Book excerpt: This book discusses recent developments in electroluminescent (EL) displays, in particular thin-film EL displays, which are all-solid emissive displays with fast response, wide viewing angle, high resolution, wide operating temperature ranges and good display qualities. First, the characteristics of four types of EL devices are presented, and the physics of ac thin-film EL devices are detailed, including ideal models, measuring and evaluation methods, high-field electronic transport and properties of phosphor materials. The book emphasizes recent developments in phosphor materials for color thin-film EL devices based on ZnS, SrS, CaS and CaGa2S4, and multicolor thin-film EL panels in four-panel structures. Other important features discussed are drive methods and reliability issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electroluminescent display panel of the cross-grid-matrix-type was fabricated on a 10-3/4 x 10-3/4-inch glass substrate using improved vacuum deposition procedures and a high brightness manganese-doped ZnS phosphor. This panel contained 256 x 256 active elements within an area of approximately 7 x 7 inches. Linear resolution was 36 elements per inch with a cross-conductor width of 0.020 inch and a separation of 0.007 inch. The display panel was successfully used as a viewing screen for rear-projected images. The brightness-voltage relationship of the thin film phosphor was such that a cross-suppression ratio in excess of 10,000 to 1 was achieved with an excited element brightness of 100 ft-L. Performance measurements indicated that the optimum drive frequency was about 15 kHz. For pulsed operation, a burst frequency of 37.5 Hz, a carrier frequency of 15 kHz, and a duty cycle of 0.25 percent gave an average brightness of a few foot-Lamberts. Useful operating lifetime of several hundred hours under the above conditions was indicated by preliminary data. The variation in brightness uniformity over a group of cells near the center of the panel was less than 7 percent at an average brightness level of 16 ft-L.A brightness reduction of about 12 percent was observed at a single cell when the contacting configuration was varied on the stannic oxide electrode. Book excerpt: Liquid crystals and electroluminescent organic materials have a wide commercial application in flat panel displays, in products such as clocks, navigational aids and laptop computers. Traditionally there has been a divide between the two fields of organic materials research and industrial activity. This book aims to bridge that gap and provide a standard reference work for all those involved. Starting with the first prototype and moving chapter by chapter through developments to the present day, Flat Panel Displays: Advanced Organic Materials describes the display type device specifications and material development. With clear descriptions and diagrams, the reader is presented with the fundamental properties of liquid crystals and electroluminescent organic compounds, along with the mode of operation of the displays using them. Written in a non-mathematical way, this book will be welcomed by chemists, physicists and materials scientists in both industry and research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Workshop on Electroluminescence (EL-88) was held at the Hotel Holiday, Tottori, Japan, October 11-14, 1988. This workshop was sponsored by the 125 Research Committee on Mutual Conversion between Light and Electricity, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, in cooperation with SID (Society for Infonnation Display) Japan Chapter, Tottori Prefecture, the Tot tori Industrial Technology Association, and the Foundation for Advancement of International Science (FAIS). The workshop EL-88 was a continuation of the series of international work shops held successively at Liege (Belgium) in 1980, Bad Stuer (DDR) in 1983, and at Wann Springs (Oregon, USA) in 1986. It brought together scientists and engi neers from universities and industry who shared a common interest in discussing electroluminescence and related topics. The number of participants reached 253; 49 from abroad (10 countries) and 204 from Japan. This is almost four times as many as in the previous workshop in 1986, reflecting the recent rapid development and progress of electroluminescence research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electroluminescent display for pictorially presenting aircraft flight surface and landing apparatus configuration was designed and constructed. The ability of observers to detect errors on this display was compared to similar performance with a conventional aircraft display containing the same information. By the installation of a transparent red-emitting plate to the front of the electroluminescent panel, a third display mode, that of dynamic color electroluminescence, was established. Hue changes were effected, using standard additive mixing techniques, by varying the intensity of the electroluminescent emission. The three displays were shown to six highly trained subjects in a counterbalanced order. A random number of errors appeared on each of the 60 presentations of each display. Subjects were asked to identify each error by depressing the appropriate response pushbutton as rapidly as possible. Errors were defined as flight surface and landing gear configuration conditions inappropriate to the given mode of flight. These errors were color-cued on the color electroluminescent display. The test results indicated that performance with the electroluminescent displays tended to be superior to that with the conventional display in terms of both errors and response time. Both electroluminescent displays yielded significantly lower response times when compared to the conventional display; the color electroluminescent display yielded significantly fewer errors when compared with the conventional display. Subjects' comments regarding the electroluminescent displays and their operational potential were generally favorable. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental study of the lamination of electroluminescent (EL) display control electrodes, is described. The study included selection and test of suitable voltage barrier materials, for separation of adjacent or overlapping layers of electrodes. The material finally selected, polymeric 1,4-dimethylbenzene, proved to have very high dielectric strength, coupled with continuous pin-hole free film characteristics when used in very thin film layers. Films of 2 to 2.5 microns thickness proved to be adequate for electrical isolation of adjacent or overlapping electrodes, at 250 volt 400 hertz, with a minimum of voltage drop across the insulating film. Techniques for handling this film were investigated, and gapless bargraph and numeric electroluminescent (EL) displays were fabricated to demonstrate this method's effectiveness of construction.
