Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a premixed electrically conductive polymer concrete overlay for use on bridge decks and other concrete members, in conjunction with cathodic protection systems. A field demonstration was performed on a bridge deck (with corroding reinforcing steel) in Pulaski, Virginia, where an active cathodic protection system uses the electrically conductive overlay as the secondary anode to uniformly distribute the current across the bridge deck surface. The performance of the overlay cathodic protection system was monitored for 18 months. The data show that corrosion of the reinforcing steel embedded in the bridge deck was arrested. The overlay is soundly bonded, and there are no indications that the overlay is wearing due to traffic. This report is the conclusion of the research study. Details of the mix design and the installation of the conductive polymer concrete overlay are described in the Interim Report, FHWA-RD-88-145, dated January 1989.

Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 423: Long-Term Performance of Polymer Concrete for Bridge Decks addresses a number of topics related to thin polymer overlays (TPOs). Those topics include previous research, specifications, and procedures on TPOs; performance of TPOs based on field applications; the primary factors that influence TPO performance; current construction guidelines for TPOs related to surface preparation, mixing and placement, consolidation, finishing, and curing; repair procedures; factors that influence the performance of overlays, including life-cycle cost, benefits and costs, bridge deck condition, service life extension, and performance; and successes and failures of TPOs, including reasons for both.
Book Synopsis Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection by :
Download or read book Field Inspection Guide for Bridge Deck Cathodic Protection written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report is intended as a guide for inspectors who are unfamiliar with the construction procedures used when installing cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete bridge decks. The text has been divided into sections in an effort to simplify the report and make it easier to locate desired information. The first four sections provide some basic background information about cathodic protection. Section V discusses a general system installation; each of the major components are discussed to provide a basic understanding and act as a checklist during the installation process. Section VI discusses the various types of systems that have been installed, to date. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual. Rather, it is to be used as a guide to help overcome some of the most common problems associated with the installation of cathodic protection systems. It is meant to support and supplement good specifications, not replace them"--Page 1
Book Synopsis Premixed Polymer Concrete Overlays by : Michael M. Sprinkel
Download or read book Premixed Polymer Concrete Overlays written by Michael M. Sprinkel and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a study undertaken to evaluate premixed polymer concrete overlays (PMPCO) over a 3-year period are presented. The PMPCO evaluated were constructed with polyester amide para resin and silica sand 1;. polyester styrene resin 1 and silica sand 2; polyester styrene resin 2, basalt aggregate and coke breeze (for conductivity); polyester styrene resin 2, silica sand 3 and coke breeze; and vinyl ester styrene resin, silica sand 2, and coke breeze. The mixing of the ingredients was done with either portable concrete mixers, mortar mixers, or a continuous batching mobile concrete mixer. The overlays were struck off and consolidated with a vibrating screed or a slip form paver. The report indicates that a nonconductive PMPCO with high bond strength, low permeability, and high skid resistance can be successfully installed by a contractor and opened to traffic after only three hours of curing. The report indicates that a conductive PMPCO with high bond strength and skid resistance can be successfully installed as a secondary anode for a cathodic protection system. Also, it is shown that the special provision for a PMPCO should require the installation of test patches or test sections of overlay prior to placing the final overlay to assure that the surface preparation is adequate and the mixing, installation equipment, procedures, and materials will provide a satisfactory overlay.

Download or read book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete written by John P. Broomfield and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of Steel in Concrete: Understanding, Investigation and Repair is a guide for designing, constructing and maintaining reinforced concrete structures, such as buildings and bridges which are subject to reinforcement corrosion. It presents the basics of theory and practice in steel corrosion in concrete and reviews the latest research and developments, such as progress on measuring the corrosion threshold for chloride-induced corrosion. This third edition compares the currently proliferating major national and international standards and guidance documents. New developments are considered, such as hybrid anodes for electrochemical treatment and the latest research and developments in assessment, such as the use of ground penetrating radar to measure the chloride content of the concrete cover. It overhauls coverage of electrochemical repair and rehabilitation techniques and outlines recent innovations in structural repair and construction and investigates their implications for durability. The book is ideal for practitioners and graduate students in structural engineering and concrete technology.

Book excerpt: Recognizing the burden that reinforcing steel corrosion imposes on natural resources, the Federal Highway Administration established Corrosion Protection for Concrete Bridges as one of the high-priority areas (HPAs) in its Structures Research Program. This report summarizes the progress made through research efforts conducted under these programs. The results presented cover (A) corrosion control in new concrete constructions (adequate concrete cover, quality concrete, rebar coatings, corrosion inhibiting admixtures, and corrosion protection of prestressed concrete bridge members) and (B) corrosion control for rehabilitation of existing concrete structures (conventional rehabilitation methods, cathodic protection, and electrochemical removal of chloride).
