Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates how Indonesia as the largest and most populous country in Southeast Asia can become independent of fossil fuels by both reducing its energy needs and using renewable resources. A study presented in this work focuses on the Maluku Archipelago in eastern Indonesia with Ambon as its capital. Conventional energy is brought to the islands over long distances by partly simple means as boats, ships and aircrafts. This unsustainable situation calls for a decentralized renewable energy supply strategy. Based on the research presented in this book, it is clear that the archipelago has the potential to become a so-called plus-minus region. Plus-minus regions are regions that produce more renewable energy than they need and capture more CO2 than they emit. The authors are convinced that the presented strategy illustrated on the Maluku Archipelago can be transferred to other regions of the world and that only by developing plus-minus regions the international 2°C climate goal can be achieved. The model region thus serves as proof that the plus-minus target can also be achieved in emerging countries with limited financial resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Ukraine, with the exposure of nuclear power stations and the danger of atomic warfare, has made the legacy of the Soviet nuclear sector of critical importance. The two authors map the Soviet nuclear industry in a shifting historical context, making sense of a complex socio-technical and environmental history. Taking an innovative approach, this book explores the history of atomic power in the former Soviet Union using the spatial dimensions of the nuclear industry as a point of departure. The key concept is that of the archipelago – a network of nuclear facilities spread throughout the Soviet territory, but mutually reliant on each other and densely connected. The story traces the emergence of nuclear science and technology for military and civilian purposes through to the post-Soviet Russian nuclear corporations as providers of resources and technology. The book explains how nuclear developments in the Soviet Union interacted with processes of environmental and landscape change. The spatial lens offers an analytically fruitful and pedagogically stimulating way to comprehend the nuclear histories of the Soviet Union and its successor states.

Book excerpt: Optimal Coordination of Power Protective Devices with Illustrative Examples Provides practical guidance on the coordination issue of power protective relays and fuses Protecting electrical power systems requires devices that isolate the components that are under fault while keeping the rest of the system stable. Optimal Coordination of Power Protective Devices with Illustrative Examples provides a thorough introduction to the optimal coordination of power systems protection using fuses and protective relays. Integrating fundamental theory and real-world practice, the text begins with an overview of power system protection and optimization, followed by a systematic description of the essential steps in designing optimal coordinators using only directional overcurrent relays. Subsequent chapters present mathematical formulations for solving many standard test systems, and cover a variety of popular hybrid optimization schemes and their mechanisms. The author also discusses a selection of advanced topics and extended applications including adaptive optimal coordination, optimal coordination with multiple time-current curves, and optimally coordinating multiple types of protective devices. Optimal Coordination of Power Protective Devices: Covers fuses and overcurrent, directional overcurrent, and distance relays Explains the relation between fault current and operating time of protective relays Discusses performance and design criteria such as sensitivity, speed, and simplicity Includes an up-to-date literature review and a detailed overview of the fundamentals of power system protection Features numerous illustrative examples, practical case studies, and programs coded in MATLAB® programming language Optimal Coordination of Power Protective Devices with Illustrative Examples is the perfect textbook for instructors in electric power system protection courses, and a must-have reference for protection engineers in power electric companies, and for researchers and industry professionals specializing in power system protection.

The country is comprised of two main islands, São Tomé and Principe, along with several smaller islets. The nation has a population of approximately 200,000 people and the official language is Portuguese. São Tomé and Principe was colonized by the Portuguese in the late 15th century and gained independence in 1975. The country’s economy is predominantly based on agriculture, with cocoa being the primary export. São Tomé and Principe is known for its biodiversity and ecotourism, with about 30% of the total land area being designated as protected areas. The nation is also rich in cultural and historical landmarks, such as the historic city of São Tomé, which is home to many colonial-era buildings and sites. Despite being considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world, São Tomé and Principe is actively working towards economic development and has attracted significant foreign investment in recent years.

Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Prosperity provides a much needed exploration of the evolution of environmental sustainability in U.S. foreign policy. Through expert analysis of nine countries and regions of strategic importance, David Reed and his stellar team of experts in foreign policy and environmental affairs identify emerging threats to the prosperity and national security of the United States. They assert that U.S. foreign policy must shift away from its 100-year-old focus on obtaining energy and mineral inputs for the industrial economy. In the new millennium, U.S. foreign policy must be geared toward ensuring the prosperity of the country’s trading and political partners around the globe. To the degree that our partners’ economies and social stability are threatened by the natural resource scarcities and environmental change unfolding within their borders and in neighboring countries, threats to U.S. prosperity and national security increase proportionately. Directed to U.S. foreign policy makers, the intelligence and security communities, and influential think tanks and research organizations, the book proposes specific recommendations the U.S. government should embrace to respond to the disruption of global supply chains, social instability in partner countries, disruptive impacts on regional relations, and expansion of illegal trade and criminal networks. This unique focus establishes In Pursuit of Prosperity as a seminal work in understanding the challenges facing the United States in this period of global environmental change.

Book excerpt: A major concern of island power systems is frequency stability. A power system is said to be frequency stable if its generators are able to supply their loads at a frequency within acceptable limits after a disturbance. Frequency instability occurs if load-generation imbalances are not corrected in appropriate manner and time. Since island power systems are more sensitive to frequency instability than large ones due to the smaller number of generators online and the lower inertia, they require a larger amount of primary reserve per generator. This book provides a worldwide overview of island power systems, describing their main features and issues. Split into two parts, the first part examines the technical operation, and in particular, frequency stability of island power systems and its technical solutions, including more efficient underfrequency load-shedding schemes. The chapters explore both conventional and advanced load-shedding schemes and consider the improvement of these schemes by making them more robust and efficient. Advanced devices are modelled and analyzed to enhance frequency stability and reduce the need for load shedding. In the second part, the economic operation of island power systems is explored in detail. For that purpose, regulations and economic operations (centralized vs. market scheme) are reviewed by the authors. The authors discuss models for renewable energy sources and for advanced devices and systems such as demand-side management, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles. This book will be critical reading to all researchers and professionals in power system planning and engineering, electrical/power delivery, RES and control engineering. It will also be of interest to researchers in signal processing and telecommunications and renewable energy, as well as power system utility providers.
