Book excerpt: To address the challenges involved in reducing residential energy consumption in existing housing, the Retrofit Options Workshop was held in 1993, bringing together representatives from key groups in the Canadian energy retrofit field. This publication contains the results of the workshop deliberations and recommendations in the areas of market opportunities for energy retrofits, the current market context, retrofit programs, and implementation of retrofit options. It also appends detailed studies commissioned in preparation for the workshop. The subjects of these studies include the characteristics of existing Canadian housing, reviews of studies and assessments of energy retrofit potential, profiles of Canadian homeowners and of the renovation industry, retrofit market interventions, interviews with stakeholders in the energy retrofit field, and heating system retrofits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The struggle to save the Earth has become less environmental and more economic as globalization increases corporate power. The alternative is the growing movement for smaller, ecologically-based economies. By examining several cases in the U.S. and Canada, Acts of Balance provides evidence that future economic opportunities exist when local residents steward their resource base, not when non-locals have the power to plunder it. Citing the U.S. Northwest economy, which grew after logging was reduced to protect the spotted owl, the book demonstrates why a concerted effort by government, industry, and activists is needed to redirect development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy efficiency plays and will continue to play an important role in the world to save energy and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, little is known on how much additional capital should be invested to ensure using energy efficiently as it should be, and very little is known which sub-areas, technologies, and countries shall achieve maximum greenhouse gas emissions mitigation per dollar of investment in energy efficiency worldwide. Analyzing completed and slowly moving energy efficiency projects by the Global Environment Facility during 1991-2010, Closing the Gap: GEF Experiences in Global Energy Efficiency evaluates impacts of multi-billion-dollar investments in the world energy efficiency. It covers the following areas: 1. Reviewing the world energy efficiency investment and disclosing the global energy efficiency gap and market barriers that cause the gap; 2. Leveraging private funds with public funds and other resources in energy efficiency investments; using these funds in tangible and intangible asset investments; 3. Investment effectiveness in dollars per metric ton of CO2 emissions mitigation in 10 energy efficiency sub-areas; 4. Major barriers causing failure and abandonments in energy efficiency investments; 5. Quantification of direct and indirect CO2 emissions mitigations inside and outside a project boundary; and 6. Classification and estimation of CO2 emissions mitigations from tangible and intangible asset investments. Closing the Gap: GEF Experiences in Global Energy Efficiency can serve as a handbook for policymakers, project investors and managers, and project implementation practitioners in need of benchmarks in energy efficiency project investments for decision-making. It can also be used by students, researchers and other professionals in universities and research institutions in methodology development for evaluating energy efficiency projects and programs.

Leading experts from diverse fields examine the evolving structure of our energy system from several perspectives. They explore the changing patterns of supply and demand, offer insights into the forces that are driving the changes, and discuss energy planning strategies that take advantage of such insights. The book addresses several major issues, including the growing vulnerabilities in the U.S. energy system, the influence of technological change, and the role of electricity in meeting social objectives. The strongest of the book's themes is the growing influence of environmental concerns on the global energy system.

This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings together disparate conversations about wildlife conservation and renewable energy, suggesting ways these two critical fields can work hand in hand. Renewable energy is often termed simply "green energy," but its effects on wildlife and other forms of biodiversity can be quite complex. While capturing renewable resources like wind, solar, and energy from biomass can require more land than fossil fuel production, potentially displacing wildlife habitat, renewable energy infrastructure can also create habitat and promote species health when thoughtfully implemented. The authors of Renewable Energy and Wildlife Conservation argue that in order to achieve a balanced plan for addressing these two crucially important sustainability issues, our actions at the nexus of these fields must be directed by current scientific information related to the ecological effects of renewable energy production. Synthesizing an extensive, rapidly growing base of research and insights from practitioners into a single, comprehensive resource, contributors to this volume • describe processes to generate renewable energy, focusing on the Big Four renewables—wind, bioenergy, solar energy, and hydroelectric power • review the documented effects of renewable energy production on wildlife and wildlife habitats • consider current and future policy directives, suggesting ways industrial-scale renewables production can be developed to minimize harm to wildlife populations • explain recent advances in renewable power technologies • identify urgent research needs at the intersection of renewables and wildlife conservation Relevant to policy makers and industry professionals—many of whom believe renewables are the best path forward as the world seeks to meet its expanding energy needs—and wildlife conservationists—many of whom are alarmed at the rate of renewables-related habitat conversion—this detailed book culminates with a chapter underscoring emerging opportunities in renewable energy ecology. Book excerpt: Recovering energy from waste offers dual benefits – a) improved waste management, and b) provision of reliable energy to households, institutions and commercial entities. In this report, we present a socioeconomic assessment of three energy business models (briquette manufacturing, on-site (public toilet) energy generation, and agro-waste electricity generation) based on feasibility studies carried out in the city of Kampala, Uganda. We assess the potential economic, environmental and social impacts of waste-to-energy business models taking into consideration a life cycle of emissions to provide decision makers with the overall costs and benefits of the models to society versus a business-as-usual scenario.
