Book excerpt: The finite element method coupled with a stable step-by-step integration procedure was used for the elastic dynamic analysis of two-dimensional plane strain solids. The computer program developed was machine independent and was designed to be used in the dynamic analysis of day-to-day engineering problems. The purpose of this investigation is to extend the step-by-step approach to the analysis of axisymmetric structures. In addition, new coding techniques have been introduced in order to increase the capacity of the program. Also, a higher order axisymmetric finite element has been developed which has significantly increased the accuracy of the procedure for the same numerical effort. Since the axisymmetric formulation reduces the plane strain case for a large radius, the present axisymmetric computer program replaces the original program. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most finite element books that cover time dependent processes (IVPs) in a cursory manner, The Finite Element Method for Initial Value Problems: Mathematics and Computations focuses on the mathematical details as well as applications of space-time coupled and space-time decoupled finite element methods for IVPs. Space-time operator classification, space-time methods of approximation, and space-time calculus of variations are used to establish unconditional stability of space-time methods during the evolution. Space-time decoupled methods are also presented with the same rigor. Stability of space-time decoupled methods, time integration of ODEs including the finite element method in time are presented in detail with applications. Modal basis, normal mode synthesis techniques, error estimation, and a posteriori error computations for space-time coupled as well as space-time decoupled methods are presented. This book is aimed at a second-semester graduate level course in FEM.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a computer program for the elastic-plastic dynamic analysis of shells of revolution. General isoparametric elements with curved sides are used in the finite element discretization. These are capable of representing solids of revolution in the form of a layered system. Structures with complex geometries and sharp discontinuities may be studied. Solutions can be obtained for both thin and thick shells because the customary Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis is not invoked. Dynamic analysis is carried out by means of step-by-step integration, the program allowing for the use of any of the schemes belonging to the Newmark family of methods (with free parameters gamma and beta) and the Wilson and Farhoomand theta method. Flow theory of plasticity is used in the inelastic range, and either isotropic hardening or kinematic linear hardening may be adopted. The program can analyze axisymmetric structures subjected to axially symmetric loading as well as plane stress problems. Numerical examples presented include the static analysis of a fixed end beam and the dynamic analyses of a cantilever, a simply supported beam, and two spherical caps. (Author).

The assessment is based on work conducted at the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory under contract to the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory. In addition to surveying the open literature, information for the study was gathered during a series of visits made to organizations throughout the United States at which there is an active shell analysis research effort. More than 40 industrial concerns, government agencies and universities have been visited to date. During each visit, technical personnel working in the area of shell analysis were interviewed to determine the scope of their present analysis capability, to learn of current research activities and to discuss computer methods of shell analysis in general. Information so obtained is summarized in a series of briefs which appear in the Appendix of this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text considers the problem of the dynamic fluid-structure interaction between a finite elastic structure and the acoustic field in an unbounded fluid-filled exterior domain. The exterior acoustic field is modelled through a boundary integral equation over the structure surface. However, the classical boundary integral equation formulations of this problem either have no solutions or do not have unique solutions at certain characteristic frequencies (which depend on the surface geometry) and it is necessary to employ modified boundary integral equation formulations which are valid for all frequencies. The particular approach adopted here involves an arbitrary coupling parameter and the effect that this parameter has on the stability and accuracy of the numerical method used to solve the integral equation is examined. The boundary integral analysis of the exterior acoustic problem is coupled with a finite element analysis of the elastic structure in order to investigate the interaction between the dynamic behaviour of the structure and the associated acoustic field. Recently there has been some controversy over whether or not the coupled problem also suffers from the non-uniqueness problems associated with the classical integral equation formulations of the exterior acoustic problem. This question is resolved by demonstrating that .the solution to the coupled problem is not unique at the characteristic frequencies and that it is necessary to employ an integral equation formulation valid for all frequencies.
