Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: «He tenido cinco perros. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "I have had five dogs. There is no company more silent and pleasing. There is no loyalty as moving as that of their attentive eyes, their licks, and their close wet noses. Nothing as amazing as the extreme wisdom of an intelligent dog. There is no greater remedy for melancholy and loneliness than their faithful company, the certainty that they would die for you, sacrificing themselves for a caress or a kind word." Perros de Presa trained by unscrupulous people; a one-eyed yet dignified mutt; the Brazilian mastiff that wasn't a killer; Jemmy and Boxer, who crossed Death Valley with the Light Brigade; the skinny bastard dog of the Battle of Rocroi; or Sherlock, the quiet wire-haired dachshund: these are some of the protagonists in the articles written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte between 1993 and 2014 that are compiled in this anthology, illustrated by the painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau.

He opens the door to his bedroom, and sees what he expected—his wife in bed with another cop. Two pumps of the shotgun take care of them, and Shepard carries out the rest of his plan. Accompanied by his nameless dog, this half-mad young detective goes to the roof of his apartment building, where he has built a small fortress stocked with food, water, and weapons. He loads his guns and awaits the police. Talking Shepard down falls to Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan, the odd-couple partners in Chicago homicide. As soon as they make contact, Shepard names his demands: He wants to talk to a TV crew and to the new police captain. The building is rigged with explosives, he says, and he is ready to pull the trigger. To stop this renegade cop, Lieberman and Hanrahan will have to kill him—or try to understand what made him snap.

Download or read book Kuxlejal Politics written by Mariana Mora and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, Zapatista indigenous community members have asserted their autonomy and self-determination by using everyday practices as part of their struggle for lekil kuxlejal, a dignified collective life connected to a specific territory. This in-depth ethnography summarizes Mariana Mora’s more than ten years of extended research and solidarity work in Chiapas, with Tseltal and Tojolabal community members helping to design and evaluate her fieldwork. The result of that collaboration—a work of activist anthropology—reveals how Zapatista kuxlejal (or life) politics unsettle key racialized effects of the Mexican neoliberal state. Through detailed narratives, thick descriptions, and testimonies, Kuxlejal Politics focuses on central spheres of Zapatista indigenous autonomy, particularly governing practices, agrarian reform, women’s collective work, and the implementation of justice, as well as health and education projects. Mora situates the proposals, possibilities, and challenges associated with these decolonializing cultural politics in relation to the racialized restructuring that has characterized the Mexican state over the past twenty years. She demonstrates how, despite official multicultural policies designed to offset the historical exclusion of indigenous people, the Mexican state actually refueled racialized subordination through ostensibly color-blind policies, including neoliberal land reform and poverty alleviation programs. Mora’s findings allow her to critically analyze the deeply complex and often contradictory ways in which the Zapatistas have reconceptualized the political and contested the ordering of Mexican society along lines of gender, race, ethnicity, and class.

Book Synopsis El Puerto del Silencio by : Valentin Mendoza
Download or read book El Puerto del Silencio written by Valentin Mendoza and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Under the Bridge: Stories from the Border / Bajo el puente: Relatos desde la frontera by : Rosario Sanmiguel
Download or read book Under the Bridge: Stories from the Border / Bajo el puente: Relatos desde la frontera written by Rosario Sanmiguel and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ñSuddenly I saw him appear in the train yard on the other side of the river, between the boxcars, Martin and a Migra, it looked like they were arguing, they lifted up their arms like they were gonna start wailing on each other, the Migra guy grabbed Martin by his shoulder and shook him, me and all the people on this side were watching close to see what was gonna happenî In the title story of this short story collection set along the Texas-Mexico border, young Monica waits for her boyfriend Martin under the bridge next to the Rio Grande running between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Martin is a pasamojados, someone who smuggles people across the river. When he asks her if she wants to leave with him, sheÍs afraid. Afraid to suffer the way her parents did when they went north, suffocating in heat and fear, unable to find a job. But in spite of her fears, she finds herself at the river bank, being pushed into the tire tube that serves as a raft, under the bridge. Mexican writer Rosario Sanmiguel crafts intriguing narratives about solitary women in search of their place, caught between the past and the present. Set in the border region, this collection follows these women?some from privileged backgrounds and others from more desperate circumstances?through seedy bars, hotel rooms, and city streets. A woman who has escaped the night life, dancing on platforms in front of thousands of eyes; Francis, who finally finds the strength to leave her married lover; young Fatima, whose mother abandons her, leaving her to take her place as a maid in a wealthy El Paso familyÍs mansion; Nicole, who has risen from dismal poverty to become an accomplished immigration attorney. Originally published in Mexico as Callejon Sucre y otros relatos (Ediciones del Azar, 1994), this edition contains a profound English translation by John Pluecker. The seven stories included in this collection interweave the opposing themes of solitude and connectedness, longing and privilege, fear and audacity, all of which are juxtaposed on the boundary of self-awareness.
