Book excerpt: First published in 1989. The ballad or romance, as it is commonly called, has played a vital role over the centuries in Hispanic culture as an orally transmitted narrative song. It is characteristically the product of people who have had to look to themselves for entertainment. From the end of the fifteenth to the early seventeenth century, the romancero (balladry) enjoyed a great vogue among learned poets and their audiences, especially in the Spanish and Portuguese courts. The authors’ intent in this book is to survey and to assess the state of the romancero, not only in Spain and Portugal, but also in peripheral areas whereit has migrated and taken root.

Book Synopsis Folklore and Literature by : Manuel da Costa Fontes
Download or read book Folklore and Literature written by Manuel da Costa Fontes and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2000-03-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folklore and Literature shows how modern folklore supplements an understanding of the early oral tradition and enhances the knowledge of the early literature. Besides documenting how writers incorporated folklore into their works, this book allows us to understand crucial passages whose learned authors took for granted a familiarity with the oral tradition, thus enabling us to restore those passages to their intended meaning. Studying the vicissitudes of oral transmission in great detail, this is the first book exclusively dedicated to the relationship between folklore and literature in a Luso-Brazilian context, taking into account the pan-Hispanic and other traditions as well. Some of the folkloric passages included are: Puputiriru; Celestina; El idolatra de Maria; Remando Vao Remadores; Barca Bela; Flerida; and Don Duarodos.

Book Synopsis A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula by : Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
Download or read book A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula written by Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula" is the second comparative history of a new subseries with a regional focus, published by the Coordinating Committee of the International Comparative Literature Association. As its predecessor for East-Central Europe, this two-volume history distances itself from traditional histories built around periods and movements, and explores, from a comparative viewpoint, a space considered to be a powerful symbol of inter-literary relations. Both the geographical pertinence and its symbolic condition are obviously discussed, when not even contested.Written by an international team of researchers who are specialists in the field, this history is the first attempt at applying a comparative approach to the plurilingual and multicultural literatures in the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of comprehensiveness is abandoned in favor of a diverse and extensive array of key issues for a comparative agenda."A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula" undermines the primacy claimed for national and linguistic boundaries, and provides a geo-cultural account of literary inter-systems which cannot otherwise be explained.
Book Synopsis Criticising the Ruler in Pre-Modern Societies – Possibilities, Chances, and Methods by : Karina Kellermann

This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.
Book Synopsis Spanish traditional ballads from Aragon by : Teresa Catarella
Download or read book Spanish traditional ballads from Aragon written by Teresa Catarella and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Spanish Traditional Ballads from Aragon is a collection of 308 oral traditional ballads representing fifty-nine different text-types that author Michele S. de Cruz-Saenz collected on trips to 280 Aragonese towns and villages. In the course of her study, she interviewed 143 informants from seventy-five towns. They were men and women, ranging from illiterate to professional, whose ages were from ten to more than one hundred years. It was her intention to rescue this aspect of Spanish folklore, which is quickly disappearing in the wake of agricultural mechanization and modern technology. All of the informants shared her desire, and lent their enthusiastic collaboration in the preservation of Aragonese cultural identity."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Sonic Ruins of Modernity by : Edwin Seroussi
Download or read book Sonic Ruins of Modernity written by Edwin Seroussi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonic Ruins of Modernity shows how social, cultural and cognitive phenomena interact in the making and distribution of folksongs beyond their time. Through Judeo-Spanish (or Ladino) folksongs, the author illustrates a methodology for the interplay of individual memories, artistic initiatives, political and media policies, which ultimately shape “tradition” for the past century. He fleshes out in a series of case studies how folksongs can be conceived, performed and circulated in the post-tradition era – constituting each song as a “sonic ruin,” as an imagined place. At the same time, the book overall provides a unique perspective on the history of the Judeo-Spanish folksong.
