Book excerpt: A discrete-element matrix-displacement method is developed for the elastic-plastic small-deflection analysis of meridionally-curved shells of revolution subjected to asymmetric loading. Fourier series is used to describe the circumferential variations of loads, pressures, displacements, stresses, etc. The 'initial strain' approach in conjunction with the Mises-Hencky yield criterion and the plastic flow rule in accordance with the theory of plastic potential is used to determine the effects of plasticity. This method has been implemented as a digital computer program, and the computer solutions are compared to experimental results for two example shells. (Author).

Results were obtained for a torisphere under internal pressure and also for centrally loaded spheres. A study was made of the effect of elastic-plastic behavior on the buckling of spheres with axisymmetric imperfections subjected to external pressure. It was found that plastic yielding played a significant role in reducing the buckling pressure of these shells. The influence of plastic yielding increased with increase of the thickness to radius ratio. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report involves the development of a curved finite element for the analysis of symmetrically loaded shells of revolution with transverse shear effects. The shell displacements are written in local rectilinear coordinates. They are represented by four-degrees of freedom at a node, two translations and two rotations. The geometric approximation of the curved shell element is similar to that given by Khojasteh-Bakht in 'Analysis of Elastic-Plastic Shells of Revolution Under Axisymmetric Loading by the Finite Element Method.' The equilibrium equations governing the shell behavior were derived by the principle of minimum total potential energy. Several selected numerical examples were solved and the solutions are in excellent agreement with known results. (Author).
