Download or read book God Desired and Desiring written by Juan Ramón Jiménez and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of my poetry has been and is the development of an encounter with an idea about God, the great Spanish poet and Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez wrote several years before his death. An early twentieth-century pioneer in the use of free verse, Jiménez has always expressed himself through mystery and profundity. The author presents a fervent landscape of primordial imagery in an attempt to restore mystical poetry to its rightful place in literature and art. For anyone not familiar with the writings of this modern master, these austere and radiant poems, translated by the poet and scholar Antonio de Nicolás and presented alongside the original Spanish, will demonstrate why Jiménez is considered one of the masters of twentieth-century poetry. To what may this writing be compared? Whitman's 'Song of Myself' comes to mind, but it is not with any intention of taking away from Whitman's achievement that I declare a preference for the poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez ... Book Synopsis The Poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez. by : Julio Hans C. Jensen
Download or read book The Poetry of Juan Ramón Jiménez. written by Julio Hans C. Jensen and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881–1958; Nobel laureate 1956) wrote at a key moment in literary history. Since Jiménez’s lyrical output covers the poetic tradition from Romanticism through Symbolism to the Avant-Gardes, his work can be regarded as a condensation of the modern paradigm. Julio Jensen investigates the lyrical subject appearing in Jiménez’s poetry as exemplary of the notion of modern subjectivity. He does so by assuming a historical correlation between literature and philosophy in the sense that if philosophical discourse conceptualizes the prevailing understanding of the human being at a given moment, literary discourse represents it. Modern thought does not accept any other foundation than subjectivity. At the same time, the awareness of the subject’s finitude engenders pessimism with respect to its status as world-generating principle. One of the primary aims of this study, then, is to show how Jiménez poignantly enacts this vacillation between self-enthronement and self-eradication. With insightful readings of Jiménez’s poetry, the author opens a rich vein in the work of a writer who would serve as a central reference for later Spanish-language poets such as Federico Garcá Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz.

It is equally innovative in its cultivation of free verse, and historically important for introducing, for the first time in Spanish literature, a new mode of poetic composition."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis The Intellectual and Cultural Worlds of Rubén Darío by : Kathleen T. O’Connor-Bater
Download or read book The Intellectual and Cultural Worlds of Rubén Darío written by Kathleen T. O’Connor-Bater and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío (1867-1916) has had a foundational influence on virtually all Spanish language writers and poets of the twentieth century and beyond. Yet, while he is a household name among Hispano-phone readers, the seminal modernista remains virtually unknown to an English readership. This book examines the writings of Ruben Dario as both poet and chronicler, as he renovates language drawing lessons from ancient mythologies to embrace the ideal of "art for art’s sake"; all the while opposing United States aggression in the hemisphere along with the pseudo-Bohemian European bourgeoisie in poetry and prose at the cusp of the Great War.
