in the Mediterranean five-centuries-old city of Alacant, the idea of a school on stopping and particle penetration phenomena came to our minds. Later that year when discussing this plan with some of the participants in the 13th International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids in Aarhus, we were pleased to note that the proposal was warmly welcomed indeed by the community. An Advanced Study Institute on this or a related subject had not been organized in the last decade. Because of the progress made particularly in the interaction of high energy beams with matter, and the many applications which the general subject of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter enjoys, a Study Institute appeared a worthy enterprise. Even though several international conference series cover developments in these areas, they miss tutorial introductions to the field. The title chosen was Interaction of Charged Particles with Solids and Surfaces, and the objectives were stated as follows: "to cover theory and experiments, including selected applications and hot topics, of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter. The emphasis will be on outlining the areas where further effort is needed, and on specifying the basic needs in applications. Fundamental concepts will prevail over applications, and the character of the Institute as a school will be stressed. " The school was directed by Fernando Flores (Spain), Herbert M. Urbassek (Germany), Nestor R.

Book excerpt: During the last two decades the explorations of di?erent processes accom- nyingion–atom collisions athigh-impactenergieshavebeenasubjectofmuch interest. This interest was generated not only by the advent of accelerators of relativistic heavy ions which enabled one to investigate these collisions in an experiment and possible applications of obtained results in other ?elds of physics, but also by the variety of physical mechanisms underlying the atomic collisional phenomena at high impact energies. Often highly charged projectiles produced at accelerators of heavy ions are not fully stripped ions but carry one or more very tightly bound el- trons. In collisions with atomic targets, these electrons can be excited or lost and this may occur simultaneously with electronic transitions in the target. The present book concentrates on, and may serve as an introduction to, th- retical methods which are used to describe the projectile–electron transitions occurringinhigh-energycollisionsbetweenionsandneutralatoms.Special- tention is given to relativistic impact energies and highly charged projectiles. Experimental results are used merely as illustrations and tests for theory. This book will be useful to graduate students and professional scientists who are interested in studying atomic collisions occurring at high-impact - ergies. It assumes that the reader possesses the basic knowledge in classical electrodynamics and nonrelativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics.
