Electrochemical measurements were made with these alloys in both the unstressed and stressed conditions, and then under conditions of cyclic stress. (Author).

Book excerpt: Stress corrosion cracking of titanium: 8% A1 - 1% Mo - 1% V alloy specimens was investigated in various salt solutions at controlled potentials applied by a potentiostat. Polarization curves on titanium oxide surfaces and kinetic data for oxidation of newly formed titanium alloy surface were also obtained. It was found that stress corrosion cracking of duplex annealed Ti:8-1-1 alloy occurred in chloride, bromide, and iodide solutions but did not occur in other solutions such as fluoride, hydroxide, sulfide, sulfate, nitrate or perchlorate. The ultimate strength was strongly dependent upon potential. The velocity of crack propagation and current flowing into the crack in chloride, bromide and iodide solutions were linearly related to the applied potential above a potential of -900 mv to the saturated colomel electrode. An electrochemical model was developed to interpret the data. Anodic reaction with the halides is considered to initiate at the -900 mv potential and the rate of crack propagation to be limited by the potential drop through the electrolyte in the crack. It is planned to extend the investigation to other alloys using the model as a guide for the design of experiments. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation of Ti in sulfuric acid and HC1 solns. was carried out at a.c. frequencies of 20-2000 cycles/sec. in 10N sulfuric acid and 20-1000 cycles/sec. in 10N HC1 solns. By superimposing an a.c. the anodic dissoln. of Ti is intensified, and this phenomenon is accelerated by higher frequencies. For the return of the Ti from the active to the passive condition in 10N sulfuric acid it is necessary to pass the current at the rate of 0.48 x 10 (to the minus 3rd power) coulomb/cm (to the 2nd power) of metal surface which converted into no. of 0 atoms corresponds to 1 monoat. layer. This also indicates that a corresponding quantity of 0 was present on the Ti surface. The Ti dissoln. rate in 10N HC1 under the action of a.c. of all frequencies was considerably higher than in sulfuric acid of equal concn. This indicates that C1 is the activating agent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following conclusions apply to Ti(Pt) near-surface alloys studied. (1) Open-circuit corrosion measurements show that accumulation of platinum may occur at a surface concentration of 0.32 atomic percent Pt while no accumulation occurs at 0.16 atomic percent Pt. However, these results do not allow a distinction as to cause of accumulation to be made between concentration effects and effects due to the presence of an oxide film. (2) Potentiostatic corrosion at -0.450 V (active corrosion) establish that little or no accumulation of platinum occurs at an oxide-free surface for concentrations less than 0.086 atomic percent Pt; whereas, a large amount of accumulation occurs for a distribution with a peak concentration of 0.83 atomic percent Pt. (3) An initial distribution having a peak concentration of 0.32 atomic percent platinum is sufficient to induce natural passivity in titanium and bring a freely corroding sample to a potential of 0.269 V. This is nearly the applicable reversible potential ( -0.260 V) for the hydrogen reaction in 1N H2SO4. (4) Of three samples which showed accumulation, platinum was eventually lost for two of these samples (0.32 atomic percent, open-circuit corrosion; 0.83 atomic percent, potentiostatic corrosion). The remaining sample (9.1 atomic percent, open-circuit corrosion) maintained the maximum possible potential of -0.260 V for the length of the experiment (approx. 30 days). (5) For samples which had been polarized at -0.300 to -0.340 V and which had eventually reverted to the behavior of pure Ti, post corrosion RBS measurements reveal that a substantial fraction of the Pt fluence is retained on the surface in an electrochemically inactive state.

Book excerpt: This Thesis describes investigations of the corrosion resistant behaviour of titanium and several of its dilute _-phase alloys in aqueous solutions under conditions (temperature, pH, solution composition, 'etc'.) expected to be relevant to titanium alloy containers buried in a nuclear fuel waste disposal vault. A range of electrochemical experiments (open circuit potential, polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, coupled electrode crevice corrosion and combined electrochemistry/neutron reflectometry measurements) and post-electrochemistry, 'ex situ' analyses (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, hydrogen extraction, optical microscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy) were used to study the nature and growth of the passive oxide film on titanium, its breakdown and dissolution, the absorption of hydrogen into the titanium, and the influence of ilute alloying components on some of these behaviours. The major conclusions are mentioned briefly below. The data generated in these experiments support published papers that suggest the passive film on titanium is composed of TiO2 with a rutile-like packing density; however, when grown in aqueous solution, significant amounts of hydrogen are incorporated into the oxide in the form of Ti-OH and bound water molecules. On alloy materials containing Ti-noble metal intermetallic precipitates, the passive film seems to be discontinuous, presumably because it does not form as well over exposed intermetallic particles as it does over grains of titanium. This observation helps explain the enhanced corrosion resistance of these alloys over unalloyed titanium--the exposed particles are believed to catalyze the cathodic half-reaction and reinforce passivity by anodically polarizing the alloy. The passive oxide film on titanium can be penetrated by dissolution in acidic solution. This requires a pH less than ~1 in deaerated HCl solution at room temperature. It appears that catalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction by exposed.
