Book excerpt: The word "e;force"e; in this case is not used to mean mechanical force, measured in newtons, but a potential, or energy per unit of charge, measured in volts. In electromagnetic induction, Electro-Motive force (emf) can be defined around a closed loop as the electromagnetic work that would be done on a charge, if it travels once around that loop. For a time-varying magnetic flux linking a loop, the electric potential scalar field is not defined due to circulating electric vector field, but nevertheless an emf does work, that can be measured as a virtual electric potential around that loop. The electromotive force EMF of a source of electric potential energy is defined as the amount of electric energy per Coulomb of positive charge as the charge passes through the source from low potential to high potential. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Book excerpt: Principles of Measurement and Transduction of Biomedical Variables is a comprehensive text on biomedical transducers covering the principles of functioning, application examples and new technology solutions. It presents technical and theoretical principles to measure biomedical variables, such as arterial blood pressure, blood flow, temperature and CO2 concentration in exhaled air and their transduction to an electrical variable, such as voltage, so they can be more easily quantified, processed and visualized as numerical values and graphics. The book includes the functioning principle, block diagram, modelling equations and basic application of different transducers, and is an ideal resource for teaching measurement and transduction of biomedical variables in undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical engineering programs. - Will help you to understand the design and functioning of biomedical transducers through practical examples and applied information - Covers MEMS and laser sensors - Reviews the range of devices and techniques available plus the advantages and shortcomings for each transducer type

Book excerpt: University Physics is designed for the two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. The text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project.
